wow, this stinks... I can bet he sent kids to Juvy just for going past the city curfew (if it has one for certain ages like mine does)

The same thing happens in the prison system..
Sending people to prison/juvenile detention centers is a business..
For each inmate, the state (depending on which state) gets a certain amount of money from the federal government per year
even if the inmate gets out in less than a year...
In Cleveland, there were several cases where judges were throwing people in prison for menial things like first time
minor drug offenses.. The judge would then send a judicial order for the inmate to be released after 30 days..
It's a bum deal.. The guy gets a felony on his record for something that should have been a misdemeanor
and the state gets its money.. A SURPLUS in fact because the money that the prison received is supposed to
support that prisoner for the year and the prisoner is out in 30 days.. I bet you I know where the extra money goes!

One of the judges sent a girl to juvie for making fun of her vice-principal on her MySpace page.

This demonstrates why offenses that come with a custodial sentence and/or a permanent criminal record should always go before a jury.
Checks and balances are there for a reason. Anyone who believes that if you have done nothing wrong you have nothing to fear needs their head examining.

This will make a great movie of the week.
It was impossible for these two judges to do this by themselves. This type of an operation would require corruption (or fear) from the courthouse janitor on up. On the other hand, judges have garnered way too much power in this country. They are basically above the law. Does anyone remember the story about the judge who had a meter maid arrested for writing him a parking ticket?

Awful. The thing that gets me the most with all these sorts of exposed celebrity / higher up scandals are the apologies. Makes me sick how disengenuous they have become.
"Ciavarella, 58, who presided over Luzerne County's juvenile court for 12 years, acknowledged last week in a letter to his former colleagues, "I have disgraced my judgeship. My actions have destroyed everything I worked to accomplish and I have only myself to blame." Ciavarella, though, has denied he got kickbacks for sending youths to prison.
Conahan, 56, has remained silent about the case."
I've actualy got more respect for Conahan in this case. Ciavarella is not sorry for doing it. He's sorry he got caught. Now be a good scumbag and go off to prison, before you destroy a couple hundred more lives...
