Home town airport. Every landing is exciting, thats what happens when the runway is not aligned in any way with any prevailing wind, in a windy town.

It's better than any rollercoaster ride on earth.

I think, if there is too much upwind the plane might have to do that.

Kai Tak was always the worst. Before they tore it down.

Yea, it looks like he touched down way too high of an airspeed. He probably carried extra speed on final to compensate for gusts or potential wind shear, and had no way to bleed off the speed. I bet that rather than go around, he decided to try to put it down. The problem is that nosewheel first landings tend to porpoise very violently which can break off the nosewheel strut or worse, launch the plane back airborn at a steep angle well below stall speed and with the engines in idle. That never ends well :confused:

If the upwind is strong, wouldn't the plane basically float if it landed the normal way? (nose pointed slightly up, etc).

I love flying into Kai Tak with my scenery in FS2004.

That's what I thought.... I'm no pilot, though I have taken a few lessons, and read alot, but that just looked BAD, as in if any FAA saw that bye bye license... that's just asking for a strut snap, even without the porpoise isn't it?

Problem is we have these wierd layers of speed as you come in, the airport is in a kind of valley, hills on either side. Prevailing wind NW/SE. The NW come in from over a hill range, developing turbulence, and the SE come up off the antarctic so are just plain mean. Sometimes you can hear the pilots really working the engines over :) . Wierd thing is there's never been any serious incidents.

Post by: Reschke on February 13, 2009, 11:13:21 AM: I don't know a lot about flying but it looked like the third plane in that first link at about :27 seconds could have landed the plane when I compare what the pilot did compared to some of the 747 landings as well. BUT what do I know....I just fly as a passenger in the things.

I hear in England they often find themselves with suddenly shifting crosswinds and certain ports require much experience crabbing.

I think some of those landings would have ended my career as a pilot personally.
