Circity City decided that it is closing all the US stores with clearance sales starting Saturday the 17th. Wonder what kind of deals they will be having starting Saturday?
-
Circuit glazety...never cared for them...sign of the times...prolly make out pretty good...from what I read they ignored the threat that Best Buy presented a few years ago to dominate the electronics sales industry and hence suffered for it..its a shame..
-
I wouldnt mind checking it out, but the closest one is 50 miles away.
No thanks, too overpriced for me anyways
-
i always found them to be pricey...
-
All of the good stuff will be taken by the outgoing staff.
-
Too pricey, and terrible service. Didn't Family Guy lampoon their clueless employees with Stewie asking the salesman questions about the printer and the guy responding to every question with "Yeah, you can get faxes on this thing", or something along those lines?
I know every time I was there, I got the impression that they were on their first day on their own and were just recited canned answers from a list to all of your questions.
No great loss to see them go under.
-
And 30,000 people lose their job, lets all chuckle.
-
No one is chuckling about 30,000 people losing their jobs, but try this on for perspective
The Washington Post, December 29th, 2000
Montgomery Ward Inc., one of the oldest names in American retailing and the originator of catalogue shopping, is shutting its doors after 128 years, the company said yesterday.
Oddly enough, we went on to have a major economic boom after 2000, and other stores opened.
Just like it will this time.
Things change, we move on, that's the way it goes. Of course, we could establish a system of protecting everything, but imagine if we did that with the wagon wheel industry.

change is inevitable

If it goes anythink like COMP USA went around here.
You still can get a better deal on Newegg LOL
-
I'm gonna go tomorrow I think to check it out. There's one just about a mile away.
-
Good Riddance....
-
I'll check it out....there is one here in a middle of nowhere.
-
circuit crappy is really already gone. the liquidators own it now. same thing happend with linens and things. they will mark up the prices, then offer 20%-40% off to start which is still more than the original price.
people around here found out what they did at linens and things when they pulled the price tags off to see the original prices. Iirc think wfaa did a big news story about the price gouging.
I checked lastnight and their site was down so ya cant compare prices from a few days ago to now. It's gonna be a big rip-off. maybe at the end you can get a deal but by then all the good stuff will be gone

Yup.
I checked out my local CompUSA when it was going out of biz. for a new Vid. card. It was still MUCH cheaper at NewEgg. I found a local shop right down the road that beat CompUSA's "clearance" price by $20-40.00. (I would rather buy local than use NewEgg if possible)

when will it be Best Buys turn?
the on line folks may last longer but if the trend continues to accelerate, many of them will die as well.
it is a terrible circle ... hope the 30k out of work CC ppl find employment of some kind soon
we are in for even worse times ahead IMO - "change" can be "Change" for the worse as well ......
-
After they fired their long term employees and offered to hire them back at reduced pay a couple of years ago, I quit even reading their adds.

I went to Circuit City before the holidays to buy a new digital camera. The guy working there seemed to be knowledgeable. I decided on a particular camera and he said it was a good choice, and I could get it for $15 cheaper if I went to circuitcity.com.
What? It's on sale but only at the company's website? I said OK, thanks, and left.
I went next door to H.H. Gregg and they had the same model in stock at the circuitcity.com price. It seems a stupid business practice to have your company's web site competing with your brick and mortar stores.

They're catering to different crowds. To stereotype, older folks who don't really shop on the intertubes still shop in stores. While younger generations are going to shop and compare online. Their warehouses that ship circuitcity.com's stuff has A LOT less overhead than the actual store. Comparing prices on the internet takes seconds so they have to keep their prices low to compete, while at the brick and mortar store, how many people are going to shop all around town for that extra $10 off?
I went to CC today and everything was 10% off, 20% on DVD's and 30% of accessories that usually have a pretty good gross profit percentage. The parking lot was packed, and it filled the two neighboring stores as well. Some people were walking away with HDTV's and stuff but I saw a lot of people that walked out empty handed. I guess if I was in the market and had the money, I may have considered buying a TV, but with "All sales final" I'll pass.

I bought a 55" RCA big screen demonstrator from CC a few years ago. Got it home and it worked for an hour then quit. CC offered me my money back, but I wanted it repaired. They referred me to RCA/Thompson. After several months sitting in their shop it was decided it couldn't be repaired and the model had been discontinued.
Long story short, RCA gave me a 65" 1080p HDTV as compensation. Paid $500 for the original, the replacement cost $2500.
-
I wonder where if it will be one of those deals where they sell the entire stock to a 3rd party. Then the 3rd party marks the prices up to an outrageous amount and then says it's 50% off.
Seen that many many times over the years.

I had a similar situation with an RCA TV. They came to my house to replace my TV with a newer model at no charge to me. They have excellent customer service.

For Christmas, found a little x-box keypad, typing thingie there that nobody else had in stock. I'll be disappointed if the rest of the electronics places around here don't step up their stock selection and there's no circuit city around to pick up the slack.

Already been done. I checked out CC yesterday. they had several HDTV's for over 1k. I checked several sunday ads for the same tv's all 100-200 dollars cheaper. Now here's the kicker. The sunday paper carried CC's ad from before the bankruptcy, the SAME tv was $899.00
The store is selling it 20% off for $1250.00 :furious
I think ill wait another week or two then go back for a new game, dvd and maybe a new nifty keyboard. the lights on mine are starting to wear out.
