I received a text message naming my bank and saying my visa card showed unusual activity. What were they trying to do? Get my account #? I called the number and it didn't go through. I didn't send text. That was before I though it out. I called my bank and they knew nothing about it. It does make you nervous though when they have your bank name and cell number.

When was the last time you ran a credit report?

Text them back and tell them you have had that problem in the past. That in the last three years you have had to kill 2 individuals that you tracked down using your card number. Then ask them what their name is so you can contact them in the future to help you track other possible crooks.

Just ran it. Looks good. No activity other than the usual.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Go with it, get their contact info, then run to your bank and show it to them. Your bank will probably report it to their "special ops team"

Is it one of the big 5 banks everywhere in the country? If it's a large bank I wouldn't worry about it, they could of just been shooting in the dark. But if your bank is one of only a few branches (or less) then I would be very concerned and maybe even go as far as notifying the authorities.

The last year or so I have gotten a few of those text messages, except it was the wrong bank.... Until the last one I got, hit it right on... I called my local branch (not the texted phone number) and gave them the information.

recently had my account info stolen online when my stepson used it.Ran up 2k worth of stuff fore they shut it down.Idiots bought tangible good and gave a mailing address so fraud dept nailed em.Was not held accountable but cost me a bunch of grief. They tried to run it while I was in the bank trying to fix the problem

If you have the number of that text. Contact the FBI. they will trace the message.

Now that google is going to allow tracing cell phones online I bet a few cons get wacked.

You have a link to a report or announcement? I'd love to know when this happens...

Had a friend here in Hawaii have her credit card stolen. She was reporting it at the bank and it just so happened the crook was charging her card while she was there. The bank told her at exactly which store the card was being used, so she called the police and gave them the information. They refused to follow up. It wasn't worth the effort, apparently, of driving to a store to pick up a guy they already had evidence and a location on.

I was late on a recent Amex payment. So I get this called, "XYZ from Amex here, need to speak to you about your card". So I say sure. Then she says "we need to ask you some personal details to confirm your identity". I say no. She says huh? I say no - you called on a no caller ID number, I have no idea who you are, so I refuse to give you confidential information. She then proceeds to tell what its about anyway LOL.
Seriously, banks/card companies need to tidy up their act.

Don't rely on caller ID either. An old buddy I used to work with did a presentation on how to hack it and make it come up with any information you wish, so it could have said "American Express" and it may have been an attempt at Identity Theft.
The briefing on it is here: http://www.blackhat.com/presentations/bh-usa-06/BH-US-06-Schulman.pdf
