Google has it listed as an emergency field and for ten months of the year (if flight sim has it right) the runway is a mix of snow ice and black ice and there is a amphibian facility too. In case you cant tell it is a regular stop for me when I sim around the globe.

Back in the spring of '86 we were chasing Russian boomers up that way.  The weather is pretty entertaining.  Two years befor ehtat we were 12 miles off the coast of Kamchatka.  That was even more entertaining.

I'm talking next season.  :aok

I'd be doing halibut in the fall and then Browns/Kings in sept/oct/possibly part of Nov.
Opillio's (snow crab) are done in January but I'd come back down here for our season.
I'm in Oregon. We do dungeness, some halibut, blackcod, Albacore, and Humboldt Squid!

Clearly you gents aren't WW2 buffs :)

I saw Dutch Harbor and immediately thought 54th FS P38s along with the rest of the 11th AF.

There's a 38E that was ditched in Massacre Bay if you happened to get that direction.

Thats Casco Cove which is another fuel stop along the way before Kamchatka.  It can be a tricky approach along the north ridge if you arent ready for it. :aok'

You got coords on the 38?

If it were me ... I'd be looking to sail with Capt. Sig Hansen on the F/V Northwestern ... those guys bust their balls like no other, and seem to always bring home the big bucks. Sig has a knack for finding the crab.

I am also a huge fan of "The Deadliest Catch".

<----- fan of the show too.

Not only does Sig's crew seem to bring home the most cash, they just seem like cool guys too, lol.

Absolutely :aok

I recall a thread a while back where we theorized about what Sig, Edgar, @ crew would do if challenged by those PETA morons. The possibilities are endless. :D

Heh..well...they're definitely entertainers. It's an amusing show.  :D
The boat I'm hoping to get on has about twice the quota share of the Northwestern.  But if they step out of the camera spotlight one morning in port, this deck monkey would probably pay for the round of coffees...  :aok

Hey!  Our Squid Steaks our Humboldts!
We slice them, dredge 'em in butter milk and tempura flour and fry 'em...
Good stuff...  How do you catch 'em?  Jigging?
The stuff we have comes from Mexico which are all caught on jigs..

Not positive how far out he was.  The pilot, John Geddes, got pulled out by a Kingfisher crew.  There is another one that ditched 300 feet off "Rat" Island, trying to rtb to Kiska after strafing North Head.  "Spider" Livesay got out of the plane but died trying to reach shore.

That's very cool Scotch :aok Must be tremendously hard work and much fun to think about once each trip is finished. :)

If you aren't referring to alcohol, that's probably impossible. :D Even if you are, probably pretty close to impossible.

Let me clarify.. out on the Bering Sea, there's damp and then there's dead. Stay damp Scotch. :aok

Yeah jig fishing. They're kind of creepy. Aggressive and big! They taste good though  :devil
But ours all go to the bait market.

I'll hopefully know in the next couple months what my chances are to get on that crew. It's still pretty early. But I'm definitely looking for a waterproof way to take some pictures of the fishing we do out here at least. Some of the sights we get to see are pretty amazing!  :aok
