Title: Addition to damage display.
Post by: FYB on January 19, 2009, 02:38:16 PM
We have the Damage Display List and i use very often, mostly bombers. I think if we could add a plane model picture, 2D, with different sections or areas, such as a single engine light bomber, that would have 11 sections; that could be placed in the E6B or any where else you might think is a good place. Plus the picture could be re sized to fit the small space.
Starts from left to right:
1. Wing Tip {L} (100%) [G]
2. Wing Base {L} (98%) [G]
3. Engine (94%) [G] --- If an Engine fire happens, or a fire in any area, the percentage its at will start declining until you know what.
4. Cockpit (92%) [G]  --- If the pilot is wounded it automatically goes to 49% and declining until the pilot is dead, at 0%.
5. Tail Gunner (96%) [G]
6. Wing Base {R} (87%) [G]
7. Wing Tip {R} (84%) [Y]
8. Tail Base (79%) [Y]
9. Tail Tip (62%) [Y]
10. Small Wing {L} (31%) [R]
11. Small Wing {R} (9%) [D]

If you happen to catch fire for the number 3 in this example, the small damage list to the left will have #3 turn (U) which is the color purple for [Unknown] percentage; such as the engine is at 100%, then it will start declining down... 99%, 98% and so on until you die or it gets put out.

                      Color:
100% - 85% [G]|Green
84% - 50% [Y]  |Yellow
49% - 10% [R]  |Red
9% - 0% [D]     |Gray
100% - ? (U)    |Purple

[D] = Dead or nearly Dead/Destroyed
(U) = Unknown Percentage

Something went horribly wrong.

100% - 85% [G]
84% - 50% [Y]
49% - 10% [R]
9% - 0% [D]
100% - ? (U)

[G] = Green
[Y] = Yellow
[R] = Red
[D] = Gray for Dead or destroyed
(U) = Purple for Unknown percentage

I tried putting the picture in but it wouldn't let me, something happened i hope you guys can imagine what im asking for.

Sorta, you didnt get the 2D picture i tried to put up.  :D
It would tell you the different areas that have been damaged to what percentage.

Does this assume a wing with 10% of its damage potential remaining only provides 10% lift?  I think you crashed and burned long before you made it all the way through your damage display...I also think you play WoW too much...  :D

Pilots had any of this information in WWII, so that's my reason for saying no.  A quick look at your wing and a count of bullet holes could tell ya if you think you should set 'er down or not.

I agree,  IMO is too much gamey.

Good idea but I wouldn't want it. I don't want to know exactly what my damage % is.

This would be a nice thing to have, +1.

Partial damage (just a third color added to green and red in the damage list) would be as realistic as it ought to get.. The pilot would know something's up with the part, not what percentage damage that part's at. The percentage damage makes no difference in the game anyway, you either have a part or it's entirely gone.

While I agree that the pilot should know if something is up with that part or not, I think it should be done by feeling.  Ie. when the wing has become swiss cheese, it's going to have less lift and will probably sink to that side.

In other words, we should feel damage, not look at it.

Disclaimer: I realize this is a game and it's never going to be 100% realistic, but why not try to get close? :)

It would be nice if we could visualize damage on our a/c more easily, it would easily replace the damage screen we have now.

I'm against the expanding of the damage screen, here are my suggestions;

1. Improve damage modeling  (engines running rough, less efficient controls for damage, flap damage- stuck flap or a missing flap altogether).

2. Improve hit sprites (make the hit sprite have 2-5 different pics and have AH randomly choose between them, it would make a 'quick fix')

3. Change the graphics for pilot wounds to indicate severity (ie more blood, the worse the wound).

4. Allow oil/radiator/fuel tank hits to graphically show severity of leak (small bit of oil on the canopy, compared to what we have now).
--------

The damage display is a work around for missing graphic indicators but I think it could be removed altogether, or make it an arena setting.
