Title: strange problem
Post by: james on February 07, 2009, 09:30:07 PM
Hopefully some of you guys can help out here. I'll be on the game and flying around doing my thing when the wife opens her lap top from hell and connects to the internet poof i get discoed from the game. This is a bit more than an occasional happening now. What can i post here that you guys can take a look at about my system that might help out? I get all the way up to the alt and into the fight and host connection lost as soon as she connects. Anyone else get this problem?

do you have a router, or does she connect through your computer?

My wife sometimes uses her laptop when I fly and I do not disconnect, nor do I hear complaints of warping.

Of course im sharing the bandwidth, theres a couple of them in the house. I only get logged off when my wifes laptop connects to the internet. Every other computer connected to the internet in the house is fine. I can play and get the same performance with them on or off. I get host connection loss when her laptop kicks on. I don't get how this happens. Is there maybe a port on the router i need to open for her laptop or something else I can do? There's a total of 6 computers in the house itself.  3 laptops and 3 desktops. 1 laptop is causing the problems. Unfortunately it's her favorite out of all the darn pc power we have.

Do most routers allow you to cap bandwidth used by any particular pc? You don't need anything like high-speed to play this game (dial-up works fine) but it DOES need to be consistent

The next time your wife leaves the house, put the laptop out front by the street with a "FREE" sign next to it.

I have 3 wired and and one wireless on my router with no trouble. When the kids get home from college and bring friends, I've had up to 10 computers running on the same router with out troubles.

It sounds to me like a setting in her laptop. I'd go through every setting in the networking setups and compare them to a different laptop in the house. You might find it that way, other than that, I'm out of my element.

Update, just talked with IT type son... he suggests looking and making sure the network is set to "obtain IP address automatically" under the network properties. If that is already set like that, he suggests that you remove/delete the network connection in the laptop, then re conect it having find a new address on its own. He thinks the one it has may be in conflict with your computer.

Can't stop laughing about this one. So TRUE!

Right on Fugitive! I'll give this a shot later on this afternoon thanks

Sounds like the latest wife ack tool of terror. You must find and destroy this weapon before it falls into the hands of others :D

Sorry I couldn't be of any assistance

Is your Router assigning Your IP address to Her machine when she logs on ?  Is she set up as a static IP address and rest of your computers are set up as Dynamic?

besides the losing of the IP as suggested above, the laptop sounds like it is taking all the resources of the router. under the wireless settings you should be able to set the MAC address of her laptop to have specific settings every time it connects, including bandwith, IP and other features.

one last possibility is her laptop has some malicious software on it and when connected to the internet it causes traffic problems, including using all the possible bandwidth.

You can try port forwarding.
http://tinyurl.com/ab552 (http://tinyurl.com/ab552)

I use this method along with Static IP,..I used to get booted every 10-20 minutes,...I have been booted twice in the last 2 months. Once was because I removed the static IP, put it back and I'm golden again. <shrug> worth a try and it's very easy. Just get the known ports AH uses from skuzzy.

That's what I was thinking. Some form of software hogging massive amounts of bandwidth. You could try forwarding ports 2000-6000 to your computer's IP Address as Animl suggested, however I'm not certain it will resolve this issue.

You should run a test..

Put her laptop on and connect to the net, then go and turn yours on. If you cannot connect at all then the laptop is the problem, logicaly. If you can connect after her's is set up and running it would suggest something in the start up of the laptop maybe. If having her laptop on only causes occasionaly discos than it is probably virus or spyware.  Other than that i have no idea, i prefer outside activities and only use my PC for games and pr0.....ductive persuits.

Had the same problem at home. usual culprit is an ip address conflict. you have to log in to your router. typical browser address is 192.168.2.1  or 192.168.1.1 and check the ip ranges that are valid. Also check and see what ip addys are being used. You may have to manually assign a different ip address to your computer to avoid conflict in dhcp, as well as port forward the AH2 Application.  it worked for me, running 2 desktops 3 lappies,3 xbox360's and one xbox on belkin router.
