Ive been building on and off since I was a kid. Never really stopped entirely but let it sit for a few years due to divorce, etc. Ive gotten back into it with a vengeance :) Anyone else build here? I know Ive seen a lot of RC posts ( would love to try that when money/time allows ) but dont recall seeing much in the way of scale models. Here is some of my recent pics -

Goofed on this one. Built it with drops, then decided on going with Thatchs Midway ride....but there were no drops at the time of Midway! Doh!

There is a good section of models being posted from time to time over at the Flame Warriors site. Those are pretty nice ones that you have done there. I have several just sitting in the boxes that I will get to work on some day.

Good Job, Looks great! :aok
-
Nice work! I still have models from when I was a teen that i never built.
-
Very nice paint work, espescially the wildcat. They look better roughed up a little. :aok
I had a bunch of 1/48 scale birds (the B-29 with teh NOOK!) and many ships. I even had a 1/350 scale Yamato (It was like 3 feet long!) which cost $100 or so back in the early '80s. But like a tard, I blew them all up. :cry
If I ever get married, I hope I get divorced, so I too can take up the hobby again. :D

This was my main passion when I was younger, but life and failing eyesight have put a real damper on me building anymore kits. Real shame, because I used to be pretty good at it.
Savlan, our paranoid firewall here at work won't let me see your work, so I'll have to ask. How did you do the natural metal finish on Tommy's plane? I used to airbrush metallic paints, and even remember using aluminum foil, spray adhesive, and an Xacto (on a 1/32 F-104. That sucker was big ). What method did you use?

I know these aren't plastic models but...

Lay off!! I used to trim parts with a sharp piece of flint myself. :D

Makes me want to get back into building models again! Haven't built any since I was a kid.
I'll have to look around to see if there are any modeling stores or hobby stores around here and start up again

I've got a resin 1/32 cockpit for an F4U I keep meaning to start. Need to get the engine (looking at the Vector Scale early-type R-28) and the F4U to put them IN. Planning to go all-out on it. Custom plumbing, etc.

I remember Airfix used to be probably the best plastic kit makers in 1/72 scale. Hagaya (?) was another good maker.
Tamiya was really good for 1/35 vehicles....Tamiya Mokei sucked however..
so like....what manufacturers are out there?
And in a related note....where's that thread with the dude that made that Stg III?

Both the P-51 & the P-38 were done with Alclad, http://www.alclad2.com/lacquer_colors.html (http://www.alclad2.com/lacquer_colors.html) a lacquer based airbrush paint brand that specializes in producing various metal finishes. It will do a various shades of aluminum, steel, and even chrome. The chrome paint is amazing, it actually looks better than any plated plastic model part. You can get it online at greatmodels.com.
Lay down a base acrylic coat to protect the plastic from the bite of the lacquer. Then hit the model with black lacquer as a base. Then the metal paint on top. I built the 51 first, and liked the dull aluminum look. But I wanted the 38 to look more reflective, as Ive seen in old color photos under the pacific sun.....so I did it in chrome. Once I layered on some clear and did my weathering & washes, it toned down the chrome so that it looks like polished aluminum. I like the effect. You can go crazy and paint individual panels, giving it the patchwork quilt look....but I think its a little busy looking for a 1/48 model.
Feel free to ask any questions, thanks for looking :)

Tamiya & Hasegawa pretty much rule 1/72. Tamiya does great 1/48, Hasegawa too. Airfix has been left behind, sadly. The detail dosnt compare to the Japanese kits, but Airfix does have the best range of aircraft out there.

I visit the Hyperscale modeling forum every day Sav,
The work some of the folks do there is amazing.

You've wounded me to my heart Iliza.

I have been looking around on the web and I was wanting ya'lls opinion on what brand of models is a good one to get back into it. I want to start off with WWII aircraft but, i also would like to do some WWII ships.
I remember building a battleship with my uncle when I was a teenager ( Iowa class) I dont remember the scale but it was over 6ft long when done and very detailed. i'll dig around in the attic to see if I still have any pics of it.

Image heavy web site of a Stug III (I found it)
http://www.thelostbattalion.be/stug.html
Unbeleivable piece of work.

Wow, really nice find there. Nice models, I ahvent done any for along time, but I used to really enjoy the ships. Then I got into RC boats, and got hooked on real sailing. Now I have to be indoors for awhile, I might go get one. As long as it doesnt interfer with AH. :D

I like to imagine I still build models. I even buy some from time to time. The last was a Revell Lancaster. I'm currently supposedly building a Tamiya Panther, an Airfix Severn class Lifeboat in the markings of my local lifeboat station, and a model soldier, French Officer, 1870. Which pretty much covers quite a range.
But I have to say, the internet has basically spoiled my enthusiasm. The standard of models on the net and in this thread is so high that with my perfectionist standards. I can't compete. But it's all about having fun, so I continue.
That link to the Stug III model is interesting. It's a fabulous model. But why oh, why is he going to put that silly unrealistic camo net on his work? He's spoiling it.

Unless things have changed, the Airfix molds are really dated. You can't go wrong with Hasegawa for aircraft, and Italeri out of Italy used to make some great kits as well.
Savlan, you might be interested in some of the kits I've squirreled away over the years. Most in 1/72, but some interesting stuff. Me-323, BV-138, etc. Somewhere, I've got a Hasegawa Me-262 in 1/32, but I can't find the thing.
BTW, you old guys remember when the Monogram B-52D only cost $10???

Anybody comes across an IAR-80/81 that's not resin, could you let me know? Pretty please? :pray
-
I always liked building the 1/72 scale. Guess because I can get more on my shelf. :D For that scale, Academy makes a nice model. Must say though that the Hasegawa brand has been the best. The fit is exceptional. Will try to post pics later after work.
-
I have a ton of 1/72 as well...I should build more of em as they do build quicker usually. They make for nice displays without all the resin & photoetch . Last good 1/72 I did was a while ago...heres some lo res pics of a Hermann Graf 109

Cthulhu, you are right, Airfix has old molds...I havnt bought one in years. I did forget about Academy, they make a real nice kit for the money.
Trieze, nice work! What fiction is that from? Gundam? Warhammer? My son has lots of figures like that.
Dan, I always lurk at hyperscale...do you post there? Whats your name there if you do?

Here's a few pics of the ones on my shelf now. Never had the patience for weathering on a 1/72 scale.

The one I posted is a Zaku from the original Gundam series, but that one was unfortunately destroyed (box it was in got crushed, several models inside didn't survive). I'm working a new one right now that will hopefully be weathered better, that one didn't come out the way I'd envisioned at all.
I'm also looking for a couple of 1/32 Bf-109Gs to buy, I just got a pair of decal and resin sets for Rumanian ones, including a conversion kit to turn a G6 into a Ga6. :)
