Got shot down away from the field.. Ended up in the tower I was surprised to see the system say that I'd landed my kills safely.

There is a bug whereby if you are attempting to bail as you hit the ground it will sometimes give you a successful landing and credit for your kills.  I've had it happen to me twice but it's very rare.
