Title: Aces High for Kids
Post by: Agent360 on January 09, 2009, 11:48:47 PM
My two sons are facinated with Aces High. It's the game "Dad" plays. They are 7 and 10.

Both can play the game in offline. But they are more interested in quick action..."Dad how can I shoot rockets...drop bombs...how can I shoot something with that tank"...etc

I recently went to the local game store. We looked for PS2 airplane games. I found a couple jet games. But they didnt really hold any interest to the boys...i gues too complicated.

I asked about "prop plane" games. I dont rem the name but there was one they didnt have..sold out.

I was looking for a more simplified airplane game. One where they can choose planes and fly around shooting stuff for points and shoot AI drones...etc.... but it doesnt exist.

I started thinking...what a great kid game...a flight sim that is easy to fly and has cools stuff...like flying through obstacles....shooting targets...etc...earn points and so on....to get better planes. Just like the car racing games out.

If HiTech is listening...this might be something to think about....

I can relate in that I have a 7 year-old son very interested in playing. He has the basic flight dynamics down pretty well. For now, he plays strictly offline. I cannot let him fly online simply because he has a tendency to carry fowl-mouthiness from the game to the school bus.

Maybe have someone make an offline mission for the kids? Keep it kind of simple, all you have to do is fly through an X amount of rings, then shoot down 1 plane. (remember to turn on the stall limiter for the kids!)

If you are looking for older style prop driven fun on the PS2 there are several options. Its actually been a while since i had a ps2 but did a search on gamespot.com and IGN.com and came up with the following games.

Heroes of the Pacific (http://ps2.ign.com/objects/677/677740.html)
WWII: Battle Over the Pacific (http://ps2.ign.com/objects/142/14248404.html)
Secret Weapons Over Normandy (http://ps2.ign.com/objects/551/551942.html)
Pacific Warriors II: Dogfight (http://ps2.ign.com/objects/681/681532.html)
Victory Wings: Zero Pilot Series
Zero Pilot: Kosora no Kiseki

The last two I couldn't find a good description on just that they existed. As 1pLUs44 mentioned Offline Missions are also a good option many of them will move you closer to the action after takeoff. I know there is a scoring system in the Offline Missions but i do not know if any of the current missions out there use this or not.

might be tough to find this 1 though

Playstation 2: Ace Combat series. My FAVORITE PS2 series EVER.

Edit: Look it up. If you're interested, my PS2 is broken, and I cannot afford to have it fixed or replaced. If the Ace Combat series looks like something they may be interested, I can send you my copies.

"Battle stations: Midway" would be a good one. It has other aspects besides aircraft as well, pt boats, gunners, ect...you can probably find that used at Gamestop for under $20 I'd imagine.

I know this is a way diffrent thing and you may not even liked it. If they want to fly somthing with a prop, and its WW2, try R/C. R/C is a lot of father/son type of thing, and its a lot of fun. The 10 year is at perfect age because thats when I started. It does cost some money and a lot of time, but if you have it, like in the situation that I'm in, you can have a lot of fun with it. I still never regret the decision to start flying R/C, it's somthing that almost anyone can learn.

I'll find the website were you can get a P-51 trainer that Horizon Hobby has to offer. If I'm not mistaken, the range is from 150-200$ tops ready to fly.
If you have the time and money, do it, you can even learn if you wanted to.

Straying from topic a bit, but I just recently dug out the ol' Tiger Trainer (beater) from my shop after many years of it gathering dust. Stuck a basic Futaba radio in it and a Thundertiger .40. I'll be teaching my 7 and 9yr. old sons soon. I'm definitely not ready for scale WW2 aircraft yet. :)

If you have a spare PC set him up on a trial, take up a b17 at 5 k over an enemy field and let him gun, my 12 year old used to love the quick action aspect.

Agent I would encourage them to play AH with you if at all possible. Forget those other games.

Sondog started off in my lap at the age of 3. By the time he was 8 or so he was shooting up drones. When he was 10 he said he asked what it would take to get an account and fly online with big boys. I told him and within a short period of time he satisfied my requirements. Sooner than I expected from the bugger. ;) He does not fly so much any more (he is into the first person shooters), but when he was I had some great times flying with my son. Lots of wonderful memories. No doubt you would too. :)

Also try out some of the missions that players have made. That is a great way for your boys to pick up some practice. :)

Heroes of the Pacific is a fun game, and the mechanics of it feel a little nicer than Secret Weapons over Normandy, as well as it isn't as frustratingly difficult as SWOL.

All of my boys play offline with one another (which they love) and online using my account from time to time. They're 10, 12, 15.  At one time, the teen had his own account, which was removed as a punishment for something or other.

At any rate ~ they love AH very much. The little one is more interested in his personal performance (does yo-yo's through hangars until he crashes, always trying to one-up his personal best; etc).  An offline mission or series of 'complete these tasks' types of things that 1plus talks about would be something they'd all be interested in completing.  :aok

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I will be checking out all the game titles.

I have been playing with the boys in AH2 for a while but they just can't get enough "seat time" ... one computer/work etc. So a PS2 game will fill that gap.

I would definitly like to play some custom missions with them. Where can I find those? Hell I want to fly an obstacle course myself....are there any missions like that around?

An offline mission pack "for kids" would be just awsome...flying the RV8 with rockets-guns....auto reload when you fly over the re arm pad...would be wayyyy cool....hint hint.  LOL

Thanks again guys. Keep the suggestions coming if you have more.

He flew in his first mission a couple of days ago..A hUgE 60+ b24's Alka mission. He worked the guns & external veiws for Alka's bomber..He scared off several fighters as they leveled 3 bases and landed.Certainly the greatest video game experience he's had...And put a lasting smile on my mug. :aok

I agree.

Aero Elite: Combat Academy. It's like a simulatior but has everything you're talking about, including a Prop trainer, Twin Seaplane with cargo drops, and a Helicopter... I loved it! A must buy.

I was talking about this same thing last night in the TOC, I have a seven yr old ( just turned 7 ), who has been playing AH in offline mode, and has easily concquered the basic offline 4 drones that fly around..can not get a handle on landing yet though.online he has 4 or 5 kills to close to 108/109 deaths......( he flys on my account )

the offline training missions simply made him estatic.  Ryan has already figured out that they will appear nearly in the same location everytime now.and that they do simple basic maneuvering

He is efficiently figuring out how to blow thru the onslaught and win the offline training mission....

I 2nd the post that wishes for someway to disable all vox/or country/local channel...a lot of stuff being said /sqeeked.that doesnt belong..

I hope by the time he is 12 or 13 ( I reall do not need to hope, it will be so )  that he is just as good as TonyJoey, who is 13 , and has the Correct mindset when approaching this AH online flight sim, he is in it for "The Fight" / " The Thrill"  regardless if he wins or loses.....

my 2 cents!

I started on Microsoft Flight Simulator at age 9 (monochrome, black and white screen). :lol  Then moved on to color...  Red Baron in 6th grade, Falcon 2... F-18 hornet on the Macintosh, Falcon 3.  I never got into the WW2 sims until I found Warbirds 1.x.

Your kids can handle something with a little complexity and flight model.  Good luck. :salute

The kiddos could always get into IL2. There is plenty for them to do in quick mission builder and there are great user made campeighns for download.  not to mention online play Via hyper lobby.  My kids have a blast flying the Bf.109 on my knee in the quick mission builer.  Of course my 4yo has been flying on my knee when I used to fly AHII.

Great post Agent!   :aok

I have soon-to-be 7 year old.  I take him up offline to shoot down drones once in a while and he is actually starting to get the whole flying thing down.

By far, though, his favorite part of the game is chatting on vox.  So, maybe 3 or 4 times, I've taken him up in the DA with a squaddie and let him say 'kid stuff' on  vox to "Batlfrog" or "Stoney" like it was Star Wars the Clone Wars or something.

Perhaps the best night was when Trotter was on, and he let my son shoot him down...I have to tell you, Evan was totally beaming  ear to ear after Trotter was chatting him up and then my son shot him down! It was so cool...

Anyway, great idea for a topic.   :salute

My cousin plays Ace Combat 6 or something on XBox 360,kind of like Aces High, but with jets.

P.S. I maybe 12,but I'm in Middle School,so I'm used to profanity on games.But I seriously think your sons shouldn't play,til the game has a "Safe Chat" option,allows the person to........not hear/see others typing.Or have pre-assigned messages.(Don't really like it,but can't hurt to put it out :D)

I came home from work and found my son on AH actually in a town in a Wirble. 8 kills defending. I didn't know he even knew how to get a gv started much less drive one to a town and defend. My squaddies actually know to look for little T now. He loves it but doesn't get a lot of seat time unless I'm flying (it's my real job). He spends a lot of time in the TA and the only time now he's allowed into the MA is if I'm around. Same day I saw him on the wirble, I came back into the room and he'd upped a 262 LMAO. No SA at all. The base had a CV just offshore, it was almost capped and it was all I could do to run like a little girl and save 270 perkies LOL.

In any event, his birthday present in April when he turns 12 will be a subscription, so look for lilT24 running around somewhere and remember, this game is for all ages, please be aware of what you type or say. Thanks guys <S>
