How about making them "sky blue" instead of yellow? Yellow is a very visible color, and useful for icons. Sky blue is useless for icons, but would still be visible against the green map background.
I use yellow icons for my (very brave) squadies. Now, I'm wondering what they're doing spread all over the map. ;)

Same here. I use blue for friends and yellow for enemies. I was chasing map rooms all night.

Same here, I used yellow for squaddies too. Now I've changed squad colour to lilac which is about the only other colour that stands out against blue and green.
Any chance of having a manually set town icon colour?

Agree, yellow is too useful and prominent to be used for map rooms -- please make them a more subtle color.

I use yellow for enemy, it is one of the best visible colors for day and night. It would be nice to be able to change the color of the map room.

One more problem I have with it... I was using yellow for squaddies until the latest patch, so I switched to orange, which seemed to work okay. Only problem there is when a red dar bar overlaps a yellow town dot, it becomes orange. Near 43 in Baltic map is a good example of this... thought I had a squaddie online but it was just a town.

Those yellow dots are befuddling my tired old brain! Maybe let us turn them off? Toggle with "Names"?
Thanks for listening. :)
