Title: Toughest Planes
Post by: Slade on February 10, 2009, 04:22:30 PM
Guys,

Golden BB aside.  On average what would you say are the toughest fighter planes for each country, i.e. which can take the most damage yet get you home the best?

Thanks,

Slade  :salute

I'll assume you're talking about fighter aircraft:

190F-8
F4F/FM-2
P-47

Those are my top 3.

For its size I don't think any plane in the game is tougher than the FM-2. I've taken solid hits from the 262's 30mm and kept going.

They Typhoon/Tempest can also be extremely tough, except for a direct shot to the jaw.

I wouldn't list anything with radiator coolant as "tough."

FM2, Yak.

Those are the ones where I can take the most beating, anyway.

I have found the F6F to be amazingly strong

Spitfires. The only fighter planes Iv seen take one or two 30mms to the wing and keep flying like nothing happened. I had one 16 take a 30mm to each wingroot one pass then one to the engine block the next. (that gave him an oil hit) He then flew for another two minutes before his engine cut out and I had to put another 30 into his canopy while he was trying to ditch to put him down.

Other then that those blue planes take more MG and small cannon then others IMO.

There are more than 3 countries, so I'll post which ones I think are the best:

P-47- Given
F6F- it's taken a good beating a lot of times and it always comes back home
KI-84- I think is one of the best
109's: There too small to hit so you can unload rounds and not hit anything, I know.
C2-either or

Pfft. I routinely knock Spits down with bursts of less than half a second of .50cal to the wing. Spits fall apart if you look at them funny.

After the Mosquito's damage model was redone it seems very tough to me.

The F4F and FM-2 would probably be my overall picks though.

The only plane where I usually need more than one 37 mm hit do rip it apart.

Great posts guys.  :aok

What about the Japanese planes?  I know they are flimsy in comparison to many others, but which would you say is the toughest fighter?  I am thinking the Ki-61.  Do you concur or have a different experience?

Thank again,

Slade

F4s take the best beating.
them maybe the
P-47
Mossie

Hurri can take a couple hits, but nothing like the F4s.

It's a tough bird, especially when people expect it to burst into flames like the zekes when the sun stays on them too long :D

As well as the F8.

half a wing, engine smoking and looking like a strainer for a sector and a half back home. F4U seems to have a glass engine or I'd put in there also.

Agreed on the F4U's engine. I wish they'd fix that.
Title: Re: Toughest Planes

The F4U rear stabilizers also seem to catch a lot of cannon shells.

I've flown F4U's with half a wing missing the rudder and flap on the other side, but if the engine takes a ping it's seems to die instantly quit often.

Ki 84 can take a beating. The Ki61 is reasonable but loses parts easily and a radiator hit gives you about 2 mins. I have flown 1 sector with only rudder, 1 flap and throttle control in one of these with a successful belly landing (lost a piece of landing gear also, not that I would have tried to use it if I had it.) and I can't remember but may have had an engine hit also.

But the toughest to down I find, are those F4F's

Many of you guys mentioned 190F8.  That is very interesting!  I never took that bird up enough to know this.  According to the stats: it cannot turn as well as the other 190s, it is relatively fast, dives well and has good guns.

Heck it might be the worst turning fighter in the game but then again it might be a great bomber killer.

Be interesting if any of you guys use this as your main or even predominant ride.  Like to know why you use it.

Thanks,

Slade  :salute

It better be tough... It's less maneuverable than Rosie O'Donnell's tour bus...

The F-Series of 190's was up-armored specially for the ground attack role.

It's meant for killing ground vehicles.  Take the 500kg bomb and 12 rockets.  My best was 4 tanks (fireflies) in one sortie, using only the bomb and rockets, but I've heard of others killing 5+.

The Spitfire damage model seems to be more or less glitched.  There are portions of the aircraft that will take 30mm's like nothing happened (ie. The engine and the section of fuselage between the cockpit and the tail).  There are several threads and films about that same thing.  Other than those two areas, Spits seem to fall apart about as easily as A6M's.

F4U's are pretty tough
P-47's can be tough, but wingroots seem like weak points (which is usually the case with most aircraft)
All 190's can take a beating.
I'm sure there are others I just can't think of right now.

Id have to say F8 and jug are the toughest fighters. The worst beeing zekes, and typhs.

Overall i see the lancs and b24s the easyest to pluck down period. They are big and made of glass. The B24 burns like the zeke too.

The B26s and B17s seems to be able to soak up a good ammount of ammo.

whats funny about the B26 is you can't kill the rear gunner no matter what.

+1  That aircraft's damage model is seriously fubar.  I often time don't bother attacking B-26s unless my positioning is perfect.  I'd rather attack a formation of B-17s any day.

And the Spitfire listing is sheerly absurd based on one players bad experience with lag.

I've seen my 9T survive some pretty nasty beatings, which tend to come fairly often  :lol

I saw the mossie mentioned here too. While it can soak up a handful of run of the mill .303/.50/etc...(wood doesn't rip, maybe they just create holes? /shrug). Cannons don't take long to tear one past the point of going home.

My A6m seems to absord a lot of fire power! Its really a tough bird!
There was this one time Greebo got me with his....... no wait, I was in Hurri.

And this other time a few 30mm hit me....... I reupped

My vote is for the Corsairs - especially the Chog of all things.

It seems the cannon in this bird are just bullet magnets, drawing damage away from all other critical components. I'll lose one, then two, and then finally someone will get the third gun and I'm just spitting out 20mm shells from one last cannon. The wings look like swiss cheese but they're still attached. Then you know it's time to leave.

Still, the nice thing about the other Hogs is that when someone buzzsaws off a wing, it's usually only the outer wing panel, meaning you can still make it home relatively easily. Heck, with the flaps down just one or two notches, even landing on the CV missing a wing isn't that hard.

The wingroots are pretty solid, that's for sure. I've rarely lost a whole wing in the Corsair, and so long as you've got enough air under you you can generally recover from a spin again. I know I've cheated a few guys of kills that way. they take half my wing, think they have me as I go spiralling down only to recover and limp away home.

However the engine is made of glass (can we PLEASE get that fixed?) and she loses the back of the fuselage somewhat easily.
