Title: Greatest Soundtracks
Post by: Saxman on February 10, 2009, 12:58:54 PM
Here's a variation of the "Greatest Movie Themes" thread. It's easy to say that some movies may have one or two memorable pieces, but the rest isn't much worth listening to. What do you think are the best ENTIRE scores?

In no particular order, I have to say:

The Original Star Wars Trilogy (nothing in the prequels really stands out) - My favorite has to be the choir piece when Luke finally defeats Vader.
Raiders of the Lost Ark and Last Crusade - MANY great tracks in both.
Gettysburg - There's absolutely NO use of choir, but Edelmann's score is so masterfully orchestrated there's entire pieces where the instrumentation makes it SOUND like voices.
The Lord of the Rings - Wow. Just wow.

I really liked in Star Wars Episode III the "Anakkin vs Obi-wan" battle music.

But overall I think the theme in the game Halo was the best ever created. I know this is suppose to be about movies but there is rumor is might become a movie.

Not in any particular order:

Rabbit proof fence
1492: Conquest of Paradise
Black Rain
Hotel Rwanda
Days of thunder
Rambo
The Abyss
The fountain
Kingdom of Heaven
Dune
British tv show Terrahawks (amazing :D)

More but can't remember now ;)

I have to disagree with you Selino. The new music in the Prequels was as overblown as the rest of the movies.

Keep in mind, this thread is meant to be about ENTIRE scores not the individual gems in a pile of garbage (which is why I said nothing about Across the Stars, which WAS decent).

croduh,

Thanks for reminding me of Kingdom of Heaven. My main complaint is that while it was beautiful, it was awfully repetitive and there wasn't much variation. I think leitmotifs more along the lines of LotR would have fit it better.

Rocky Horror Picture Show
The Sting

Actually i only like 2 particular songs from the soundtrack.
I usually find 2 or 3 songs that I'll listen on a soundtrack, which i remember during the movie, rest i just put away ;)

The rest of the movie's sountrack is...meh...but the theme song from the 1980s movie Band of the Hand, which was actually a pretty good flick, was done by Bob Dylan and is a great tune.

Aw , does it have to be movies?  I can never find a movie soundtrack that I can stand listening to the entire thing.  Only soundtrack I have found like that so far is for a game, Medal of Honor. :D

However I do like good amounts from movies such as:
Lord of the Rings- Most of it is amazing, but some I just cn't listen to for more than a minute.
Indiana Jones-Something about it jumps fun to listen to,
Star Trek-What can I say, nerds will be nerds.

That's about all I can think of.

If you like ambient and chill music the soundtracks to both Solaris (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0307479/) and Monster (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0340855/) are real good.

Road To Perdition (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0257044/) is great.

Dazed and Confused (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106677/) is all classic rock.

Someone mentioned Boogie Nights (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118749/), it is great.

2 of my overall favorites though have to be Goodfellas (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099685/) and Casino (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112641/) though. generations of great songs.

I know there's a movie out there I loved, and totally wanted a song from, but it isn't on the "official" soundtrack, the rest was good, but without that one song it pissed me off, and I can't think of it right now.

Which John Williams? The one who did Superman, the Star Wars OT and the first three Indy flicks? Or the one who jumped the shark alongside Lucas and Spielberg?

When you talk about great soundtracks in the
movies, I assume you mean music the accentuates
the mood or emotion of the scene in progress..

Many were aleady mentioned in posts..
Conan the barbarian,
The Blue Max,
Lord of the Rings,
And others etc...

Some I didn't see mentioned,
The Magnificent Seven, Elmer Bernstien, the best!!!

The Sting, The ragtime tunes were pure perfection...

True Grit, Saw it in the theater when released.. When
the Duke faces down the 4 badguys, and gives that
immortal line "Fill your hand, you SOB".. The crowd was
OUT OF THEIR SEATS, CHEERING!!! Don't see that often!
Thats what a great soundtrack will do... Wind up all the
emotion, then release it at he proper moment!!!

There are some others, but not many REALLY good ones..

Actually, I find I like Randy Edelmann's scores in general. Dragonheart had some GREAT music, and you've already heard my thoughts on his Gettysburg score, and Last of the Mohicans has come up as well.
