Title: Video question
Post by: noTch on February 05, 2009, 10:10:46 AM
Was doing some experimenting and watching CTRL-I info.  One thing I noticed was that no matter what I did, IE. turn down detail range, reset video from 512 texture, disabled other players skins, I can't get the the FPS above 60. Is there a limiter on somewhere?

Something else that is strange is that I have 256 mb video card and 2 gb memory. On the CTRL-I, on the video side, 80 to maybe 95 mb in a furball & doesn't seem like the memory used was ever over 500 mb to 800 mb.  This all seems like a waste.

The question is, How do ya get the game to use all the resources available?

As far as frame rate no going over 60...you probably have V-Sync forced on.  I have my v-sync forced on to match my monitor refresh rate and it is usually between 58 and 60.  Sometimes if you don't force v-sync, you get weird video things like "rubber bullet syndrome" or "tearing" of the video display.

For the memory question, I don't know.

You absolutely want v-sync ENABLED for Aces High II.

Thank you for answering :)

Alright, then with that said, is 60 fps the best I can expect?  What about the video card memory?

if that is what your monitor refresh rate is set at, 60 is the best your going to get.

The memory listing in AH is what is reported from your card thru windows. The video card manufacturers are not exactly honest when it come to reporting the numbers so you really can't go by the numbers you see on the screen.

Been said that the video card memory does not report the correct mem usage to applications such as AH.

Also, since you have 2GB, you can enable the option to "preload SKINS" into memory.  Also preload "textures" if you haven't done so already.  After you do this in your video settings, each time you enter an arena, it can take a minute to load.  Once you enter the arenas, any stutters you may have had, are reduced drastically.  This allows you to use more of your system memory Notch.

Besides "rubber bullet" and tearing (which I have never gotten and have never used Vsync), why is it important to run AH with V-sync?
I know what V-sync does..  However, I never get any anomalies when I don't run it..  Does it do anything other than keep the refresh rate
constant with the frame rate(as far as Aces High is concern)?
Thank you in advance....

Regards

If your system is capable of running at 75 on the refresh rate bump it up and AH will run at 75 FPS. The key is your system. 60 or 75 makes little difference. The human eye can only see 30FPS. The key is the drop in frame rate. If you see little drop at 60 on your refresh rate your good to go. Some who have old systems drop all over depending on high graphic areas and lots planes in furball areas.

No, the human eye can definitely see things faster than 30 Fps. I know I can tell the difference between 30 and 60 Fps, which means I see at a faster rate than 30.

30 fps is the best the human eye can see, however if your screen has a 10ms refresh rate you will notice a difference.

60fps approx is best human eye can see, but 30-40 is avg.
