just finished a book by Richard Herman, jnr called FireBreak (good series of books btw).
theres a character in the book called ambler furry (F-15E back seater)and he has a set of rules for survival (hence post name) some are VERY relevant to this game so i thought id post them.
1) Always remember your jet was made by the lowest bidder.
2) Train like you plan to fight.
3) If you're up to your eyeballs I'm gomers, you're in combat.
4) When in doubt, use industrial strength deterrence.
5) Never fly in the same cockpit with someone who is braver than you.
6) Priorities are man-made, not God-made.
7) A plan never survives the first thirty seconds of combat.
8 ) If it's stupid but works, it ain't stupid.
9) Only turn to blow the opposition away; otherwise, run away and fight another guy.
10) Always honor a threat.
11) Know the opposition.
12) Know when it's time to get out of Dodge.
13) Alway know how to get out of Dodge.
14) The important things are always simple.
15) The simple things are always hard.

much to complex,
i follow the 3 simple Rules Rules by Erich Hartmann, german top ace 352 shotdowns:
1) if you have no advantage, turn away, coffeebreak
2) if you are badly outnumberd, disengage, coffeebreak
3) only attack from above, keep your speed, keep your altitude
(later on in his book he simply remarks, all younger pilots, died after 4-5 sorties, because they begun a turnfight, mostly outnumberd)
-
7) A plan never survives the first thirty seconds of combat.
I've heard this described as.
No battle plan survives 1st contact with the enemy. Thats why he is called the enemy

much to complex,
i follow the 3 simple Rules Rules by Erich Hartmann, german top ace 352 shotdowns:
1) if you have no advantage, attack, what have you got to lose?
2) if you are badly outnumberd, attack more recklessly, coffeebreak
3) only attack from above, keep your speed, keep your altitude untill you are finished drinking the coffee

No, you don't get it. Murphy was a <fill in the blank with what you're talking about> is one of Murphy's laws. Murphy understands your pain, he does what you do.
