Title: 205 guns
Post by: Dragon on February 06, 2009, 09:36:53 AM
I normally don't fly in the 205 but tried a few sorties last night and had some serious trouble with the guns.  I was having a great fight with a F4U but just could not get the guns to hit target.  Had I been in my normal JUG, I know I would have shredded the nmy plane, but try after try of deflection shots, on his 6 shots and even several HO passes, I only managed to get 1 hit sprite in like 7 min or so.  I don't have film and I finally did get the kill with some shots on his 6 from 200 out and landed with 10 bullets left.  Guns converge @ 425.  Am I missing something, can the ballistics be that different?

Thanks

Sometimes dead 6 shots are the hardest to get hits. Try putting your conv. a little closer in.

Yes, the difference in ballistics is significant enough to be a challenge for someone used to the .50 cal browning armament.  The MG 151 muzzle velocity is ~ 755m/s, the browning is ~ 880m/s, so the muzzle velocity of the browning is nearly 17% greater.

My advice is to set your convergence closer and work for closer shots to get the hang of the ballistics.  Don't get discouraged.  It seems some people only stay with browning/hizooka armed aircraft because of the reluctance to retrain their eye.

With this Net code where planes are twitchy and flutter on your screen instead of moving in nice smooth motions, can be hard to hit with anything

cept for the guys behind me, dont seem to miss,  :noid

That's an effect of aircraft that roll well, especially the 190 and Spitfire16.

At best a combination  , this games generous support for 56k shows itself

Actually, dial-up probably isn't the problem, it may be a touch slower, but is generally more stable than some DSL and cable connections.

Thanks.  :aok I tried adjusting but just couldn't get it quite right last night.  Looks like I know what I'll be doing tonight.  :)

[hijack]I know of dial-up users who have very smooth connections.  56k is more than sufficient for this type of gameplay.  What you're seeing is people who simply jam the stick around when you get on their 6.[/hijack]

I currently fly in 3 different online flight sims, each with excellent rolling aircraft and 'stick stirrers' , and in handling the tracking of this type of movement I rank this one last. Certainly not in all aspects, but in this one for sure.

My opinion based on observations. Yours I'm sure will be different, but doesn't change mine.

Dial-up runs this game very well. When I tell people I fly with dial-up they are very supprized. My ping is around 200 and the only times I have problems with my connection is when my virus/ spyware scanners start up.

To dragon,

I have the same problem when switching between my p38 and LW planes. 50cals fly a lot straighter then the Mg151s, so when taking lead shots lead a little more, and when you are on their six aim above and let the bullets drop onto them.

After flying the 205 alot I usually fire infront of enemy plane when I switch to the F4u.  I use 300 or 275 from the cannons on the 205.  The MG i set further out i think 400...not sure on that one.

Set 300 for cannons and try to hit from under this distance
Set MG to 400-450

You have to familiarize to the typical 205's nose bouncing, that makes aiming more difficult.

Thanks guys.
If you like the 205, you might try your luck in the Ki61. I personally think they fly alike, but the Ki has 20mms in the nose and they are deadly.

I disagree, their strengths are different. Yes the Ki-61 cannons are somewhat more deadly than those of the 205, but you run out of them way faster than in the 205 - you need to be accurate, spray and pray does not work like in the Macchi.  In the Ki, I almost always have to RTB because I run out of ammo (even with only 50% fuel taken) before I have to get some fuel. In the 205, its exactly the opposite.

Coming from a 205 the Ki feels slow and lazy, but it's handling in low to medium speeds is much better. You can afford to stay in the fight longer, but if you need to bug out, the Ki suffers compared to the 205, it just cannot extend quickly enough.

I really like them both, but I feel they are very different beasts that require different approaches for success
