P-38s all had a polished patch of bare metal on the inner nacelle to check the position of the nosewheel visually.

It is a mirror so that the pilot could if needed check and see if the nose wheel was down and locked.

yup we had a gear mirror on our 210 nice to be able look and see em :D

If im not mistaken these shots are from around chino but not sure on in flight.
