Ok guys, we're all gamers here. I'd like to see some shots of some REAL games. I guarantee that this thread is going to say something about the ages of the posters. ;) But don't just post pics. I want to hear about them, too, and why you think it belongs on the list of "Great Games of All Time."
This may be one of the BEST adventure game series of all time, and certainly my all-time favorite series period:

Quest for Glory I, with the VGA remake. I miss Sierra's adventures. LucasArts made some good ones, but there is STILL nothing that can compare to the Sierra adventure games of the late 80s and mid-90s. IMO, Quest for Glory was the best of them all, just because of replayability with the multiple character classes and RPG elements. THIS was how to build an RPG. None of that level-up stat boosting. You wanted to get stronger, you actually had to WORK at it.

Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire IMO was the most polished and best all-around game in the series. It was a little more hectic because of the time limit (15 days of in-game time, IIRC) but it had a GREAT story and expanded well on the whole series. The ability to import your character from the previous game was revolutionary, and this had the BEST end-game sequence in the series. Oh, and there's the X-ray Specs easter egg.... This was recently remade into 256-color VGA graphics by AGD Interactive, when Sierra declined doing so themselves.

Quest for Glory III: Wages of War wasn't part of the original plan, but was inserted because the original story was rushing too much (watch the end credits to the EGA version of Trial by Fire to see what I mean). It was also the first to be released in 256-color VGA with Sierra's point-and-click design. IMO it was the weakest of the series, but still had a good story and the added bonus of being able to play as the Paladin (my favorite character class, ESPECIALLY as I find the QfG Paladin the truest definition of what a Paladin SHOULD be. Frell you, AD&D). This is where the series begins getting a little darker.

I'm of mixed feelings about Quest for Glory IV. It was buggy out of the box (this was right when Sierra's quality began going downhill) and I hated the combat system. But of all the games in the series, I think IV had the best story. This is the darkest and most tragic game of the series, and one of the first games I played where the main character suffers a REAL and truly personal loss. Katrina may be the most interesting and complex character in the series.
I deliberately leave Quest for Glory V off this list. It was buggy, (patch #2 was released ONLY to fix a problem patch #1 added) rushed, features that were promised were cut, and much of it departed WAY too far from the mechanics of the first four games and in ways that were NOT for the better. Additionally, despite its release date it was horribly dated visually. QfG5 was a direct victim of the changes being made at Sierra after being bought out by Vivendi, and IMO it shows. It DID have a good story, and GREAT music and voice-acting, but is otherwise forgettable.
Oh come on. There was nothing NOT to like about X-wing. TIE fighter was a worthy successor, XvT had so-so multiplayer, and XWA was just poorly executed. This was the best of the series.
Best. Air. Combat. Sim. EVER.
Especially playing with Bearcats, F2Gs, P-80s, Shindens and Kikka jets in WWII: 1946. :D
I could name a couple others: Half-Life 1 and 2, and Jedi Knight among others, but I want to leave some room for the rest of you all. Besides, these are my top picks.

Will Aces run on XP or Vista? I mean if it was the best...

Nothing says classic like Leisure Suit Larry. All real men have played one of Al Lowe's games at some point in their life

Chalenge,
You'll probably need to adjust the compatibility mode settings, or maybe using a DOS box or Microsoft VirtualPC to create a Win98 machine would work, too.

Yeah, I'm older than dirt.
-
I still need to find a torrent of XvT. I've been playing the Demo version for 6 years.
-
X-wing vs. TIE Fighter is only good for multiplayer. The single-player game is rudimentary at best (think the old Aces High 8-player, only flown entirely offline against drones). Balance of Power added a modestly enjoyable campaign, but it still was of no comparison to what you had in the original X-wing and TIE Fighter.
Granted, once the modding community figured out how to add completely new ships flying the E-wing was a blast. The one I did for X-wing: Alliance is still out there, too. She's like the 4-Hog of the Star Wars Universe.
Screw you, Essential Guide! THIS is what the E-wing is supposed to look like!
:D
I WILL give that to X-wing: Alliance. Despite the technology limitations, and the fact LucasArts was INCREDIBLY paranoid about fan-based modding communities, you could make some pretty nice-looking ships (check out xwaupgrade.com, they're still in business, tho I rarely pop in anymore).

PTO for SNES
(http://www.consoleclassix.com/info_img/Pacific_Theater_of_Operations_SNES_ScreenShot1.jpg)
PTO 2 for SNES and PC (still play the PC version every so often - needs to run in 256 colors!)
I loved these games so much, even though there weren't very popular (in the US). I got my handle 'Fulmar' from these games.

PTO IV for PS2 was GREAT!!! I used to rent it and play it all the time. Ive been looking for something similar ever since, but the closest I can get, Pacific Storm: Allies, barely runs on my computer.

Don't forget fighter duel, one of the best sims out there. Everything during that time (486 33) looked a heck of a lot worse. Check out the gauges, still look nice after all this time.

If the PTO is the one where you fought a strategic level game with the Japanese or Americans then yes I loved the PTO series and the X-Wing/Tie Fighter series as well.
My all time favorites though are as follows in no particular order:
Delta Force (first and second one)
Rainbow Six
X-Com 1 & 2
Chopper Command
Zaxxon (arcade I know but still one of the greats)
EAW
AoP (Aces of the Pacific)
I have more I just don't have time to look up photos from work.

Cracking strategy game. Shame the sequal was so badly done.

Heyya, did you play Fighter Duel on Kali or Khan ? My nick fd-ski dates back to days when one would put the game they played before nickname on Kali :)
(fd - Fighter Duel).

I never played IV, but from what I read it was a more simplistic version than 1 and 2 and emphasized more on the actual battle scenes.

Yeah it was. Diplomacy + Fleet and ground action. The fleet action wasn't anything complicated and I rarely played out those simulations.

The Commodore 64 had some of the greatest games ever designed.
One of the first and best multiplayer games:

Battlechess on steroids. Brilliant:

Yeah, IV was rather simplistic, but it was still better than anything else like it and the graphics were great. If you enjoyed that, I suggest Pacific Storm: Allies. I have a copy, and it really is great, the only thing is you need a higher-end machine to play it. You have to deal with deplomacy, developing technology, creating supply routes for your bases... its really addicting. I play it for weeks building up a massive fleet... and then when I get to the battle and my computer lags because it cannot handle the graphics, I walk away :(

Which one is that? Fate of Atlantis or Last Crusade? Fate of Atlantis rocked. They should have based the new Indy movie off of that. :p

It was the one before Atlantis, the one with the fight against "Biff the Nazi" :lol, I think it was about the grail.

My first flight sim.
Hellcat Ace from Microprose in 1984.
I had an Atari 800 PC with a casstte drive. It took about 15-20 minutes for the game to load.
I also had Battle of Midway from SSI.
I upgraded to an C-64 in 1986 some games for it I liked were.
F19 Stealth Fighter
Mig Alley Ace
AH-64
Ultima
Wizards Quest
Plus some of the SSI war games.
When I got a 286 PC
I had Battlehawks 1942 and Their Finest Hour as my favorites.
386 Upgrade.
Aces over the Pacific
Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe
Aces Over Europe
Red Baron.
Then I got a 486 and found Red baron Online, followed closely by Air Warrior.
Since then most of my computer gaming has been computer upgrades when needed to play Air Warrior, Warbirds, or Aces High.

That would be Last Crusade, based on the movie.

i wonder if HTC was inspired by this game...
Even though it's graphics are quite old it has a 'look and feel' similar to Warbirds and Aces High...

I loved mixing eras in Chuck Yeager. P-51 vs. F-4, anyone? ;)

This was a bit of an under-rated one that got a bit unfairly compared with Tomb Raider:
But even better than the game was the model they used for the promotional material.

:O
This was a VERY hard game, but WELL worth it if you could figure out its controls:

Cutie  I bet she couldn't even stumble 10 paces, even draging her sword, not even talking about fighting something. Ahhh ... videogames and movies, where skiny hot chicks can fight like UFC guys.

Point of order: A longsword (REAL longsword: two-handed, 36-40" blade) was only about 2-3lbs. I'll give you that the 30lbs of mail may be a bit much for her, (with the way plate wears I'd give her the benefit of the doubt) but I have no doubt a girl like that could handle the sword with no trouble.

I still play X-Wing vs TIE, X-Wing Alliance, and the original Silent Hunter. It's not that Silent Hunter is particularly great, I just cannot afford new games, lol.

Woot!
I found a website(seems legit) that has many of the old Dos games. You need to download dosbox to run them.I got Their Finest Hour last night...gonna see if I can get it working sometime this weekend. If anybody wants the link,PM me.

Used to play F-19 a lot, sneaking up the Kola peninsula or delivering/retrieving top secret cargo in the Persian Gulf. :D
1942 was also a great pacific game. Air War Over Europe anyone? Carrier Command was also fun!
Check this out... man it's a long time ago!

Have one of those sitting behind me. There's a cassette drive, but I don't have any cassettes other than the original 50 states one.
Play a lot of the old arcade games on it. :)

Maybe because they aren't moving? :lol
Btw I used to play F16 a lot on the Sega Master System (8-bit), back in the day.
And yeah... I considered myself a hot stick because I was shooting down the enemy in droves, in Air War over Europe on PC I think it was the early 90's. That self-image lasted about 2 minutes online. :rofl Looking back at it it was real funny but I wasn't laughing at the time! :lol
-
in Air War over Europe on PC I think it was the early 90's.
Do you mean European Air War?
I don't think it was quite as good as Pacific Air War.
-
Yeah, European Air War that's it! It was on like, 3 or 4 floppys lol! Gotta love the old pixel days.
Day of the Tentacle, anyone? :D
-
some games i used to love on my zx spectrum 48k :) (these images are better than what they were on the speccy)
rampage I used to love playing this with my brothers, what can possibley be more fun than smashing buildings, cars, helicopters and eating people.
gauntlet I used to love this, i can't remember if i could play this with my brothers or not. You could be a barbarian, an elf, a wizard or a woman- how original :lol
(http://www.virginmedia.com/images/gauntlet.jpg)
IK+ i loved doing the splits and punching people in the crotch or being in the middle, jumping up and kicking both opponents in the face. This was a fantastic game to play against my brothers.
paperboy throwing papers whilst dodging everyday hazards- sounds boring, but it really wasn't.
ghostbusters An awesome game, as long as you don't cross the beams!!! If you did your guys would fall over and then get slimed by the ghost. :(
(http://galaxy22.dyndns.org/dtv/hummer/games/ghostbusters.gif)
Goldenaxe Be a dwarf, barbarian or a woman and kill bad guys- great fun when playing with a friend. You could even ride weird creatures that kill bad guys by swinging their tail. I didn't own this but played it on my friend's C64 all the time.
North and South I used to play this against a friend all the time, i was always confederates. The campaign map was very much like the total war series, moving armies to control states. If you had 2 opposing armies in the same state a battle would ensue (in fact the more i think about it the greater the similarity to the total war series there is). You could also rob enemy trains and banks to fund the war effort. :D I think this was my favourite game of all time as a kid.

LMAO Shifty! I had the same machines, same games almost exactly! Check the graphics in those grand, yet pixellated days! Ahh, memories.....

The joy of cassettes.
I don't think kids nowadays can understand the frustration and anguish of waiting anywhere up to 45 mins for a game to load, with those god awful loading sounds with lines streaking down the screen. Only for the tape to finish, the play button making a distinctive sound as it flicks up making you recognise the game hasn't sodding loaded. :lol
Nowadays i get annoyed waiting 5 secs because i cant skip a loading screen.

I hate RPGs and still do.
This is the only good RPG.

You sure you dont' mean Aces over Europe? That was a pretty good one :)
My faves- F-19 (a MUST play- GAWD that game was cool), the Falcon series is awesome, on the Atari I played F-15 Strike Eagle at 8 years old under my dad's guidance :)
other games of note, by platform-
Atari 2600/XL-
MiG Alley Ace
Pole Position
Bruce Lee
Space Patrol (I think- the one with front view/rear view, shooting glowing orbs at bad guys)
Moon Patrol
Zaxxon
Galaga
Pac-man
Then I got a state-of-the-art Zeos 386 with TURBO! :O
Aces over Europe
Their Finest Hour
Battlehawks 1942
Falcon AT
F-19
Doom
Quake
Wing Commander (various versions)
Then came the 486Dx2!
EF-2000 was a BIG one I remember playing on it. I LOVED that game
Secret Weapons Of The Luftwaffe (SWOTL- a MUST for any serious simmer geek)
X-wing and Tie fighter- These games kicked bellybutton on biblical levels.
Modern era- what I'm playing these days
Medieval 2 Total War with the Stainless Steel 6.2 mod
Aces High
LOMAC
FreeFalcon
Silent Hunter IV: Wolves of the Pacific
Lego Star Wars
Just off the top of my head :)
-
Aces over Europe, could be it... my mind fail me on that one.
Today I have many more games than I have time to play... :(

FD - Squirrel / AW - Sqrl

I apologize if some people do not want this thead revived, but to keep it all in one thread for future reference I will post here. :)

Made a film, in three parts, of the 'Close Combat The Longest Day' title. It will show you what this game is all about, or at least try to.
- First part shows the unit selection screen where you select (up to 15) units that will form the combat group under your command for the ensuing battle. Here you can also track progress of each individual soldier, medals, experience etc.
- Second part shows the actual combat.
- Third part is second and last part of the combat.
Part 0 (http://www.mediafire.com/?2n1wmbjz2yi) - 4.35 MB
Part 1 (http://www.mediafire.com/?tdmnqvtzmw0) - 185.84 MB
Part 2 (http://www.mediafire.com/?zjty1kjnymh) - 89.29 MB
It is a classic that has been polished up and made available at Matrix Games. What I like about the game is that it's true to life in a tactical sense and the weapons range and effects are very realistic. So despite the fact it all being 2D sprites and the sound is crap by today's standards, it is very enjoyable. Especially fun when playing a human opponent. Some of the most enjoyable moments are the rare cases when a infantry squad is mowed down and there's one survivor and you think he's going to leg it but no, not this guy, he go berserk and assault the enemy. I've seen a single soldier take out a whole MG team in hand-to-hand combat melee this way and it's hilarious. At least when you watch it as sprites in a computer game. :D
This game is great in MP and the system requirements are very mellow by today's standards. The downside is you can only play 2 ppl in MP, but if you can talk to eachother through TS it makes for a good conversation and lots of laughs. :)

Descent made me totally sick from the graphics' motion.
Wipeout 2097 was insanely beautiful. Graphics, atmosphere, ship designs, music.. Playing it after getting it for christmas in the living room with the lights dimmed out and the music at full blast on the 500W speakers while it snowed outside..
I remember Golden Axe mostly at the arcade along with Street Fighter. My parents refused to let me have them after I brought home Double Dragon 2 bought with lunch money, because of how violent and overall gaudy they were. I did get to play .. Ghosts n Goblins a lot. That was a ton of fun. The graphics at the time were hypnotically rich. Those Contra sidescroller games were a lot of fun too. R-Type was a lot of fun, in the same vein. Later on I got to play Gradius while stuck in bed with terrible case of tonsilitis. I lost a bunch of times, and one day I just picked up the controller and went past the whole first half without really thinking about it, and pwnt the rest of the game sort of "in the zone", my hands acting on their own.
I totally tripped out on the atmosphere in Altered Space. One guy marooned in the infinite void of space, having to isometrically tip toe and puzzle-solve his way thru a huge alien ship with all sorts of weird deadly aliens and shapes, with a sound track to match. Marble Madness was equally trippy and challenging.
The Wing Commander with the full motion video scenes was epic. A friend of mine had bought the full collector's version. It came inside this movie reel box.
Around the same time, we played Another World a lot. The minimalistic design was really good. Boiled things down to the essentials of story telling. I never got time to play with Flashback when it came out. Prince of Persia was fun but didn't have much novelty after playing thru Another World, Contra, and G&G.

UFO Enemy Unknown is the greatest game ever made and it's from 1993 or 1994.
-
X-Com UFO defense was my favorite. They re-made it for all intents and purposes, but it's just not the same...

Descent made me totally sick from the graphics' motion...
Same here! I don't know what was up with that game... it was the only game I ever suffered motion sickness and headaches from.
-
Descent is the ultimate 3D game concept. :D D1 and D2 is still fairly simple because of the block construction of levels. I made quite a few levels with the level editor and loved it. D3 is more complex with the newer graphics but if you want to train spatial perception Descent is probably the best game you an find for that.
-
Yeah it was revolutionary for sure, but the graphics had something about them that made your head spin as much as the ship.. It and (for some reason) Quake 2 gave me the most atrocious headaches to the point of nausea if I played more than about half an hour at a time.
-
It could be a combination of the low res graphics of the time, the bobbing up and down motion of the ship, and contrast levels of textures and crappy lighting effects. Dunno, but I can imagine all of the above do make a difference.
-
I reinstalled Gangsters the other day. Game is still awesomely fun. Nothing like the cops rocking up outside of your Gangster HQ and gunning down 20 of your guys while they innocently go around offering protection to business owners.
-
I think so, Vortex. Those old Windows screensavers where you're robot-walking thru a square 3D labyrinth give a similar effect.

MechWarrior 2, the first truly immersive and addictive game in the line.

And its (still the best in the series IMO) sequel, MechWarrior 3. Late '90s game and still looks and plays better than the new editions if you ask me.

I'm suddenly reminded of Sierra's mech games. Earthsiege and Earthsiege 2.
-
I'm reminded of my old PS1 demo CD of Armored Core that I adored but never bought the game for. I'm still curious about that game.
-
Ah, FD on kali those were the days.. what a great furballing sim with pretty good flight models to boot. Took flight sim'ing to a whole new level for me in the days before AW went flat rate.
FD - Squirrel / AW - Sqrl
It scares me to think that was 14 years ago :) Sure lot of time ago.
Feen is around here sometimes too. I saw Silvereagle in WB couple of time but i don't think he stuck around.

I remember playing Star Wars Podracer and Rogue Squadron, and was totally impressed by how amazing the graphics were. Granted, this was on December 26, after staying awake twenty four hours and that I was six-ish at the time. My favorite game of all time though would be BattleMech on the Genesis. I got it when I was eight on my birthday, which was three days before Christmas, and playing Co-op with my cousin. We almost made it past the second level. :rock

Horrible, horrible, horrible game.

Give me things like Close Combat.

To each his own, but all of our own seems to variations on death and destruction, whether it be in ancient times or with giant robots. Maybe we have issues.
Or maybe we just prefer to get our aggressions out by killing cartoon people instead of getting whumped for doing the real thing. :)

I really enjoyed Ultima Underworld.

I played all of the Close Combat series, but the moded "A Bridge Too Far" was by far the best.
I also played the MW4 Mercs in the NBT league for years, too. When I stopped playing, they has taken the original 30-some mechs and were at over 100. They didnt even have the source code for it, either.

I started this project...god...got to be TEN YEARS AGO! I'm no longer actually active in it, but periodically drop in to take a look. If only LucasArts had the commitment these guys have.

MechWarrior 2, the first truly immersive and addictive game in the line.
I used to own at MW2, it supported my VFX-1 VR Headset, full headtracking and stereo 3D support. Drive the chassis with stick and throttle, turn and target the upper torso with head movements.
Now one game I really miss:

Ah, the memories.
Pokemon started my addiction with video games.
Man, that was such a good, scratch that, GREAT game, and actually got better with each sequal.
Heck, I still play Silver/Gold every once in a while despite its obvious age.
Ah, those were the good ole' days.

I had a Commodore 128 and my fav. games where Strike Fleet and Gettysburg.
Anyone play a board game called Adv. Squad leader? :aok

now that was so much fun. double points for running down a woman with a child, The trash can bonus "DRUGS" which made the screen go psychedelic for 30 seconds
-
Yup, the carmagedon games rocked.
-
Man those are some blasts from the past. Havent seen any UT in there ( UNreal Tournament 2 ) the Mods made the game. Especially Infiltration.
