Yeah, it's a minor thing but...
I've got the full-on CH set-up with the differencial brakes, yadda yadda, but I have a few gripes / suggestions:
The differential brakes don't work as well as they should. My experience flying (okay, TAXIING) tail draggers and tri gear planes tells me you can pivot these things on one wheel. Not really possible in AH (shrug)
And what about modeling the tailwheel locking and unlocking? (even if it's set up to auto lock at any speed above 30 kts)
Also, is there some way you could add in sound effects for braking? It'd be cool if you modeled the squealing of the brakes (or wooshing of compressed air for some planes :) )
Nitpicks, I realize...

Well I'll be!
<S> Lemur
Its been a long time.
How in the world do I get in contact with the CMC here? Tried the old web page but its not exactly up to date :)
-
Amen Lemur! It is IMPOSSIBLE to pivot on just 1 wheel in AH. We have all seen it on WWII films when the planes would land, taxi, and park after pivoting...ready for take off. You watch them aim straight for the plane they are going to park next to then at the last moment they hit the brake, turn the rudder and almost slide ride in. I think Brake and piston/strut compression sounds would add to the realism. ;)
-
Hmm, I've pivoted the tricycle gear twins, using the outboard engine, inboard wheel brake and rudder. I think I've done close to, if not exactly, a pivot in a single engine kite, using inboard wheel brake, rudder and engine control. I do know the turns were very tight, if they weren't pivots.
I've most definitely pivoted the Corsair, if you count groundlooping on landing! :D
Cheers

Lemur is correct. It is UNrealistic not to be able to pivot with a locked brake. The brakes on Aces High airplanes are simply too weak. It's not a major issue, but it's there each and every time you fly.

I've done a 'wheelie' on one wheel, turned about 90 degrees and survived with out breaking off the drooping wing. But I've never been able to duplicate that move again.
-
u guys got alot of spare time don't you? I be happy with just getting rid of the balloon tire on the tail, who cares about doing "brodies" on the runway.
-
A crew cheif would eat out a pilot who spun on one wheel. Those tires don't grow on trees! :)
-
Oh, yes indeed!
HTC, please drop everything else and go over the braking/tailwheel unlock modeling.
Forget subs, forget more aircraft, forget improved strat... the really important thing is to be able to pivot sharply on one wheel as the tailwheel unlocks!
Yes, sir... that's what makes an aircombat game... the ability to park in tight places!
Jeez, you guys... step back and take a squint at the big picture.
You have to exit on the runway anyway, right?
I have never even tried to do this in AH. There's no reason for it.

TOAD
You are absolutely right.
HiTech is not interested in making ACES HIGH as realistic as possible, even in the small things. That is why when 2 or 3 guys complain about their 109 or 190's having wings 1" longer in real life, HT fixes it. Or when someone else says that the ammo load is off by 10 bullets it gets fixed.
One of the reasons Aces High is so popular and has earned the respect of the simulation community is that HiTech changes inaccuracies that at times seem insignificant, but ADD to the realism. Sometimes they do it on their own, and sometimes it takes a few to point it out. Sometimes they find little details and send out a patch to fix it. Sometimes its as simple as color markings or a sound file.
Pivoting on 1 wheel is different than tearing up a tire.
- All we are saying is that in REAL WWII planes, you can apply full brakes and do a full engine throttle/RPM check without going anywhere.
-All we are saying is that in REAL WWII planes, you could pivot your plane on one wheel and minimize your turn radius to the space between the wheels.
It may not be a big deal to those who just want to get up there ASAP so they can engage enemy and rack up points, but some of us do take great pride in landing our kills properly, or taxing to the fuel pad without having to use a 50 foot radius in our effort.
It is just one small thing that HiTech can put on its list of things to get to in the future. It's not a DEMAND, its just a suggestion.
:)

Sorry, Mac. I don't buy it.
I think HTC fixes things that actually have an effect in the game.
Wings longer than real life? Undoubtedly, wing size figures into the FM lift/drag computations. Minor, but would affect gameplay.
Ammo load off by 10 bullets? Well either you shoot too long or run out too early. Either one would affect gameplay.
Engine run-up check? Have you EVER checked the mags in AH? No. Because this has absolutely NO EFFECT on gameplay. The engines always run optimally on first takeoff.
Minimize your turn radius on the ground? The ONLY time a WW2 fighter would be doing this is at or below taxi speed while parking or taxing out. Neither have an affect on gameplay in AH.
In other words, this is a request for an absolutely useless "bell and whistle" item, a waste of programming time.

I don't know if you can prefectly pivot, but as mentioned earlier in the thread you can make VERY tight turns. Watch from external view mode offline to see.
IMO it's close enough.

Stop flat spotting tires. Its cold outside.

TOAD,
You COMPLETELY missed my point.
What I am saying is that all it takes is for one or two people to gripe or squeak about "too short a wing.....or this or the ammo load is off by 10 bullets...etc..etc...etc." and HiTech pays attention to it an it gets fixed.
Is 1" gonna make a difference on a wing? Not a big deal. Is 10 bullets gonna get you a kill? Probably not. I agree with you 100%. It doesn't affect gameplay. BUT....and its a BIG BUT, HiTech fixes it. WHY? Because #1 they listen to their customers and #2 they DO want some credibility in their authenticity and realism.
Its just a suggestion when they run out of bugs to fix, or flight models to fix, or new aircraft.
Besides, they have some time. They have enough time to fix the Sheep.
;)

Actually, if you want to go into detail, the entire ground-handling model is whacked out. There's no locking/unlocking tailwheels, every plane has the same brake setup, it's very "generic" overall. IMO it's something that should eventually be changed, but definately not until AH is a "mature product". This might be a good thing to look at in another year or two.

I agree it's not a huge issue, but having stronger brakes would be very useful in Aces High. Sometimes you really need to turn on a dime when approaching the refuel pad, especially to avoid the little hut on the corner.
-
Yeah, that hut must be made out of dynamite or something.
And those sheep-shaped ladmines are just awful!

Be careful what you wish for. If he puts realistic wheel brakes in the game then you will have to deal with dipping the prop in the ground when you get on the brakes on landing. The brakes will not ONLY affect taxing. Personally, I like the brakes the way that they are. The landings are already 'challenging' enough without the added 'hassle' of trying to no nose over on landing. Just my 2 cents.

It used to be like that CobraEye--and I liked it :)

You'll all hopefully note my use of the word "NITPICK" in the thread starter.
My attitude: Make the keyboard / JS button activated brake work perfectly. Complete anti-lock, no nose overs, etc. (like they are now)
Just make an option for the toes brakes to work like they would in the real world. And yeah, it does add to the sim. I'm one of those dweebs who frequently uses the re-arm pad. Or who wants to taxi-back on the carrier so I can take off my fully loaded hog :P
Is this as high a priority as adding in more planes?
HELL NO.
Where I work I'd classify this as a priority 5 feature ("Nice to have, but only if it's a 3 hour or less job.")
I only mention this because if I don't the probability of it being 'fixed' is 0. Now that I have the probability is some infinitesimal number greater than 0 ;)

Really now :)
We give out suggestions and he fixes what he thinks needs fixing . Works pretty damned good IMO .
Now Toad , they said the very same thing when reaper asked to have were we landed be the place we spawned out of the next time we hit the spawn button . NO "they" said , takes to much time etc . But HT fixed it , thank you very much . ( I was always uping at the wrong base ( not the one I landed at )in a bomber and getting that damned ditched message because I left the runway with out moving to go to the "right" field )
Would add that the "little" things kept me coming back over and over again when I was having a hard time learning this game . Things that just weren't there on the other sims . U know what I mean ? Lots of these "little" things really add up .
There's lots of stuff I would like but I am enjoying the "ride" , he's taking us on :)
WTG HT , just keep on sorting the "wheat from the chaff" hehe .
take care all
