Found some pics of a P-40 that I would like to know a bit more about. I know that it is Aussie and more than likely based on Morotai during the war. Trying to find out more as to unit and possible color of the markigns for skinning. Thanks. <S>
From these pics, the flashing on the cowl looks black and the spinner painted white. Maybe like the P-40 at the end?

Silat, please return Corky to us. Thank you.

Dan still pops in to check the boards from time to time.
Skuzzy, could you please move this over to the Skinners forum? I think Dan would find it quicker there. Also, a few of the skinners may have links for more info on it. Would make a beauty of a skin for the 40 drivers.

Here you go not the same plane but possibly the same squadron? Also this one has some nose art.
Also a number of RAAF training squadrons used bare metal P-40'S. Looking at the terrain around the planes I don't think the pictures were taken in Australia.

The P40 in the RAF markings is a surviving P40. The story of that bird is kind of amazing as it was bought surplus after the war and taken back to a guys farm and has survived ever since. It's one of the most original P40s in existance.
His son has a website about it here:

Thanks for the info Dan. One quick question. Is the paint scheme that it is in now a WWII period paint job or is it post war? I wanted to skin it, but all of the pics in the aluminum paint scheme are post war pics from what I can tell by looking at the vehicles sitting next to it. Didn't know if it carried that livery in WWII. Thanks and <S>!!

It was in comoflage during it's operational time. It wasn't stripped of paint until it's wartime career was over.

I think it is most likely the paint scheme on the RAAF P-40's it had during the war. The only question would be was it an OTU aircraft that was possibly? used only for training & was stationed overseas post war meaning it never was used in combat & then not be able to qualify. I still think you would be safe though on any of the RAAF planes.

My first thought is that these are OTU birds after their operational service. You see lots of Spit Vcs stripped of paint at that point too with the RAAF. I can't give a definative answer yet, but will keep looking

dan please come back. :(

If that is the Canuck P-40 I'm thinking of, it was stripped of paint for a war bonds drive.
It was then sold surplus after the war ended. I'd scan a picture but I'm moving in less than
a week and it's just not worth the hassle :)

Thanks for the help everyone. Was messing around online and found that the livery I wanted to skin is in fact an OTU livery. Dang!!!! Oh well, thanks again and a big <S> to you.

Well it is a while since this topic came up but while I was back in Australia I stayed at an Uncles house who was in the Australian army towards the end of the war & served in New Guinea he had a collection of books issued by the Australian war memorial during the war & they had belonged to my grandfather as well as a book published about Gallipoli & my grandfather was wounded in battle when served their during WWI.
Any way while looking in it I found a picture of a bare metal P40N & since there was no scanner at my uncles I took some pictures from the books so I will stick a few of them on here as well. Also I visited the Australian war memorial & was watching video footage on display of RAAF P40's in combat runs it too showed video of a bare metal P40.
Long story short I would say pretty conclusive evidence that the RAAF used P40'S with bare metal skins & did see combat as you can see with the date from one of the books I took a photo of.
