Title: AlacrityPC
Post by: oakranger on February 28, 2009, 03:43:40 PM
I have just install AlacrityPC and need some assistanceon what i should have as "stop then Restart" and "Nothing" on services and programs.  I used Blackvipor.com but still not sure how to look at this.  I have Window Vista (32-bit)  Is there anybody that can assist me?

I use Alacrity as well - good tool for squeezing a little extra out of what you have.

When I configured Alacrity I just used the settings that Alacrity suggested - look in the lower left hand of the window with a service or program selected on the Services or programs tab.

I agree with BluTrain, just use the default settings profile.  I use the program on my old Win XP Pro Prescott-based machine, and it helps me wring a few more FPS out of the old girl.

I've only used Glary Utility.

oakranger is mostly asking about services (those background processes that Vista has so many of). So if any of you have gone to blackviper.com and learned anything about Vista thats what he wants to know. I think the list is a little overwhelming and technical for not just oak but a lot of people so starting this thread isnt such a bad idea.

Oakranger I went down the entire list of processes I have on my system and shut down the ones I thought I could do without. I used not only what Alacrity could tell me but also what I could learn on each process at blackviper.com and I did this by looking up the name of the process on Google. If I had a process that blackviper didnt list I always found something on Google about it. I went down the list of processes running on my system which you can see by using the start button and then right clicking on 'Computer' and then choosing 'Manage.' Expand out the list of 'Services and Applications' and then click on 'Services.'

Every system is different because of the devices and programs installed to that system so you will have to do this specifically for your system.

On Alacrity I have the following set as 'Stop and Restart' for Services and Program tabs:

I think you can easily see that you wont have the same stuff loaded or running.

Thanks for posting those screens Challenge - your first one illustrates my point perfectly - If the OP will look in the lower left hand corner the application gives a RECOMENDATION as to what to do with the service.  This is pretty much what I followed when I set up my machine...Pretty sure it does this with running programs as well. Once you've got a good baseline config use google or a site like blackviper as Challenge suggests to optimize your "profile"

For further reference a brief tutorial that I wrote can be found HERE (http://cid-bdd163976a999534.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Public)

BTW - I'd appreciate any feed back on the tutorial as I wrote it very quickly

Thanks Masherbrum - I'll have to check out Glary...
