Next Tuesday, I'm going to Washington D.C. for NYLF for National Security.
See, I'm pretty redneck, farthest north I've ever been is Tennessee :lol and I've only flown small planes, so I got a few questions:
1. Can you listen to your iPod on the plane? I've been hearing a combinations of yes and no. I got a 2 hour flight, and a 4 hour flight, so I plan to be jammin out to some rock.
2. Is there some good tourist stuff I should just stay away from in DC? I know they have a pretty bad crime rate, and I'd hate to be kilt, as any of you would.
3. How close is DC to Boston? I'm apparently going to be going to DC from the Airport in Boston.
That's really about it, any answers would be nice. I'll post up pics and stuff, I get to go to the Pentagon IIRC, and I'm going to a Naval Air Station and Annapolis.

2. Any/all of the Smithsonian museums, starting with the various air and space ones. There are a few different ones in the area including one facility away from the main one that does restorations, but I can't remember it's name or where it is located. Also, the capitol stuff along the plaza including memorials and govt bldgs are fun to see. As for crime, don't wander around at night alone.
3. Dunno, take the train and/or a cab since DC parking sux (unless you have free parking at the hotel).

Yes, iPods are definitely allowed! Even the iPod Touch is.
There's a few things in D.C. that would be worth going to see, Arlington Cemetery etc, but nothing too major.
It's 7 hours 44 mins avg from Boston to D.C.
I assume you're flying into Boston-Logan Int'l?

The Air and Space Museum has a hangar / facility at Dulles where they have a lot of planes.
The Mall is where all the museums and monuments are, I'd definitely recommend going there.

And you're going to D.C...from Boston? Who coordinated YOUR trip? Were they drunk at the time?
I don't see why they wouldn't give you a flight to Dulles Int'l. Even Baltimore!

The Air and Space Museum has a hangar / facility at Dulles where they have a lot of planes.
The P38 at that location was a test bed aircraft, flown by many well known pilots including Bong. The 38 still has the original paint it had in the 1940s.

I don't see why they wouldn't give you a flight to Dulles Int'l. Even Baltimore!

Much more reasonable, that's a 55min drive to D.C.
Yeah, iPods and "all electronic devices are now allowed with the exception of cellular devices" near cruise alt.

I think they closed the Silver Hill facility when the Edvar-Hazy facility at Dulles opened.

Fort Washington? My Dad lives close to it and my brother and I still have fun running around out there. Fort Foote is close by and not nearly as exciting but a couple huge cannons are still there.
Air and Space is always a good one but you'll probably like the one out at the airport a bit more.
The WW2 memorial looks amazing. My Grandpa's last bomber group reunion took place in DC after they finished the momument.
I'd say walk around on the mall and hit some of the monuments since you've never been before. If your going for more than a few days we could come up with more stuff to see.

1. As indicated, they will tell you when to turn it on/off on the plane.
2. Along with the other things mentioned, you should check out some of the lesser known monuments/memorials. I personally prefer the FDR one. As for the crime rate, to be honest very few of the larger attractions are anywhere near a "bad" part of town. DC city council tries their hardest to make it look like a safe city, especially around the big tourist traps. :) Just be knowledgeable of your surroundings, (real-life SA :) ) and you'll be fine.
3. Yea BWI is a common airport to fly into for DC. You'll take the 30 bus from the airport down to Greenbelt, (roughly 30 mins) then hop on the Green line Metro into the city from there. (another 20-25) I think combined cost it's about 5 bucks.
I'll be back in town on Wednesday afternoon. (flying up to Maine tonight for some skiing :rock) Send me a PM if you want any further advice for places to eat, etc.
