Jesus! Listen to that thing in the dives! What a monster!
Awesome link, expat.
That landing was perfect, too. Great stuff... looks like a skilled pilot.

I thought I should point out, it's a corsair of VF-17... :rock
-
This video should be required viewing for anyone who thinks our Corsair is over-modeled.
-
Awesome video :aok
Cant believe he was allowed to direct energy towards the audience tho.
-
I can fully understand where "Whistling Death" came from. That's a DAMN frightening sound to hear even WITHOUT the .50cal blazing and bombs falling on your head.
-
What an awesome piece of American Machinery! And to think I personally flew 12 of them to their destruction just last night.
-
Fabulous shots of the Corsair. :aok Boy imagine being some poor, skinny little, starving IJA soldier and seeing that monster diving in on you? The 0.50s must have been ferocious and that ain even counting the rockets, bombs, napalm...ect Its terrific to see some still flying.

Here's a coupe of real howlers ;)

Augh, having a very tough time getting a link to work, has some weird character in it that I cannot identify. Go to youtube and search for
P-51 Mustang super low pass...worth the trip.

This reminds me of an article I read… And this had to be back in the 1970s… about a group of ‘sport pilot’ mustang owners who traveled to the Honduras to see original P51s still in military service.
The article pointed out the difference in flight characteristics between a civilianized mustang and one that still has all of the weight that is involved with armor and armament. Perhaps the biggest impression that was made on me is how the military pilots would not consider doing a wheeled in (on just the main wheels) landing. The military aircraft would basically, flare and stall, at landing and touch down on all three wheels simultaneously.
I also remember a picture of the tips of the .50cal guns being covered with the caps from rum bottles. The absence of the bottle caps would prove upon landing that the guns had been fired during the flight… Strange, the things that stick in your head after all these years. (Or it could be just be old-age re-writing what I read nearly 40 years ago.)
What I’m saying is, what you are seeing in the video may not accurately represent what that aircraft was capable of doing when it was actually in service and fully loaded.

Why is it some people have to come into a thread just to be smart-alecks?

ZooZoo bounced a corsair. Had that Hog pilot known there was a picking 190 around it might have been a different story. :D

Sweet, Thanks for the link!

Awsome, just awsome :O
Thnx for sharing :salute

Goaly while it's true the Corsair in the film may be doing things wartime war weary Corsairs may not have been able to pull off.
As Widewing said it's good to see one being wrung out as God intended. I don't think I've ever seen a Warbird put through it paces like that at an air show.
It's an awesome film.

Always liked this one.

If anything, Shifty, the Wartime Corsairs were even more maneuverable than the one in the film. I mean, warbird pilots are often warned not to pull these vintage planes too far into the envelope, but in war, they could do just about anything to survive.
The main reason why people really think our Corsair is way too much of a UFO is likely because they haven't tried hitting the CV deck at stall speed, keeping the plane manually trimmed in accordance with the the pilot's manual.
-
Good point. :aok
I actually am just starting to get the most out of my Corsair, and still have a lot to learn.
I used to thump around only in the D model but the last month and a half I've discovered the -1 and -1A.
After years of flying this sim and it's two older brothers I've finally found a plane I absolutely love to fly constantly.
I wouldn't call it a UFO though. However it stacks up well against any plane in the sim IMO.
The video is just awesome to me, the few chances I've had to see WWII era fighters being flown, the display is normally
much more docile than the one in the vid.
-
A little time and you'll earn the vertical thrust boost shifty.
-
I love the 1A. itd my main ride. probabyy 95% of my flying. I'd love to get THAT engine sound ingame!

At about 4:30 of the original posters' link, there's a GREAT "whistling death" sound. Very nice post....thanks!
Gotta admit I love the sound of merlins -- one of my all time favorite moments was hearing a Lancaster warm up and take off. But while the Merlin sounds like a sweetly tuned instrument, the Corsair's double banked radial just growls with raw power. Love em both!
-
Interesting to note...everybody remarks on the sound...but no one seems to have noted where the sound comes from...for inquiring minds...that low howl and hi pitched whine you hear is the result of the intercooler screens located at the inboard leading edge of the wing.... in case anyones interested.
Regards,
Ag

Most of us are already familiar with the why so it didn't need mentioning.
-
Man that first pass is off the hook and the camera is perfectly panned back to show it's true speed and agility. Now that is a Corsair demo. F-i-n-g Awesome!!!

I agree, its great to see someone flying the hell out of one.

The only thing holding back warbirds airborne is scarcity of parts, right? If, for some reason, manufacturing of blueprinted parts were cheaper, we would see more of them, right? Is there any other factor?
-
parts, insurance , regulations ......
There are new insurance regs in the EU that will put the bigger aircraft ie B17 , out of action as they have to have the same insurance as a commercial passenger aircraft , allready you cant get a ride at airshows in C-47'S :(
The fun detectives are in force .....
-
But the insurance and regulations are tied to warbirds parts being scarce, aren't they?
-
Seems the mustang is a bit of a howler too
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHrcmSNgJRM
Couple of days off with nothing better to do but trawl the net for warbird vids :)
-
I love the 'howl' or 'whistle' that came from the Commonwealth Boomerang. There is one flying at alone at about 3 minutes and 50 seconds into this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccZ94HmygSA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccZ94HmygSA)
If we ever get the buffalo, I'll change my next plane wish to the Boomerang... I love the odd birds.
-
Re: the original vid.
Looks to me like the wingtips are clipped. Was this a a Royal Navy bird, or did someone just like squared off tips? Or am I mistaken?
Whistling (Roaring) Death indeed! :aok
-
Alright already! I'm convinced! I'll give the F4U a chance next time I log on!
-
Ty for the video :aok That thing can turn :salute

Just use lots of the uber flaps, they'll get you out of any jam. :aok or so I've heard. :devil
-
They definitely look like the clipped RAF wings. Would be interesting to see if the wings actually fold. Goodyear built Hogs did not fold(FG-1D). I would like to see the odegaard F2-G rung out like that.

It's the blue one, you might not have seen it before

Insurance and increased regulation is the biggest hindrance we face these days. Insurance costs for "hull" insurance can run 200k a year on a 2 million dollar aircraft. This is not conducive to insurance other than liability.
-
But that insurance is up because the parts are rare, right? If the parts were less scarce (e.g. if mfg'ing them were more accessible), regulation would be the only obstacle to seeing more of them at airshows and the like?
-
I think insurance prices are driven by regulations , certainly in europe where it's determined by wt (i think ?) hence you have B17'S having to have the same coverage as a commecial airliner even though the 17 isnt allowed to carry passengers ........
-
I see, thanks.

Cheers for the 104 vid , the howl is great :)
Did you ever see The Vikimgs ? German navy display team thet were great .

I remember being at Mildenhall for the air display , i was arond 12-13 yeaqrs old armed with a real cheap kodak camera trying to get a good picture of one of the 104's everything down n dirty when the second shot past at a great rate of knots i jumped a mile and got a shot of blue sky :)
