Title: Rock n Roll Hall of Fame or Shame?
Post by: RELIC on January 15, 2009, 11:10:46 AM
Run-DMC gets in the R&R Hall of Fame and the Stooges get passed over again...  :huh

What a joke.  They are inches away from being every bit as absurd as the Grammys.

It's not rock and roll hall of fame it's the pop music hall of crap.

Wasn't Madona inducted last year? Now Run DMC, I would not consider either one of those performers rock and roll musicians.

It is a joke.

not entirely but it is kind of a joke, now rolling stone magazine, that has become a huge joke, there are more articles in there on rappers these days than rock and roll, and it was made to report on rock and roll...

I'd like to see a list of people inducted into the HOF since it's inseption, then make a list of how many of them SHOULD be in before SRV.  Me thinks the 2nd list would be quite short.

Rolling Stone Magazine - what a mockery of itself - and don't forget that waste of airwaves called MTV.

Unfortunately like everything else it has become political.

They call it Rap or Hip Hop because that is what it is.  It isn't rock and roll.

I grew up in the 50s' when rock and roll was becoming popular.  From Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee etc. to Elvis.

Buddy Guy a great guitarist...might be classified as a Blues guitarist he played for Muddy waters.  No matter he's one of the best I've heard.

Jimi Hendrix emulated Buddy Guy.  Hendrix was a huge fan of Buddy Guy.  I guess people forget.

Early guitarists from the Ventures, the Shadows and Duane Eddy....not to mention Les Paul etc.  They helped form Rock and Roll.

And BB King?  Robert Cray is spectacular imho also.  Some are in the Hall....some aren't.

The R&R Hall of fame has become as our Govt. has......a mere shadow of what it stands for and is supposed to be.

Also remember....there is a difference between a Musician and a Technician.  To be classified as a Musician you must be both.

We have way to many technicians standing in high regard these days in music.  They aren't Musicians.

Hank Marvin is one of the best.

Man, I just caught Buddy Guy at the Cain's last month, he was absolutely fantastic!  He's an old man but he can still tear it up.  I thought he was a member though, guess that shows what I know.

It was a great concert though, Cain's is one of the best places for concerts ever.

The inherent problem with any exclusive club like RRHF is that you can't maintain the exclusiveness without offending people and as soon as you start worrying about things like offending people and "fairly" representing all flavors and colors any semblance of integrity goes right out the window.  For example, Percy Sledge sang a beautiful song but one hit should not get you into the hall of fame.  Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers sang a wonderful song but one hit should not get you into the hall of fame.

The telling tale was in 2007 when Jann Wenner decided that the hall of fame could not wait another year for a rap act to be inducted and chose Grand Master Flash over the Dave Clark Five even thought the DCF had received more votes.

The whole thing has turned into a big joke.  I still like to watch the performances though.  Seeing the Police perform again was a treat and even though it has become a farce there was a great sense of pride watching a very humble Bob Seger accept his induction.

Can you imagine what a total ripoff it will be in another twenty years when the American Idol contestants start becoming eligible?

R&R Hall of Fame pretty dumb all around, but no Stooges is just a crime.  And no T. Rex is an atrocity.

Rolling Stone Magazine - what a mockery of itself - and don't forget that waste of airwaves called MTV.

Rolling Stone USED to be a great source of industry insider information--as well as all the charts, new artist features, and was targeted at industry professionals (we're talking up to about 1995 or so).  Non-industry folks read it because it was nice for them to have a window into what we got to see before most other folks did.

Sadly, the editors and publishers wanted to take the magazine to the mass public...many of the experienced contributors balked and left.  Rather than find other experienced people they just hired recent grads (with the empitus that since they were going to target the mainstream public and males/females 15 to 25 that they might as well hire those "living the life" to do it.  Industry people dumped it and went back to Radio & Records, Allaccess.com, FMQB (was about to go out of business).  They went from punchy, powerful, and insightful articles and exposes to lengthy, bogged down, boring, (many times politically slanted) mush.  While readers did get 2 page articles on The Red Hot Chili Peppers (in '95), they also got 10 page articles of mush on why Madonna, TuPac, PeDiddy, and Biggie Smalls were more of a trailblazer than Elvis or BB King.  Only the young folks actually believed the mush.

What it's been since 1998 is beyone me because that was when I ditched my subscription.

The Hall has and always been a platform to be batted around like a tetherball at the whims of whatever niche group can stuff the ballot box at the time.  Real trailblaizers still sit by the sidelines waiting for their induction, while some flash-in-the-pans still get nominated.
