There were 20 defenders assigned to the VBase and 35 to both airfields so 90 for defense. Put 50 in for the required fighter sweeps, 30 for B-25s, 12 for B-24s, 20 SBDs, and 70 Escorts and you have where the rest were assigned. I would be interested in how many Japanese were assigned to defense as we saw very few over Bougainville.

We tangled with parts of at least three different squadrons (VFA-169, 412th and 357th for a total of 28) during the escort run on 18 with all but two of our claims (my wingman and I tangled with a couple chasing some friendlies home near A11 at the end of the frame) coming over Bougainville. Your guys really tore them up as well with 25 victories, were most of those after getting clear?

332nd Rolled from A16 and flew about 5 sectors right down the Slot in Ki-67’s. Twenty two minutes into the frame I discoed. :( I went into gunner mode for some squadies.
My guys dropped on V38 and took out all the hangers. We continued to A37 and everyone was calibrating and about to drop when they were surprised by P40’s and P-38’s. Several of the bombers were moments from dropping when they heard the hits on their aircraft. We lost quite a few bombers due to the perfect timing of the enemy P40’s and P-38’s. We did very light damage to A37. Some bombers returned to base, but many were lost.
