Found this unusual VVS Spitfire Mk IX scheme in a book. Most Soviet Spits were left in their RAF colours, just with stars and unit markings painted over the top. This one though has been completely repainted in VVS dark green and light blue.

Nice find Russian spit pictures are hard to come across especially one that is of such clarity.

It would probably stop sinking into the mud if they all got off it... ;)
Nice work, I'm thinking of doing one like this using the Mk XVI model (E wing, clipped tips, broad chord rudder) if nobody else has claimed it:

what about this mk5b?

Hi TwinBoom,
I think it's a late Mk IXc, the one I'm planning is very similar.
-
Just realised that my VVS Spitfire scheme is a post war aircraft circa 1948. That is no good for AH so I think I will modify the skin into the aircraft shown on the profile Twinboom posted. That one is captioned as being from spring 1945 and is a more interesting scheme anyway. I only went for the first one as I had a good photo of it.
-
Greebo, please go ahead and do TwinBoom's Spit, I'm already planning to do this one (using the XVI model) which is slightly different:

I am guessing this is the guy who flew this plane or was part of this squadron. http://airaces.narod.ru/all10/matsiev.htm

Interesting that the arrow in the photograph goes all the way to the front of the ac. It is also clearly a two colored arrow. Different squadron within the group?

If we had a VVS Mk.IX/XVI... wow. That would make my day.
Then someone *cough USRANGER cough* can revive a certain old Winter War map (or an evolution thereof) and have an all-out Luftwaffe vs VVS war!
I just noticed something. That Spitfire in the back of the Osprey book is a Mk.VIII. The Soviet Union took no deliveries of Mk.VIII Spitfires the last I checked.

Huh? Thats a mk IX...

A Spit XVI is only a Spit IX with a Packard built Merlin. The AH Spit IX is a 1942 aircraft with C type wing and standard wingtips. The AH Spit XVI is a late 44 version with the E wing, clipped wingtips and extended fin and rudder. The convention in skinning terms is to skin any Spit IX that has an E wing (cannons outboard of the 0.5in guns) on the Mk XVI skin as this is closer in shape and performance to the real aircraft.
I'm a bit dubious about the accuracy of the Osprey book now. The aircraft Twinboom posted is described as a Mk IXE but the cannon layout shown on the profile is a Mk IXC. I suspect its more likely to be an E and that the artist screwed up. Without a photo its hard to tell.
The profile of my original Spit IX skin is actually shown twice inside the Osprey book with different descriptions, one says 1944 the other 1948. I think I'll shelve this skin until I get better info on it.

Cool spits fellas. Always good to see something different.

Woo! Thanks Ranger. I had this dl'd... by far my favourite mission.
I find it refreshing to see more missions based around the war and not just the US :P

Thanks for posting those plastic kit photos Twinboom but it is pretty much the same scheme that Jocko is planning to do. As its a Spit IXE it would be skinned as a Spit XVI for AH. I'm pretty sure now that my original scheme is from WW2 and the 1948 Osprey reference is a mistake on their part.

I'm going to submit my original Spit IX scheme TB. I've read that only 26 GIAP used the all dark green scheme on their Spit IXs. Osprey has the same profile inserted in the same book under two different headings. One says 26 GIAP 1944 and the other 19 IAP 1948, I think the 19 IAP one is wrong.
Maybe I'll do the VVS Spit V some other time, although all the Mk V slots are full now and I believe Jocko has alredy done a VVS Mk V. For now I've decided to start on a new project, the Il-2M3 needs some skins.
