SB2C Helldiver, mfd, by Curtiss and intended to replace the Douglas SBD Dauntless.
Known as the Son of a squeak 2nd class by Navy pilots, most preferred the obsolete Dauntless over this Beast.

When did they put this thing in here and WTF is it for?
-
It certainly was one helluva UGLY P.O.S. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
-
That thing was as much as hazard to its pilots than anything else.
Sure love to see the dauntless one day in AH

Anyone know how the gunner was supposed to shot back in that thing?
It looks like he could only shoot at planes coming from above.

I think part of the turtledeck retracts into the fuselage to allow a greater field of fire, tho im not 100% sure. Who needs a gunner anyway that thing had Hispanos in the wings, it just needs to HO. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) hehe

I just read about the British trials on the type and they wanted nothing to do with it, apparently it had some nasty structural problems.

FYI
I saw a flying Helldiver at the Confederate Air Show in Midland Texas in October '99.
Could it be the only one left?
