Title: Tonights Snapshot "Skeeter Season"
Post by: hornet36 on January 14, 2009, 05:06:50 AM
The event starts at 10pm EST in the SEAII...to many aircraft in this one not to have fun...has i little bit for everyone... :rock

December 1944  Germany

11:00AM

Air Chief Marshal of Bomber Command from February 1942 till the end of the war in 1945 stated that he had no faith in the Oil Plan but added that, even so, he had ordered his Command to carry out the various Directives sent to him on this subject and make attacks on oil targets. This is true, but only up to a point. In December 1944 over 30 per cent of Bomber Command’s attacks were on cities and fewer than 8 percent on oil.

“We were returning from a daylight raid over France, relaxing was we neared the Channel and listening to Glen Miller on the radio when a Fw190 appeared alongside. The pilots was apparently out of ammo, for he flew along just out of range, grinning at us, giving us the thumbs-up, and pointing at the nude stradding a bomb that Colin Clark had painted on the nose…” - Bill Borrows

“We take off at 0500 hrs and head in over Denmark and then south-eset to the target. . the first squadron in does not get too much flak, but we catch hell! It seems like the sun is blotted out, and it is also accurate. They told us 85 guns would be turned on us and there were all that. The Germans also tried to cover the target using smoke pots, but the strong westerly winds blew it away.” – Albert Jones

Excerpts from: The Bomber War by Robin Neillands

This event will focus on a daylight mission with multiple drops over several city targets.

Skeeter Season

Artist Credit: Dux screen shot

May, 1944, North Sea. Many coastal command and Fleet Air Arm squadrons were tasked with intercepting shipments of ore from Norway to Germany, largely to interrupt the supply of essential metals for armaments. Tungsten was one such critical metal and was important to the development of high-temperature resistant turbine blades for Jumo jet engines. Due to continuing shortages of tungsten the Germans had to make do with nickel alloys that would not hold up to the heat of a Jumo jet engine. The engines of the Me-262 were not reliable in large part to the actions of the RAF and RCAF Mosquito squadrons over the North Sea. This Snap Shot features flights of Mosquito attack aircraft of 404 'Buffalo' Squadron RCAF armed with machine guns, cannons, 500 lb bombs and 'rocket projectiles' escorted by Corsair IIs of 1834 Squadron Fleet Air Arm. German Bf-109-G6 interceptors of IV./JG 5 'Eismeer' are scrambled to intercept.
