Can anyone either get, or point me to, a sound from this clip:
http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,258636.0.html
As the aircraft accelerates you can here very distinctive high-pitched and quite loud drone or whine, which I think would sound EXCELLENT blended with the Corsair "wind" sound from I THINK Sketchworks 2009.
-
i would have to agree Sax. :aok
NOT
-
I believe that sound is from the supercharger which can only be heard at certain angles from the plane. Mainly from the low front area. U never hear it in the cockpit but would be nice if U can have a different external sound from the cockpit sounds at same time.
-
My understanding was airflow over the oil cooler inlets in the wing leading edges that generated that sound.
It SHOULD be pointed out that in the video this sound is audible from more than just the lower-front. I think a couple passes you can hear it building as the aircraft descends with its top to the viewer, and it never cuts off abruptly when the aircraft passes, (as would be suggested if it was only really audible from certain angles) you can definitely hear it gradually fade out as the aircraft moves away.
-
Sax, give me a time frame of at least 5 sec.
I'll see if I can chop it out, and clean it up a bit :aok
-
There's not a stretch much longer than one or two seconds where you can REALLY hear it due to the distance of the aircraft. The problem is that it's building and trailing off as the plane makes its flyby, so there's very little points where the pitch and volume is constant. I think about the best part is one of the last flybys before landing, maybe around 4:25-4:27
Listening to the sound closely it reminds me a bit of a tornado siren with a slightly higher-pitch. Maybe modifying the wail of a tornado siren by upping the pitch and cleaning up any oscillation or buzz to make the sound consistent, then mixing that with the Sketchworks "Wind" sound for the Corsair would match pretty close.

Real fast and dirty, but here we go..
Let me know what I can change. :aok
EDIT: I uploaded .wav files and youtube didn't like it so I changed them to mp3's (be patient, they may still be processing)
NEW EDIT: YouTube blows. Try this.....

already took them down or did i break the intertube?
-
I have some recorded flyby's at home. I will go through them and see if that sound is there and if i can do anything with it. If I can I will add it to the Sketchworks soundpack.
-
Messa,
I'm at work so I'll have to check it when I have a moment at home, but thanks for the quick turn-around. :aok
-
How ironic, I'm at work, too :D
:noid

Messa,
If you listen to the audio on the video the whine should be one long, solid, continuous tone, rather than a pulse (as I posted before, the fade in/out is caused by the aircraft moving towards and away from the camera). It's also fairly clear by itself, any distortion in the whine sounds like it comes from the sound of the engine and prop.
That being said, your mixed versions sound a LOT like what I'm looking for. Clean up the distortion on the whine and make it a continuous tone and I think you've got it nailed.
:aok
-
It might take a bit.
I won't be able to spend too much more time on it anymore today.
There isn't much material to work with with regard to a continuous (no pulse) sound.
I threw some compression on it to squeeze the sound out, ran it through a parametric EQ and a noise gate (to isolate the sound further), put it through the time stretcher, then the rice krispies filter (to remove snap crackle & pop) and then some more compression to smooth out the sound overall.
I'm afraid that if I stretch it too much, it will sound awful. The first thing I tried was some old fashioned cut/paste action, but I couldn't grab a long enough sample to use without it sounding choppy. I'll give it some more TLC later on tonight when I can slap on my Sennheiser 'phones, so I can isolate myself from outside noise and get a better grip on it than I can with these cheap Staples junk ones at work. :furious
I also have better software at home in the studio (a fancy word for a blocked off/soundproofed corner of my basement) :D
-
The mp4 from that video may be better quality, if you're sampling it, than the flv that youtube displays. www.keepvid.com will give you a link to the mp4 source.

Nice. :aok
I'll check it out when I get more time here, or when I get home.

Orig wind file I have for Corsairs in game:
www.arabian-knights.org/files/wind.wav
Here is a sample of what I think u want:
www.arabian-knights.org/files/wind2.wav
I think I need to up the pitch of the whistle sound though.
Here is another one:
www.arabian-knights.org/files/wind3.wav
-
Wind3.wav is REALLY close, and I think the pitch is about right. It could maybe be a TEENY bit louder, but otherwise I think that's it.
-
www.arabian-knights.org/files/wind4.wav
-
:aok
TY sir! That's it EXACTLY.
-
I used the supercharger whine I have for the 109's and modified the pitch and time on it. I then combined them into the wind.wav file. All the flyby's I have which is 4 of them by a f4u-4 doesn't produce that sound like the you tube file. But it does have more of a High pitch supercharger whine as it approaches. Not sure why there be a difference unless it because of the air temp, speed of the plane, maybe he wasn't pushing it to create such a suction in the air intake, who knows, lol. :aok
-
The F4U-4 moved the oil cooler from the wingroots to the chin scoop, right? Maybe some change in the plumbing or structure of those wingroot intakes had an effect that altered the sound of air moving through them?
-
I've read that the whistle sound is created by airflow rushing through the gun barrels, and has nothing to do with the supercharger.
-
I've never heard gun barrels, and I can't picture a howl THAT loud being caused by air through the barrels.
-
I'd think you'd hear that howl with every plane if it was the gun barrels. I'd also think any noise through the barrels would be higher pitched.
-
Sax,
what sound do you currently use for the Corsair's engine running sound?
After my computer crashed, I was able to rummage through and replace EVERY one of my plane sounds with the same ones or better compared to what I was using prior to my comp crash...
...except for that is, my F4U's and 109's.
If anyone has some really spectacular sounds for those two planes' engines, I'd appreciate it if you could upload it.
-
For the interior engine sound I used one of the ones AKDogg posted in the Sketchworks 2009 thread. It was a separate file, not part of the actual sound back.
-
It is in the soundpack now.
www.arabian-knights.org/files/sketchworks2009.zip
The only file that isn't the soundpack is the wind sound that is posted here.
-
Thanks, gents.
-
Well I'm guessing that the sound is only caused at certain AoA. If it was the super charger, then wouldn't you hear it all the time ?

No because of its placement. Sound would be blocked by plane if u listen from the rear. The sound we talking about is coming from the Air duct. On -4 hog though, it doesn't make that sound. What u do here on the -4 though is more of the supercharger probably due to it be larger then the other hogs.
-
Is there some way to incorporate the propeller sound in with the engine sound? It would sound more realistic that way IMHO.
-
It does sound like AoA. Its intensity seems to go in proportion with AoA/G's in the vids. I don't think gun barrels would be it either.. Just too small and in too straight-forward part of the airflow to sound so loud compared to the engine noise.

A long time ago I made some AH sounds and added propeller noise lifted from another game. I don't know if they ever got around or not. You just have to have software that will allow you to paste a mix or a track mixer. It's tedious, but it most certainly can be simulated within reason. The issue is you can't get it to respond to RPMs. And if you think finding engine sounds is hard, try finding a propeller sound that has no engine sound to it so that you can mix with other plane sounds. I got mine from a MS sim as they did various file mixing for engine sounds, Propeller noise was actually it's own file as I do beleive RPMs was in the mix.
from what I remember anyway

U are correct. Btw, I use Adobe Audition 3 professional. Excelent piece of software.
