Title: PSU Recommendations Please
Post by: Coogan on February 18, 2009, 12:48:41 PM
In preparing for the new terrain that is coming, I have been trying to upgrade my computer as much as I can.  I'm adding a Video card and 2 Gig of RAM.  The problem I'm having is finding the right PSU.  Anything around 500w will be plenty.  I'd like to keep the cost down below $75.00 if possible.
Here's the PSU I have now.

Delta Electronics Inc.
Model DPS-250AP-22B

Thanks for any suggestions.

Even if you don't want one of the PSUs they recommend, you will learn something about selecting a good PSU by reading the article.

I'd go with either.

Thanks Karaya.  The first link you posted looks like it will meet my needs just fine.  Now as long as it will physically fit into my case, I'll be all set.  I have an Acer Aspire e380, and it seems to have quite a lot of room inside.

Not bad, you have a few more options as well for VC's.

Also, on RAM.   Your MB from what I can see is a Dual Channel board.   You might want to try and find compatible 2 x 2GB sticks.   If you use 3 rails, it might bog down your system.

I was thinking along the lines of these sticks for the Ram.  I think this thing supports DDR2 800.  If not, I'll get the DDR2 667.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134125

If it supports 800, I'd go for this instead if the MB will allow it

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104020 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104020)

Also, you might want to download either

Everest Home:
http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html (http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html)

or CPU-Z:
http://www.download.com/CPU-Z/3000-2086_4-10050423.html (http://www.download.com/CPU-Z/3000-2086_4-10050423.html)

Both will help you determine what you have in the way MB capabilities, RAM (Speed), etc.

The OCZ is: 5.9 x 5.5 x 3.4 inches (W x L x H)

Thanks 1701E, that does save me some time.  That's one thing I want make sure of is that it will fit.  I'll pull the side panel of my tower again later on to get some measurements.

Karaya, my system caps out at 4Gig RAM.  I already have two Gig now, so I'm thinking the Kingston's I posted above should work.  I just checked, and the DDR2 800 will work on my MOBO.
As far as the PSU goes, I may go with your first link.  I don't have a lot of extras or anything on here.  Just one DVD/ROM Drive.  I don't plan on putting in a second drive.

Thanks for your help fella's.

Keep in mind, if you find that PC & Colling PSU to be too big, they have a "Dell size one" that you might be able to use.   I thikn the price is the same and it's a bit smaller.

look on newegg.com filter your results and buy accordingly.  I purchased one that wasn't recommended originally due to a shaky history (bfg) and it turned out to be a 5 star ps months later and passed tests with flying colors.  Got it from CUSA when they went under.

Ah the spoils of war..

BFG used to carry lifetime warranties with their PSU's IIRC (same with their video cards).  Then I believe they outsourced their manufacturing lesser quality somebody, and their warranty for PSU's now varies from 3-5 years.

Ok, I think I've got things narrowed down a little.  I think I'm going to go with this Video Card.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133205.  Even though I only have one PCI Express X16 slot, this card says that it is backwards compatible.  So I'm hoping it will work in my MOBO. (GeForce 6150SE nForce 430)

This PSU doesn't seem too bad for the price.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152028.  I don't know what that Hybrid 2 stuff is all about, but it seems to have sufficient power.  As far as I can tell, It appears to come with more cables than I'm going to need.
Since this is just a bit over my planned budget, my 2 Gigs of Ram will have wait until early April.
I am concernced about the 8800GT being compatibile with my MOBO, but I guess I won't know until I try.

Skuzzy hates modular cables on PSUs but I haven't had any problems with mine (seasonic with modular cables).

For a psu with modular cables, that is a great price.  Hopefully they didn't cut costs by going cheapo on the modular connectors.

I don't have a problem with modular cables either. I mean, the cables are modular on the motherboard and hard drive end, so connectors can't be all that bad to have on the power supply end, is my way of thinking.

Generally, I recommend Seasonic or Corsair (half of which are built by Seasonic anyway) power supplies as being the right combination of good price versus good performance, but if you're willing to do research, there are a lot of good brands.

I recently replaced a power supply for a client's E-machines P4 computer with a Corsair power supply. Both were 550 watts, but the Corsair easily weighed THREE TIMES HEAVIER than the failed unit. Good components and heatsinks weigh a lot more than crummy ones.

Oh, and the Corsair power supplies have a 5-year warranty, which I think speaks pretty well of them.
