Title: R.I.P Indie 103.1
Post by: Ack-Ack on January 16, 2009, 02:42:49 PM
*sigh* LA's only true independent radio station went off the air yesterday.  Now the only radio options are the crap LA stations like KROQ(which has been crap since the late '80s, just like San Diego's 91X).  Sad day for those that like alternative music.

Now if only someone would make a device that will allow you to receive Intardnet radio stations in your car.

Indie Activist:

This is an important message for the Indie 103.1 Radio Audience -

Indie 103.1 will cease broadcasting over this frequency effective immediately. Because of changes in the radio industry and the way radio audiences are measured, stations in this market are being forced to play too much Britney, Puffy and alternative music that is neither new nor cutting edge. Due to these challenges, Indie 103.1 was recently faced with only one option --- to play the corporate radio game.

We have decided not to play that game any longer. Rather than changing the sound, spirit, and soul of what has made Indie 103.1 great Indie 103.1 will bid farewell to the terrestrial airwaves and take an alternative course.

This could only be done on the Internet, a place where rules do not apply and where new music thrives; be it grunge, punk, or alternative - simply put, only the best music.

For those of you with a computer at home or at work, log on to www.indie1031.com and listen to the new Indie 103.1 - which is really the old Indie 103.1, not the version of Indie 103.1 we are removing from the broadcast airwaves.

We thank our listeners and advertisers for their support of the greatest radio station ever conceived, and look forward to continuing to deliver the famed Indie 103.1 music and spirit over the Internet to passionate music listeners around the world.

All you need is a WiFi/MP3 capable phone, and hook it up to your car stereo.  Then you can play intardnet music in your car.

As long as your car stereo has and input for mp3 players you should be fine.

OH My God! I feel old. I remember when I was a kid and KROQ hit the air. It was new wave.

We used to listen to KMET and KLOS. :rock

There was also one cool a.m. station called the Mighty 690. Good one on the weekends.

Yeah, used to listen to Rodney on the ROQ when I was a kid and Dr. Demento on KMET (Too Hip Gotta Go) before moving down to San Diego.  After KROQ and 91X got out by Clear Channel, they just turned into your typical corporate radio station and were no longer 'indie' stations like they once were.

But now that someone informed me that all is not lost and I can use my phone to get it, the future doesn't look so bleak anymore.

KROQ is just garbage, but yes, the radio options here in SoCal are the pits, but so is everything else.

If such things bother you though then you should head further north.  Everything just gets better the further you go (the radio, the weather, the women, the food, the cost of living, etc.).  Starting at Santa Barbara you get some good radio stations, you get some more as you head towards Santa Cruz and Frisco, and then there is my paradise where multiple reggae radio stations and good rock stations exist up in Humboldt.  Hell I even get better radio options driving in the middle of the Sacramento Valley on the I-5.

You mean there are radio stations not owned by Clear Channel?

IMPOSSIBLE!

I still refuse to listen to 94.7 The Wave... KMET was a little bit of defiance we all could share growing up. Dr. Demento on Sunday nights was a must.

Ack, does your car stereo have an aux input?
If it does then you're in luck.
If not get one of these.

I don't think they come in 8 track though.
