AI SBs and 8"/5" guns
For the umpteenth billion time we had a CV parked so close to a friendly field I have NO IDEA how the waypoints were even set (without "waypoint touches land" errors) and dweebs in the 5" were just screwing around vulching the runway from their gun positions.
I want shore batters to AUTOMATICALLY track and fire on ANY enemy cv in their range (order of target acquisition: CV, cruiser, escorts). Give it a random dispersion spread, sure, but make it a major threat to CVs parked offshore of other fields.
Following this logic, put the same AI code in the 8" and 5" guns on fleets, so that they fire on enemy fleets they are sent head-long into.
This behavior is retarded mentally and disruptive to good gameplay.
These things are NOT landing boats!!! They DO NOT land on the shore for you to walk off!!!
Park them where they should be, SAFE DISTANCES AWAY, and fly in like real aircraft have to from CVs.
This is a way better idea than my alternative idea: NEver allow user-controled CVs, ever.
You can still have your CV, just know if you do something stupid it'll get sunk and pretty fast by the AI SBs, or other fleets you drive it through on purpose.

We can't even get AI CV puffy smart enough to track that formation of torpedo-laden Ju88s coming at instead of a high, clean fighter, what makes you think we'll get this? :D

What about troops ? You need to get close for lvts to spawn along the shore...Not to mention that you can kill SB's with a couple of attackers.
-
You can then sink the CV with tanks :devil
Anyway, a number of smaller (faster firing) batteries might solve this? 4-6 inch guns? Perhaps tucked where it's hard to see & hit them? Would be like the first wave at Wake island :devil
-
The real solution would be, to give us Amphibious invasion fleets...
So carriers won't be forced to sit 1000yds offshore...
A working Hvy Artillery model for the GV scene.. 8inch Howitzers..
So you can shell the ships even after they find the blind spot
between the shore batts...
A single destroyer, that spawns and operates like a PT boat..
So 5inch gunners will have something to do besides ackvulchin
the runway.. Fubuki class, OH YEAH!!!
Just some ideas

Or torpedo batteries. They should have like 4 torps that need a long reload time. Their range is already pretty short so they wont be able to touch a cv that is at a proper distance.
-
:huh  :uhoh
If your not high or drunk I'm vary positive every CV will Die b4 we ever get close to LVT spawn range....
Because even if you had this how would LVT's spawn.... Well the CV would be in SB gun range.
I dint like ships close to the shore eather but you cant honestly expect HTC to make the SB's unmanned and AI....
I feel dumber just for reading this.

no it happens a lot of times
i have seen lvt spawn on land a few times

About the troops...
You do not need the cv parked on the shore to spawn troops close. LVT's spawn in nearly the same place if the CV is 5 miles or 25 miles off shore. Only when its really close do you get 'feet dry' spawns.
I'll say it again, the CV DOES NOT NEED TO BE NEAR THE SHORE TO SPAWN LVT'S. Keep it 20 miles away and chances are LVT's will spawn in roughly the same place.
About the shore batteries...
For guys who play with lower performing computers like myself, we normally fly around with ground range to the shortest level. Anything larger drastically adds lag, especially around a furballing base. Finding SB's now is nearly impossible, finding multiple auto SB's in the future would just suck. I'm not sure if more SB's is the answer.
I agree with Krusty though, bringing the CV to the shore is not historically accurate, is gamy, and takes away from the experience on both sides. There needs to be a way to punish people who treat CV's like amphibious invasion fleets.

This is not true. It's urban legend. Most recent confirmation:
Cozying a CV to a town is also needless. Try it offline. Jump a CV to 30K from a town. Spawn an LWT2. Try it at 15K from town. Try it at 5K.
When I tried it at 16K moments ago, LWT2 spawned at same distace from town as when I was snuggled close to town.
For fun, pop into a SB at those distances to gauge effectiveness of SB fire.
Pretty revealing, eh?
BTW, Widewing years ago wrote a very fine essay on CV ops. What I detail here, he took the time to find out a long time ago.
It has been tested many times.

Hammer

Or torpedo batteries.
Like the one in the Oslofjorden? ;)
-
I didn't mean that the lvts spawn closer of the town is the cv is closer, its just that 16K is still in SB range.
The lvts spawn points draw a circle around the maproom, with the lvts spawning on the circle exactly between the room and the cv. To have the lvts spawning feet dry you need to find a point on that circle that is on land and is accessible by positioning the CV in the right place. The system is quite easy to exploit in case of a port where you can put the cv behind the port and spawn lvts directly on the field and ressup it instantly to repair the ack, making the port basicly invincible....which is BS of course.
-
I say "NO" to the whole idea....CVs make for great fights to enter my Hurricane Mk I in :aok
-
I think that SB's should stay the same, but if a CV is in range, and no one is manning it, it should go on "auto fire". Someone is welcome to hop in the SB and use it, thus "kicking the AI out". When the user leaves the SB, the AI can continue it's duty.
-
That leads to the same problem we have now, where one squad just has a "friend" sit in the SB and do nothing for an hour while they do what they want.

Another piece of world war two history I never knew about
Blücher sunk by torps from here,,,

SB's can hit CV at 22k yards+. I have done it. If u make the SB auto/AI controlled, u need to limit it to 10k-12k yards or closer. LVT range I believe is 15k +/- yards from town to spawn. LVT won't spawn to town at 20K yards out.

Far too many times have I tried to enter a shore battery to repel a fleet, only to find it is occupied, and inexplicably NOT firing at the CV RIGHT under it's nose... :noid

Hehe yeah like them :)

Perhaps Shore Batteries should be controlled the same as CVs...the better your individual AH rank...the more can boot out of the position.
Just a thought....
