Title: Whats Up with you guys
Post by: Plawranc on February 19, 2009, 05:46:23 AM
 I'm having a rant here

Now i have been noticing that when young players try to play this game the old players tend to leave them out.

Now they can be 15 or 16 and totally non squeaker but the old guys still have it in for them. Now this kind of thing really has to stop. The gaming community these days is mostly young people and being mean to them is gonna just in essence tell them to P** off and not come back and in turn going to lower sub rates and inadvertently cause the cancellation and Eventual shutting down of the game we love so much.

For this reason i must strongly suggest you guys lay off the young players and if they get annoying don't just yell SQUELCH say "dude could you not do that please" and that way everyone is happier and if they don't stop squelch them for ignoring your warning.

I also wish to stretch the point that AGE has nothing to do with skill. A misconception i have noticed is that anyone under 30 is a complete noob and not to waste your time on. Now if this continues it will create hostility and eventual confrontation. THIS IS A GAME and everyone wants a good time so respect everyone no matter their age no matter their pitch of voice and no matter their skill.

OK

Young and old have a very different way of looking at things. They (for the most part) are trying to turn this into some teen aged version of Quake High. I don't expect folks to see things the same as I, but I'm not gonna watch that happen and just stand by. That aside, WHAT does a 40-ish guy and a 15 year old kid have to chat about? Certainly nothing in life (who said what about WHO in school? :lol.....his newest tongue piercing ? :huh...the Jonas Brothers? :rofl :rofl) So it just comes down to this game, and our different approaches, and for the most part, those approaches, those attitudes,  are simply day and night....no reason there isn't room for both, but don't expect them to converge

OK

And in the real world I'm not a fluffin baby sitter.  OK you make some valid points for an ideal world, which this isn't.

Skill level as in ACM is very much an even keel and like you said nothing to do with age.  When we talk of team work then the MAJORITY of younger players ain't got a clue or lack the discipline or attention span to see it through.  Far to many example of newbies screwing it up for the rest of us.  One kid, no matter how many times you tell him, will still keep typing on channel 6 help (orange text).  Will still keep upping of a CV 1 sector out, blah blah blah.

So it comes to a point where 1 kid / newbie is buggering up a plan for 15 + other guys.  I advocate tolerance at first but when they don't listen then I STRONGLY advocate giving the kid a good telling off.  Shape up or ship out.

Metaphor

Farther bull and son bull crest a hill and in the valley below they see 10 very pretty cows.  Son bull eagerly says to father bull....."lets run down there and shag one each".  Father bull replies ...."no son, lets walk down there and shag em all"

P.S  click top link in sig for translation of "shag".

With all due respect Plawranc that knife cuts both ways.

This is an adults Sim, with gameplay, so if younger members work hard to act mature, and responsible, they tend to be greeted with open arms by the community.  If on the other hand they act like a bunch of 11 - 13 yr old hoodlums, they get treated like them.

I've been here since AH opened its doors, and I've been a AH Trainer for most of that time.
I bet I deal with more new young players daily than anyone else here.
Just like people everywhere, some are good, some have attitudes, some are loud, some expect everything
handed to them.

Those who can't follow rules get educated by me pretty quickly in the TA.
Those who treat others with respect and consideration find lots of help and advice.
But if you want to come into a community, first rule is you have to adjust to the community.
Don't expect the community to adjust to you.

Average age of AH pilots I think if you added them all up would probably be mid 30's or higher.
So if your under 18, try acting like your 35.
Listen much, say little, proper grammar, good sentence structure, and a good attitude all go a long way around here.

Read the manual or a few of the help pages instead of just endlessly saying "How do I fly"
And when you are directed to the trainers site or the netaces site, actually take the time to go there.

I'm 52, and been at AH off and on since 2002.  I agree with bj229r.  Also, I do befriend kids in the game.  Sometimes with embarrassing and vexing results.  The embarrassment I can put up with.  The frustrating ones like getting continual check 6's (hasn't happened in years) is another matter.

In my experience, it's not the kids who are the crux of problem.  It's the 18 to to under 30 crowd who have something to prove socially.  Those who engage in verbal combat and are just generally combative.  Makes the game less enjoyable.  The same sort of antagonism we see here on the bulletin board.  That sort of thing.

Now, to say something on the kids behalf, there are some that are fun and want to learn.  Yes they gush and say things you wish they hadn't said on the country channel.  But one flew with me a few time a few days ago.  Was a good kid.  Was more of a plus than a minus plying AH with him.

A lot of downside of Aces High comes up on range channel.  The worst of it have come from post pubescent adults not squeakers.  At least that's how it has been on my end.

I've posted missions that, at times feels like I'm Mother Goose being followed by goslings. But there is that occasional kid that joins that surprises the hell out of me when he asks virtually the same questions a well mannered, respectful adult would ask. <<S>> to thier parents.

I'm with Lynx and Ghosth, if you act like an A--hole your going to get treated like one. Whether your a kid or an adult it really doesn't matter. Unfortunately, these days that gap is closing much too fast.

i have never seen anyone in my old squad(hired guns) or in my current squad(satans playmates) exclude or berate younger players.

I dont think anyone actively berates or attacks younger players simply due to age.

What they (we) are attacking is stupidity.  It just so happens that, more often than not, stupidity and age share an inverse correlation.

What all new players need to understand, regardless of age, is that plenty of us have been playing these games for more than a decade.  As such, we have developed a fairly tight-knit community and, by and large, have a certain way of doing things.

When a new player full of piss and vinegar shows up after getting "pumped up" watching Pearl Harbor, starts shooting his mouth off, and generally acts like an bellybutton - the reaction will not be favorable.

So - lets try it this way since, in my humble opinion, the real problem here is that the younger generation has issues with accountability.

If you dont want to be treated like a child, dont act like one.

Simple as that.

I usually go for weeks without squelching anybody, but recently I've had to squelch 2 or 3 players every time I log in. inane running commentary, wingman chat and just talking bollocks on country ch gets old fast.

problem is, you try to point them in the right direction and they just ignore it. theres a guy on nits atm who must be in his first week, hes now offering to "teach" other newbies how to fly. yesterday he posted a "take teh HQ!" mission and, despite experience players explaining why it was a waste of time, spent 10mins shouting on country ch trying to fill the 2 C47 slots ...

I spent years in the army baby sitting other peoples poorly raised children.
Im not going to do it here..

But, I think for the old timers we might find that if a couple of "squeekers" banded together and began submitting screenshots of the abuse this game might change very rapidly.
Your self attempts at being snobs might backfire and suddenly you will find yourself outnumbered.
One of my favorite tricks is to change my id every so often.  And watch my "friends" and "nice guys" insult and do nasty things to people when they dont think anyone who knows is around..it tells you a great deal about true character.
My current favorite nasty tricks are...

1.) People who spam on 200 that FSO is about to start and invite newer players to join them in the arena..once they arrive they are insulted by the staff and tossed out. Sometimes accompanied by laughter.
2.) Greenie generals..Vet players who demand that non-squad oriented players do as they say..and immediatly call them noobs or squeekers when they question that "authority".
3.) Saved this one for last cause I love it so...The professional.. this one screams on 200 when a no name kills him and sends nasty little private messages because and I quote " your a dirty Hoing noob and jesus should kill you." That one was from a 4 year player  that starting firing on my Niki HO at 1.5 out. lol.

So as you see gentlemen it is very possible that the new guys are more wronged than wrong..perhaps brush up on your social skills before calling them out.

Why would the FSO insult people wanting to play?  The FSO staff doesnt spam arenas to get players in FSO. They only want those that have pre-arranged with an FSO squad to take part. It insults those that took the time to join a squad, make sure they are on time and read up on the orders to be ready. Dont blame the FSO staff and players.

Saved this one for last cause I love it so...The professional.. this one screams on 200 when a no name kills him and sends nasty little private messages because and I quote " your a dirty Hoing noob and jesus should kill you." That one was from a 4 year player  that starting firing on my Niki HO at 1.5 out. lol.i can't believe people keep getting these pm's. i've never been pm'd when i kill someone, except to compliment the fight. but then i don't ho.

So as you see gentlemen it is very possible that the new guys are more wronged than wrong..perhaps brush up on your social skills before calling them out.some noobs bring it on themselves. they act like spoiled brats, and there's any number of players that are happy to treat them like poop when they do. then there's the kids that come in here, and act more like adults than a lot of us do. they never seem to have to be here complaining. it seems to me that you get what you give. come in the arena, be respectful, ask questions nicely(that means don't demand an immediate answer), and you'll get that very same respect in return.

LOL! I am gonna have fun with this one. The only time I have ever seen these little kids that need to be squelched or told off are the ones who play on their father's account. Other than that they are just numbers guys that don't even know how to transmit Vox.

I strongly disagree with this rant.  It is the community's responsibility to police unwanted, disrespectful and disruptive behavior for ourselves.

I will make one point and then generalize it to all such unwanted behaviors.

YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO TYPE IN CAPS 24/7.  To most of us it means that you are yelling and is considered very rude.  When I encounter these screamers, I try and politely ask them to turn the caps off.  I may get help from other players, I may not.  It is when this advise is blatantly ignored several times over for a substantial amount of time, that I begin to lose my patients with such a player.  Instead of further wasting my time and energy, I choose the easy route and that is squelch.

Not only that, but you will find the community largely will choose to shun such players from their squads, missions and activities.  If they wont listen to reason, we are left with very few courses of action.  Eventually (hopefully), they will realize that they are not receiving assistance that is normally given to others and change the behavior.

Now, in order to gain acceptance, obviously the behavior must have changed. However, that alone does not always mend the relationship (depending on how blatant the refusal to conform was).  But a thoughtful apology to those that were offended goes along way (as in life).  I do not know if this a young player, but it doesn't really matter anyway.  When your entire team is telling you something, maybe its time to shut up and listen.

There is one online currently that I will not help, clear, fly alongside nor listen to, simply because his actions were so severe and no apology or even an attempt at one was made to the community.  We are not stupid people that easily forget who offended us 2-3 months ago.

My 2 cents

OK

I'll bet that the guy that started this thread never shows up again in the thread, whats that tell you.  One the other hand now that I've called him on it maybe he will.

I've posted missions that, at times feels like I'm Mother Goose being followed by goslings. But there is that occasional kid that joins that surprises the hell out of me when he asks virtually the same questions a well mannered, respectful adult would ask. <<S>> to thier parents.

The gaming community isn't mostly young people necessarily. It depends on the game and the target audience the developers tailor the product to. For example, I play Everquest, the average age in my guild is 42. If you look at World of Warcraft the average age is about 14.

Similarly, back in AW the average age was quite old, as mostly WWII hobbyists and enthusiasts played. In AH, over the years, as the game has been made to appeal more to the instant gratification generation, the Quake'ers are predominating causing the average age to plummet from what it was 10-15 years ago. The affordability of adequate gaming hardware over the years is also a factor. Younger people can afford better computers able to handle high-end gaming.

Well If your saying young players have no dicsipline How about the young guys in rolling thunder or the young guys who are members of the real teamwork based squads.

And me for example I am an Air force cadet in real life and on this game on a mission i have always done my job if i get killed i reup and so on. But yet again we all have a valid point Some kids *cough spatial , abstract* Have a major problem with authority and that cant be tolerated in a squad so lynx if they resist stomp on them No probs with that.

Well Im sure that being a trainer has given you an insight but yet again i must stress that if they ask a stupid question like that give them a smart answer and PM them on how to run through things and how to PM people and switch onto channels.

If we had a group of trainers posted in the MA on seperate channels Ready to help new recruits i think it could work.

You won't be 'discriminated' against for being younger, unless there's a reason to 'discriminate' against you.

So shut up. Be mature instead of whining 'baawwwww I'm just a kid!' when you get put in your place.

You can't always PM them to explain how to run things, because "things" are often too complex to be explained by a few messages while you are flying yourself.

The annoying thing is, many many of our young friends insist on getting all they want, and getting it NOW. If the answer is not what they expected, they tend to ignore it (at best), or virtually stomp their feet. They refuse to invest even only 10 mins of reading, but keep asking "HOW TO FLY?" for half an hour. I'm monitoring the help channel a lot in MA, and at least two or three times per day im shuddering with desperation...

Many new "recruits" don't want help - they want someone to do all the work for them.

Like it or not, there is a social pecking order, in here as in real life.  You don't just come into the game squeaking away in caps lock and instantly get the level of respect or audience that a 10+ year player who is well know and acts like an adult gets.  You get treated for the most part the way you deserve.

It might seem mean to tell someone to alt-f4, but it's tradition and almost a right of passage kind of thing when you are new.  When I was new in AW someone, I believe it was AKAK (bastard :lol ) got me with the escape-p trick that got me in my chute after climbing 15k.  At first I was like wtf just happened, then realized and went doh! And laughed it off.  Don't take things too seriously.

There is a way to get respect if you're a newb squeakie type.  Look at TonyJoey.  Great kid, never acts like a spoiled little brat like most of the teens here, works hard on his flying, respects his elders and is just an all around class act.  I have more respect for him than a lot of "vets" who have been here for years and are more than twice his age.

It's not how old you are, it's how you act.

And what Ghosth said.

I think Plawranc forgot that mission is a 4 letter word in Rookland. :rofl :rofl

Staying on topic, I think I still agree with Ghost. There's personal responsibility there. Most times when some one asks a basic question they advise them to see a trainer. Now sometimes they are a little harsh but it's the usual suspects that troll 200 that do this.

Of course I'm no saint here. One new player said he had only one question, How do you bail? Many replied that old worn out line Alt+F4. I told the player no not alt+f4. It's hit enter 3 times and apparently I'm the only one you can trust! But btw alt+f4 is for sunglasses.  :devil

Now I'm going to make a Point here.

Most of the players in this game are from USA right. Now i use MSN talk because its faster easier and worldly recognized. But one thing i cannot stand is Americans lecturing me on proper English. The variation of English in the USA is awful with MOM and COLOR. Rife with spelling mistakes, Mispronunciation and an appalling education system. I have an English background and am Privately educated and i have a remarkable control over the English language.

So please think about what your saying before you correct someone. This is the digital age and the less letters on the text buffer the shorter a message and the faster relay= Improved efficiency.

P.S I'm not trying to Act snobbish I'm stating a fact that just because we are teens doesn't mean we can't spell. Australia's education system is better than it ever was and I get good grades so if I'm using MSN speak its probably because i don't have enough room on the text buffer.

I'd like to make a point - all opinions here are valid - I've seen Plawranc in game a couple of times, on the same side, and whilst I've not interacted with him per se, he seems like one of the good ones, like TonyJoey, Oogly50 etc.

Whilst there is a pecking order, and yes, it does get annoying having to explain things, I try to help with the little I know.

There are those however, you just have to squelch to get a word in edgeways - some of that is the excitement of the game itself, some of it is they dont know when to shush.

We were all young once (I can vaguely recall it).

Now what i mean by the Comment on America is that the correct term is American English not English. The reason for this is America has effected changes to the Dictionary which Reluctantly i agree are easier and make more sense but are nevertheless incorrect.

And in view of Ignorance of the united states almost everysingle thing that's not from china is American and i sometimes have the view that We know more about Your Country than you do.  During the election interviewers form CNN went out and asked teens who they would prefer. And Your statement echoes of a tone of arrogance with "why don't you get a flight Sim from your own country"

Well in case you don't know the headquarters of 20th Century Fox is in SYDNEY!!! so why don't you get an American movie OOPS IS THAT A BIT HARD. You rely on foreign help alot and you never give credit to them. Why your entire pacific military operation would fail if we kicked you out. We are the main base of communications for the US military and also the biggest airbase so Please if you can get people to Acknowledge your allies do so.

And Don't say your wrong my Dad is Ex- Army and he still remembers it because he was a signal officer telling you about the Russians and knew the technical specifications AND was a plane freak watching your aircraft come and go so Please remember. America relies on others more than you know.

You do realize that you're taught proper English so you can use it to communicate with other English speaking individuals clearly and fluently, not just so you can get a meaningless 'A' on a paper, correct?

This is why you're accused of not knowing English. It doesn't matter how well you can type a report, it's that you can use the skills that you learn when typing a report to communicate with people.

This is quite possibly the most frustrating thing I find with people my age.

Sir, it is true that the U.S.A. has some regional dialects which may sound odd to your ear. It is also true that the U.K. has as many or more odd dialects, all in a land area smaller than many American states. Some of which (such as whatever they speak in Yorkshire) could not be made intelligible even if we had Universal Translator device from "Star Trek".

We capitalize "I" and we shouldn't start sentences with "And". How's my education.  :) Although I do start sentences with "And" and I may use the word "I" too much.  Often on these boards folks use slang for de-emphasis. Slang will come across as less harsh or they may use slang to save time.

Australia will never have the might to kick America out.  :aok

Sir, it is true that the U.S.A. has some regional dialects which may sound odd to your ear. It is also true that the U.K. has as many or more odd dialects, all in a land area smaller than many American states. Some of which (such as whatever they speak in Yorkshire) could not be made intelligible even if we had Universal Translator device from "Star Trek".

the translator microbes that they used on John Chriton work better.

I must be one of those weird squeeker noobs that no one likes :(  :uhoh. I would use Tony as a great mature person in the game. Myself on the other hand, I would play it like a game. My voice is so distorted on AH vox, or any camera for that matter, that I don't even sound nearly as close as I would if you talked to me in real person. I really don't understand why my voice gets changed by AH vox, or video cameras, but it does, just have to deal with it.
Anybody ever check the video that I did a wile back on my DO? Did anybody see anybody my age, in front of that spectator fence? That's the thing, I am the only one my age (16-18) that flies in the club. Most of the guys that go to the club are in the ages of 50+, and only a few young kids only ever come to spectate. Yes, I do hang out with old people, and I have some of the greatest mentors, that are not my age. I couldn't even triple my age sometimes, and get the number for some people that I hang out with.
That's what people think. Kids cannot interact with old people, because they have nothing to talk about? No, that is an untrue statement, and I can continually prove that wrong every day. When I join the military on the other hand, I'll be working with my generation of people. As of now though, I talk to you "old guys" all the time.

OK

As long as they are over 18 and act 'normal' and don't talk too much - I'm hanging with them.  The 18 thing is only because I don't want to have to watch what I say..I'm vulgar.

I love this game and to a lesser extent the people in it :) but it seems that no one pays attention. My point im getting across is simple.

I want to have fun. To have fun i shoot people down. Some one makes a funny comment on the country channel. I make a joke about the comment people laugh. Then some one says "you didnt put a comma there or a full stop here and you left out a hyphen etc".

Its all rather annoying.

wat r u doing?

You can understand that can't you? or what about

WTF was tht about?

You can read that.

You see less text more space and more importantly less squeaking.

Oh and LOL Sincraft you can lower that to 15 Because if theyve made it this far without saying the F word 15 times a day They are obviously christian and wouldnt involve themselves in killing other human beings in an electronic war. :)

Don't know about other people but I haven't felt "excluded" at all.  I'm 16 and don't think most people (young or old) have any problems with me.

Plawranc, first off <S> for having an opinion, and believing in yourself enough to stand up for it.
I may disagree with the opinion at times, but never in your right to have it or air it.

Second, come hang out in the TA for an hour or 2 some afternoon, make sure you tune channel 6 the "help" channel. Usually  anytime after 4 till late evening you'll find a bunch on. Some of those will be old vets, some newer guys working on planes, and some brand new dweebs.

Listen for an hour or 2, maybe we will get lucky and you can watch me work.
Or maybe even dance for a bit in Val's.

Believe me, I've had 7 yr olds that I've worked with that I had no problem with.
And I've had 30+ yr old guys that I've booted several times for failure to follow the most basic rules.
Age is NOT the key here, but how you interact with society is.

I've had many friends in the under 18 age over the years.
No discrimination here.

This community is fairly tolerant until you reach the tipping point.
Then its not tolerant at all.  You earn your way here the old fashioned way, one day at a time.
Time will show if you can be trusted, if your someone good to have close in a fight. Or if I  see you taxing on the runway I go find someplace else to fly.  Reputations take time to build, and can be torn down in 2 minutes if your not careful.

Last, bookmark this thread, come back here and read it again after you've been around here for 8 - 10 years.
Then tell me you still see things the same way. :)

Plawranc ,
There's Lots of young Adults / future adults that have a Real interest in history and a love of things that fly and kill ... Its Guys Like Mensa (and the 70+ other young ones I've personally Helped ,Teach, befriend.) That make this a Great Game.

Its all In the attitude you approach your Elders with ...one of my tricks is "Make suggestions , not demands on how to do something."  Can we , could we, but what about this... can and will get you a better education and farther in life then that hacked up ....

Ghosth's post are spot on from what I see this younger crowd thinks they pay 15 dollars instant respect from community should be given.I am sorry but not so in this world or real life as squad CO of 367th 5 years ago 32 of us came to AH from warbirds 2.77 we were the top ranked squad in that game when we left.We came in AH and got whooped
hard.Did we rant no did we scream we were the best no we started on low end of the ladder shut up learned
and took advice from vets of AH.Lotta guys paid dues in hard work and sitting on thier fingers by not typing
every single fact of the game .If you for 1 moment think these guys are gonna give respect by crying good luck.best advice I could give to anyone new no matter what age sit on your fingers when mad listen and learn
from these old guys and soon the respect your looking for will follow.

This post made me rememeber a long time ago when I was a knit. Some guys were giving a kid a hard time mainly b/c he was just freaking annoying and didn't show anybody respect. Well, the kid apparently got his feelings hurt and went crying to his mom, so his mom gets on and tries to defend him. However the kid did not tell the mom why the guys were giving him a hard time. When the players started telling her what her son was doing she said she was going to cancel his account. I don't know if she ever did, but that was just hilarious.
