I've read various reviews, good and not so good. I'll buy it though. I really enjoyed the first two. For whatever reason though I never acquired Perseus Mandate.

Yea I'm 2.5 hours into it so far - very fun, and damn creepy at times, have been startled/jumped several times, - still haven't gotten into any heavy supernatural action, but it's been intermittent. I really like it.  I'm playing it through on hard difficulty, it seems to be a nice balance.

One thing that sucks, for PC guys - it only plays in widescreen, so for an old school 19" CRT user like me, it's kind of annoying having the top/bottom of the screen cut off, but it isn't a big deal.

This was one I was looking at purchasing.  I liked the first one but I never got the expansion pack.  Any more feedback about the game would be great.

I am assuming it is wide screen only even if I use a 19" LCD monitor?

Hmm, if that's the case seems like I will have to get it for the PS3.

Yeah, unless the monitor is widescreen, it'll be chopped a bit at the top/bottom.  It hasn't taken anything away from the gameplay for me though, but you may want to get it for the 360 instead if you have the choice.

the expansions for the original F.E.A.R were crap.  Glad that when Monolith took the IP back, they proceeded with F.E.A.R 2 as though the two expansion packs didn't exist.

Holy crap that second one is creepy! What's the basic storyline behind this game, and what kind of setup do you need on PC for it?

It takes immediately after teh first game but instead of being a member of the F.E.A.R tactical unit, you're an agent sent out to arrest Alma's father.  He has been exploiting Alma by leeching her psychic powers and using her as a breeding cow for his minions.  Unfortunately for you and the father, Alma has escaped and is very pissed.

There is a demo out that you can download to check to see if your system is able to run it.

Play the first one (but not the crappy expansion packs) and make sure that if you do, you get the director's cut of the game.  Included is a 15 minute live action video with Alma and her 'shrink.  Very creepy and does a fantastic job of setting the mood for the game.

Does it play on Vista?

Plays flawlessly on my machine at max graphics settings, Vista 64.

Q9550 @ 3.83ghz, GTX 280, 4 gigs ram

It is damned creepy in some parts - I just started the level inside the school.  So far I like it, but maybe I'm not as picky as some gamers.

FEAR 2 is Vista compatible but FEAR 1 will not find Vista sound.

I've been really enjoying this game. It uses the same engine as the original Fear, only it's been vastly updated. So if your rig will run the first Fear, it should run this one. I'm running everything on Max on a ghetto gaming rig (1600x900 on a 22" WS, never stutters, 40+fps at all times, definitely playable to the fullest extent). I would try to bump the resolution up to 1680x1050, but it's already beautiful, no need to mess with it at the moment.

Just got into the Wade Elementary area myself. Something about the ghost like apparitions (not Alma obviously, big difference) gives me a full body chill just about every time I catch a glimpse of one. I know one shot gets them to poof, but they're coming back, and you don't know where they're coming from. Not exactly "scary" but enough to give you a bit of a jolt.

One enemy I have had a bit of trouble with though, maybe someone can shed some light for me...are the guys who use fallen soldiers as "puppets". The only way I've found to get rid of the "puppet master" thus far is to blow him/her into a thousand tiny pieces. Using a rocket launcher on a soft target just doesn't seem right, but it's been getting the job done thus far. Wasted a ton of ammo trying to gun them down but to no avail. Anyone know any tricks to them other than using 'nades or the rocket launcher?

My specs:

Hp Pavilion a1410n with an Athlon 64 3800 at 2.41Ghz(single core!) 2.25G of un-paired Ram XP SP2
Creative Xtreme Gamer
XFX Geforce 9800GT running 181.20 drivers
Antec Tru-Power Trio 430W PSU

I didn't hit the Letterbox snag I've heard so much about, I'm assuming it's because I have a widescreen.

Serenity, I believe we had a discussion, albeit brief, about having similar HP systems a few months ago. Yeah store bought might be kind iffy, but after you replace everything but the motherboard and processor, they'll handle an awful lot. With a decent graphics card and RAM, you should be fine for Fear 2.

I too like this game a lot, and the ending was not bad at all actually I think it's good. Though clearly, the ending of this game is not the ending of it, the story. So it leaves a wide opening for FEAR 3. Running a 2560x1600 resolution on widescreen and it couldn't look any better.

This is a quality title, highly recommended.  :aok

You oughtta be set then :) You can probably even try out the demo on your current rig, always nice to get a feel for it first. But yeah, gut the HP and save mobo/processor upgrades for a later date (I've been holding off for about 2 years). I don't have any experience with ATI cards (I've been a Geforce junkie since day one) but it should run flawlessly on your rig. While my processor isn't strong (2.5ishGhz single core) I think my 9800GT carries the extra weight without breaking a sweat.

Hope come Thursday you're able to get into it :)

Yeah, the lousy thing is, the day the parts come in, im spending the weekend away from my gaming rig! lol. Well, since you have the same stuff I do (Same starting point) I might be looking to you when I go into more advanced upgrades. Downloading the demo... whenever I find it.
