Title: 109G2 skin request (image intensive)
Post by: Treize69 on January 20, 2009, 05:25:10 PM
Could any of you 109 skinners do me a solid and add a better Romanian 109G2 to the rotation? All these ones pictured below are from Escadrila 53 Vanatoare (and part of the "German-Romanian Fighter Wing") at Ploesti in the summer of 1943- they were the Romanian 109s that opposed the Operation Tidal Wave that August. The pic of the pilot climbing down from the wing surrounded by comrades is even supposedly one taken after he landed that day.

Last, a colorised image of the squadron insignia- not good quality, but accurately colored for reference.

I'm getting a no-go on the pics Larry, and when I copy and paste the address, it just takes me to the wings palette frontpage.

EDIT: you fixed it.  :aok

I have those profiles, but they don't match the photos IMO. They don't look properly mottled. The unit and national markings are right, but not the camo job. I've talked to Bogdan Petrascu (the artist) and he said he just did them as "artist representations", which means he fudged them to suit his tastes. His "White 13" that I use as my personal A/C profile also doesn't look anything like the real one its based on.

Good artist, but not an accurate one.

Compare-

with

and I think you'll see what I mean.

Quick question.  Why do alot of the german fighters have mickey mouse art on the side of the plane? TY.

Those are Rumanian, not German. I heard thestory of where the "Lancing Mickey" came from once from Denes Bernad, but I'm drawing a blank right now.

Incidentally, Grupul 7 Vanatoare had a Donald Duck insignia on their Emils, I think the one in game has it on the tail.

The 109 looks more Green/Yellow than Grey/White. When I compare the artist interpretation of the 109 to the photo, I almost can't see the yellow band.

It depends on the film type and the lighting. Two different pics of the same two birds (I'll show them below) almost seem to have the tail stripe different colors, on what is obviously the same two aircraft and possibly even taken on the same day, but from different angles and probably on different rolls of film.

They look like a dark, orangey-yellow in this one-

And almost white on these two-

The white rudder and yellow tail stripe on White 7 almost appear to be the same color in the top photo, but obviously aren't in this one-

Confused yet?

Plus the blurrier pics, mostly the ones from Dan Melinte's collection, are stills from a wartime film, while the others are regular photos.

Funny thing Treize.  I just posted a request on a Hurri 1 with the same nose art.

Do you have a preference as to which one you want? 1,3 or 7?

I think 1 looks the most interesting with that heavy mottle, but 3 and 7 with their spots (and 7 with its different rudder) look unique too.

Disney cartoons during the 30's into the 40's where big box office hits world wide. A lot of country's who participated in WWII had Disney nose art on their aircraft.

Yeah, the squadron markings are almost always on both sides with ARR aircraft.

"I've talked to Bogdan Petrascu (the artist) and he said he just did them as "artist representations", which means he fudged them to suit his tastes."

It seems that he made the assumption that I would have made too that the Romanian 109s would have the default two RLM grays on top of fuselage and wings and that only the mottling would be more or less repainted in Romanian unit to suit their taste.

From actual pictures it seems that there is not a thin stripe of default camo paint on upper part of the fuselage or default angular camo pattern on the wings. Only one faint picture of very different camo from German type on the wings. Also no national insignia on top of wing?

Was the light blue used in those Romanian 109s the standard RLM65 (or 76?) or was it their own colour as a base over the whole aircraft over which the Romanian type camo was painted? Did they use all standard RLM colours?
