Title: Silent Hunter III
Post by: Ack-Ack on February 10, 2009, 03:29:17 AM
I know this is an old game but for some reason I never picked it up until I saw it at a local computer store for $5.  Which mods are recommended?  Looking for mods that add to the game play as well as some that improve the gaphics.

I went on to SHIV when it was released - but for SHIII I would suggest GWX 3.0 which is a collection of many good mods. Look at subsim.com.
There were many bugs at release, but I think official patches and unofficial mods have nailed most of them. Still, never save a campaign while submerged or close to enemies - in worst case you can't load your savefile again.

Definitely go with GWX (Grey Wolves eXpansion). It completely transforms the ok stock game into a truly great U-boot sim. Happy hunting Herr Kaleun!  :)

SH4 has great graphics, but I'm a lazy man.  I didn't have to sail usually as far to get to some action.  I mean man, the Pacific Ocean really big, even at 8192X time compression.  I use the Trigger Maru expansion (1.63).  It seems to tweak the original pretty good.  It took a long time for the original game makers to fix a lot of simple bugs in the game (mainly repeat missions).

In SH4 I wished the creew would auto this macro "airplane detected - dive to PD 20 min - surface". Countless aircraft interruptions coupled to long distances killed it.

I used to spend time on the old DOS Silent service, and later Aces of the Deep. I enjoyed both, so I am curious how Silent Hunter is in comparison...?

I like SH3 better than SH4, sh4 is just a  series of "aircraft spotted" over and over and over and over  and the german boats are more fun anyway.

There's the expansion for SH4 that lets you do German missions in the Pacific.  And the Trigger Maru mod helps eliminate aircraft problems (though not entirely I've found).

Thanks a lot guys, downloading GWX now.  Got the next couple of days off so I think I'm gonna be burning some time with this game.

I hate the aircraft issues in SH4. Also you can never find the carrier that those Zekes and Vals seem to operating from 2500 miles out in the middle of the ocean near Midway in 1944...

Other than that I like the game and play it about once a week or so.

Didn't one of the SH's have an evil rootkit installation or something? Seem to remember warnings to stay away because the program wrote crap into the system without permission or notification.

Or am I confusing it with a different game?

There is a way to change the parameters of the air encouters in the ini files. I remember that when I had SH4 I disabled aircraft because it was so annoying. Not only the frequency, not also the fact that It came out of time acceleration when the planes were already attacking the sub.

Yep SHIII installs the starforce rootkit.

It's hard enough finding big title games that don't have SecureROM on them.

+1.

SHIII is a fantastic game.  Held my interest for quite some time.

SHIV - about a week.

Make sure you download one of the mods that eliminates crew fatigue when time compression is enabled.  (Sorry, forget all the names of the mods.. its been awhile).

Yep SHIII is a good game I still play it about once a week. I have SH4 but I played it for about three hours and haven't picked it up since.

Is there a way to install this game without it screwing up your system? I read some awful horror stories about what happens to 64-bit Windows during the install process of Starforce.

Is this game with Starforce safe to install on non 64 bit systems?

Your mileage may vary. It's possible to install it and then use starforce remover + no-cd patch. But be warned last time I tried to use the starforce remover it rendered my OS in an unbootable state.

I still play as well.

I haven't updated any mod for the game for quite some time. Using Real Uboat 1.45 here and SH3 Commander.

Currently on Patrol 6. Late April 1940. Contact Report indicated a Task Force operating in the fjords near Trondhiem. In very shallow water I snuck up on three Troop Transports and a Fiji Class Cruiser with escort.

Nearly 3 hours of Real time game play, and I have yet to clear the fjord. Tribal Class DDs are all over my ass. What a mistake going in there was. Only sank one Transport. I am off to head to the Dunkirk evacuation, should be fun times. I love how the mods re-enact real events like Norway, Dunkirk, D-Day and such.

Sorry to Bump this, but the most ironic thing has happened.

After I posted above comments, my game crashed and would not even load. So I deleted it and did a complete re-install and downloaded Grey Wolves Expansion 3.0.

If you have this game, download this Add-on.

It is pretty large, but Die Hard is completely right. If you have this game but it is not installed, prepare to dust it off. It contains a 644 page PDF manual.  :) With all new missions, graphics, gameplay... What a Great Mod.
