This late 60's toy I had suddenly popped into my head
(http://gamesandbeyond.com/zeroid/zerak2.jpg)
So,lets get nostalgic. What toys did you have?
-
BTW anyone remember the name of this toy?
It was rubberband propeller driven. and you could use it with wheels on it to go over the ground (flat surface) or put skies on it and it would go over water.
In my case I discovered it worked great on snow.
Cant remember what they were called though.
I DO remember they came out around the same time or a little before
Quisp and Quake cereal
-
Pretty soon we're going to have an Aces High- AARP edition. If it came out around Voyage to the Bottom of Sea. have no clue Dred.I had a Spiderman action figure that flew down some filament line...Had the original Tonka Toys(many tonka toy smack down with my older brothers).hmmm..1st model I built was a Hurri2C..

WOW your family must have been rich!!
Probably had a TV an all!
When I was a kid in Jersey we had a "stick" and a "ball".
We used to play a game called (are ya ready for this?) "Stickball".
We would while away the summer hours playing stickball and snacking on playdough.
Cool topic.
-
I forgot about stick ball...we had a Bobby Hull hockey goal set...where has time gone besides away..?

You aint had your rear end busted until it's been blistered by a piece of '70s Hotwheel track. ;) :D

The toy I can't seem to find a picture of (and i've seen one recently somewhere durn it) was a large WW2 era aircraft carrier.
It had these little foam f4u's and you would pull this lever on it to launch the planes.
I LOVED that thing.

My brother and I used to have little wars with a cruiser that shot missiles and aircraft and a little
tank you could ride that shot those little white plastic bullets from it's cannon. Used to drive my parents
nuts stepping on all that plastic aftermath :D
-
I know what your talking about , lute..It was made by Mattel
-
We used to get those little green soldiers and set them up in the dirt out in the barn and shoot at them with our BB guns from up in the hay loft. It was hours and hours of fun.
Another thing that I used to love to do was draw little stick figure airplanes dogfighting each other. I would sketch them in different positions as they moved around the page fighting each other. Sometimes when nobody can see, I still do that in meetings when I am bored. :D

My brother had it. I believe it was called "Attack Carrier w/ 2 Flying Ace planes". They were Hogs. Yes, it was Mattel.
My favorite would have to be my still in a garbage bag "Cobra Rattler" or "Optimus Prime". But then, I think of the fun my brother and I had playing this:
We'd double up rubber bands on the Crossbows, etc.

Oh heck yeah I remember that thing. I also had some of the foam F-15's and some other jets that you could launch off of slingshot type things. You could set the wings in place and I think it was called "1975 Mattle Model#9375, Attack Carrier Flag Ship w/2 flying ace planes"...got that off another board just a minute ago. http://www.megomuseum.com/community/showthread.php?t=7192
I had tons of airplanes that launched off the carriers too. I wonder if my parents still have that thing in the shop??? They kept all kinds of junk from that time when I was a kid.

I had the helicopter.. I think it was called the Whirly-Bird playset or something.. It had a little hook and you could try and pick up things with it..
And the water-rocket was awesome.. They sold them at the Ice-Cream shop up the street. We used to go on little sprees and launch these the whole day..
We tried to get a few to explode by over pumping them.. But they just sprung leaks.. I launched one at a car once and this dude chased me through
backyards until I sneaked into a neighbors garage and hid there until he was gone..

How much money do you think the average AHer wasted on wind up balsa airplanes in his or her youth?

Wow, Laser Tag, I had almost forgotten about that, I had that when I was about 9, that was probably one of my favorite toys when I was a kid. My gun stopped working after about a year though, still had the vest and sensor up until a few years ago, but I threw them away.

I remember those! They were damn near the length of a coffee table.
Never got one but always wanted one.
Thew kid next door had one we used to play with all the time.

My best friend and I gave up buying the ones in the little plastic bag.
We just bought the balsa wood and designed our own.
Many many hours doing that
-
I was a little old for this one. buy my buddies kid brother had one that he used to ride around like a nut on the cul de sac we lived on. riding it as fast as he could and then spin out doing doughnuts.
I still laugh when I think of the insane expression on that little kid riding that thing

Used to play this for hours on end. Eventually upgraded to the electronic version (high end) which was nothing more than a noise maker lol.
Then there's Jarts. Great game. Banned in the US and Canada I think in the 80's for obvious reasons. My brother and I didn't help fight the ban when we would sharpened the tips and use the cats and dogs for artillery practise :O (Damn we took a beating for that :rofl)

Dinky toys, especially heavy metal tanks with chain treads that moved, and the howitzer or antiaircraft gun that you could put a cap in for a bang as the spring shot a ladyfinger firecracker out the barrel.
Those 10-cent balsa gliders.
And the 10-cent rubber or plastic soldiers about two inches high.
Whiffleballs with skinny wooden or fat plastic bats.
And lately the great Matchbox Collectible 1/72 diecast metal WWII and Korean war airplanes.

It fits on your back,
It's good for a snack,

I had all the tonka stuff which was great but my favorite was a batman helicoter was on a wire and just did circles but I loved it. I couldn't find a picture. Was back in early 80s when I had it.
-
I always think back to a toy I had in the 60s. Was a fan mounted on a platform and a joystick and throttle. You moved the fan with the joystick and used the throttle to increase and decrease the RPMs. You had balloons with plastic legs taped on as the aircraft. You sit in the middle of the room and could use the fan to capture the balloon and fly it anywhere in the room and then land.
This article is about that toy. 1960s toy fan with balloon flies (http://1960s toy fan with balloon flies)

Anyone Remember the Big Trak?

The Evel Kneivel Motorcycle and Winnebego set.

Stretch Armstrong!
And my favorite toy of my youth, can't imagine how many hours we would spend setting hundreds of these things up in the garden or living room. The original Plastic army men!
-
Does anyone remember the little plastic firemen? (I grew up in a firefighter family, spent more time at teh firehouse than at home) Seeing those army men reminded me- when I was bout 5, I shoved about 100 of them through the ventilatiion hole under the kitchen cabinets, not realizing that I'd never be anble to get them out again! They're still there almost 25 years later.
If they ever tear my dads house down, I'm getting them little SOBs back and giving them a good firm talking too...

My 5 year old son has about 300 of those little firemen and equal numbers of policemen and astronauts. However he has inherited about 1000 of the army men and several tanks and other accoutrement of plastic army warfare from his 12 year old brother.

I'll bet most of the kids of people on this board have all kinds of military toys, mine sure do.

I remember when I was about 7 or 8, we used to take our Red Ryder BB guns, remove the BB sized barrel and shroud to where there was just the metal outer sleeve left, pump them up about 50 times, and shoot rocks at each other, usually from point blank range.
Then one of our moms would ask what we were up to out there, we just answer "Nothin, just playin' army."
Really puts an end to those annoying "I shot you!" "Nuh-uh, you missed!" arguments. :aok

Yup, it walked. So did the Diplodocus, Triceratops, Torosaurus, Stegosaurus, and the improperly name Brontosaurus.
Glad someone else remembers them, I've gotten more blank stares when I mention them to people, even guys my own age. :aok

LOL what a great topic! Ive had many of those toys. The CV with foam F4us..also had the island airbase version. The Tonka Winnebago. Wow that almost brought a tear. Verti birds, bigwheels. Loved em all. Karaya my little brother and I used to have that game as well. Actually it was his and we'd set up all the army men and use the catapults to knock em down.
One toy I never had was LiteBrite. But I do remember the jingle.
"Lite Brite making things with Liiiight...outta sight making things with LiteBrite."
Thene the announcer would chime in..."With refills you can make Bugs Bunny and Bozo the Clown!"
LOL

I also bought Subbuteo, in late 1970īs I think. I've kept it safe and we just recently played it with my son :)
Airfix soldiers 1:72 and 1:32 sets... many of them. We had huge wars built outside in sand :)
They still exist: http://www.airfix.com/airfix-products/dioramas-and-figures/figures/?page=1

Ps - who had Lincoln Logs? They worked good with the little green soldiers and firecrackers.

Wondering why nobody mention the bionic man doll. remember you can look through his eye and that karate chop arm lol.

Wow, great topic.
I remember way back, I had a plastic spy ship about the length of a coffee table. (At least that's how big I remember it to be...probably smaller in real life!) It looked like a freighter, but when you slid open a telescoping midsection it exposed a hidden spring powered missile launcher. Think there were other gadgets as well, like a satellite or radar dish...
Like you guys said, hours of fun with that thing.
And there was a plastic race car set designed with a figure 8 cross over -- and the cars had exploding parts, so that when there was a collision cool stuff popped off. Not to mention the variety of Hot Wheels sets and parts, all gravity powered, so you could clamp the start on a mantel or something and send cars zipping across loops, high G turns, and up and down furniture obstacles all over the place.
And action figures that were sized for kids instead of adults? 12inch GI Joes, "Johnny West" dolls that looked exactly like Robert Conrad (who was then doing Wild Wild West). Copy cat figures of knights, whose faces looked the same as GI joe but had old fashioned beards. And all the GI Joe accessories! I remember a yellow truck with trick doors and all sorts of cool attachments..some kind of early 70s mobile command car. Even a plastic "jet" that would hold a 12" GI joe, balanced nicely enough that it actually kinda worked as a glider...(course, it had a drop rate close to that of a brick, but it seemed amazing to me at the time)
Good times.

I did have the 6 Million Dollar Man "Action Figure" (Never say doll). Good call on that one.
Also, I had some sort of "erector set" that came with all these short black plastic rods that you would melt together (like a faux weld) to build stuff. It made a very distinct smell and once in a while I will smell something similar that takes me back. Anyone else suffer the same fate with this toy?
-
Estes model rockets
erector set
hot wheels
bicycle
chemistry set
leather tooling set
woodburning set
BB guns
How did we live to be this old with all of those dangerous toys

How did we live to be this old with all of those dangerous toys
Simple -- those toys were parents' clever plan to eliminate the stupid. Notice how much less capable the protected youngins of today seem?
I say bring back the Jarts!! :devil
-
Bring back jarts and outlaw helmets. :aok
-
i had action man with rubber griping hands,i think you yanks called them gi joe's.
Airfix had a thing in England called flight deck, had a phantom fighter on a long lump of string and you had to land it on the carrier.
Also had tonka toys although they were never as strong as the tv adverts.Found a tonka dump truck a few weeks ago at work so decided to try like they did on the tv ad and stick my lorry front wheel in the back.
One very flat tonka toy
-
I remember this odd smelling stuff you mixed and put on a staw then made like a ballon out of it. can't remember the name of that stuff . but surely wasn't good for us
-
I remember that, I still swear it was the same stuff they covered school bus seats with.
-
No pics but...
Capsella brings back memories.. had that.
Estes model rockets
I was lucky, had a dad into RC so starting @ Age 6, through today, have had many an RC airplane and Heli.
Erector set....
Had an old 8088 PC as my first computer
there was another "build" set i had.. cant remember the name of it to save my life.... It had these "I beam" looking things, they were grey.. had various electric motors which these things could attach to, also could attach wheels to the motors. Came with a BIG control board to control the various things. You could make stuff like robots, walking bugs, etc etc. Anyone know what im talking about?
Also had a KITT toy which you could open the hood, and program a set of instructiosn into, then hit the GO button and it would do various things... go forward slow, then speed up, turn, honk the horn, open the t-tops, talk, etc. All absed on what you programmed it to do with the keypad. That was fun!
(edit)
Found the name of the "building" set i was talking about...
Called ROBOTIX. Aparrently the sets have been sold since 1984 until PRESENT! Even though distributers have changed several times, the NEW sets remain completely backwards compatible with the old ones! WOW! should get a set for.. uhm... my kid! lol

I had one of those. I remember my mom saying it cost them a small fortune at the time.
My father used to race those competitively at some hall a couple towns over from where we lived and used to take me there on saturdays sometimes.
Right after the barber shop and just before we hit the bar LOL I was like 6 or 7.
He'd get us a couple of bags of peanuts and hot dogs. I'd get a couple of cokes and him a couple beers and we'd wath the ball game on the bar TV or the horse races.
Back then it was no big deal.
Back then it was close to being a ritual
Cant bring a little kind into a bar these days.

LOL yup. same here. Lotta Yankee fans in my area. My ol Man was a Dodgers fan. when they moved out west he just couldnt stomach the thought of becoming a Yankee fan. So when the Mets came into being. He naturally became a Met fan.
Now this was the era of manager Casey Stengel "Can anybody play this game? Amazins Pre 1969 worst to first team. Where just about every game was a comedy of errors highlight film
So I got teased alot.
Naturally I developed a deep hatred of the Yankees that, even though Im not a huge baseball fan now. Survives to this day
In any event I remember taking Bobby Mercer And Micky Mantle cards and doing that with them out of spite. Much to the horror of my friends.
Yea yea I know. Dont I wish I had those cards now. Hell yea. but fact of the matter is my mother had a nasty habit of throwing away my boxes of "worthless" baseball cards when she did spring cleaning. so I wouldnt have em now anyway.
So I aint kicking myself over it.
She does though LMAO

Whats with the camoflaged engine??
-
Hey Blooz does your Steam engine take the couple drops of oil for Smoke ? Those were really cool .
Dred remember the huge slot tracks ? I raced at everyone I could find Back in my Air Force days ... toss in a dime ... and get someone to lay a buck down and the Race was on !... I had a small fortune in my cars back then.
these days its about 30 bucks a car and the 1/32nd car models make great sacrifices for additional bodies.
you guys should see what a 1/32nd eldon Drag race set goes for ...they bring about a grand on ebay these days.
-
It's not my layout. Just a pic I snagged off the net.
My layout had a little less track and more scenery.
The only engines I ever saw that smoked were Lionel. Mine were HO (when I was younger) and N scale (when I got older) layouts.
N scale is my fav. It's half as big as HO scale so you get to spend twice the amount of money per square foot of space...lol.
I'm hoping to pick the hobby back up again someday soon. Lots o' fun!

I had all the Adventure people stuff the Wilderness patrol plane/boat turned into a float plane :aok
