Title: Specs to run 1024 textures hi res
Post by: Wobbly on March 02, 2009, 11:24:05 AM
Hi I currently run an ancient AMD XP3000 2.1 ghz/2GB ram/6800GT 128mb/XP home, which runs 512 textures sweet, no complaints.

I have the opportunity to buy a mates rig for a good price, which is an E6600 on a ASUS mobo/2GB of 667/XP Pro 64 bit, and I will buy an second hand 8800GT or GTX off Fleabay and a PCI sound card (or stick my audigy 4 in).

Price all in will be less than half of what it would cost for a new system with an E8500/9800GTX

Question is, Will this run 1024 textures OK maxed out?

Benefit to me is price, and the fact that the case looks like the one I have already and "she who must be obeyed" wont notice the difference (I hope)  :uhoh

thanks

I have an 8800GT coupled with a Q6600 and it runs AH buttery smooth, even with 1024 res and 16x AA.

I run an OC'd E6400 @ 2.66ghz (which is faster than the 2.4ghz E6600 you're looking at), 4gb of 667 DDR2, and a 8800GTS 640mb.  I run full 1024 textures, 8x AA, at 1680x1050 resolution.  Full 60fps.

Hi I currently run an ancient AMD XP3000 2.1 ghz/2GB ram/6800GT 128mb/XP home, which runs 512 textures sweet, no complaints.

my old Athlon XP 2800 with Ati9800pro 128meg AGPcard and 1 gig ram and older antec trupower II 550watt PSU with 2 120 gig SATA HD's in RAID 1 setup, ran AH with 1024 textures and skins pretty good itself @ 45 to 55 fps consistently unless you was in a scenario and had 30+ planes around...... ( it still runs it, now that I sit here and think about it )
( videocard was eventually upgraded to an Ati X800/850X 256 Meg AGP, which helped it run at max monitor refresh of 70 )

key is to have minimal processes running , the old 2800 never has more than 20/21 processes running max......winXPpro sp2

just saying.....

E6300 (1.86GHz) overclocked slightly to 2.03GHz.  7900GS PCIe video in a 4X only slot.  2GB 533 RAM.  I run 1680X1050 with 4XAA enabled, hi-res with all settings maxed.  I also have software for my headphones and for my TrackIR running in the background (although I do disable AV).

I usually see 65-75FPS (capped at 75) with occasional drops to MAYBE 50.

I don't think you'll have any problems!

Thanks for the input guys

Well I downloaded the hi res pack on my existing system, changed textures to 1024 so it built the cache (took ages) and tbh, I cant see any difference in the landscape and buildings over 512mb?

Whats the difference I am looking for?

get yourself an up to date cockpit model with a decent skin,

then look out to your left or right wing and examine the rivets on the wing,  you should be able to see more detail,

what AA setting are you running?  that makes the most difference on objects.  4x  should be enough.

No idea about AA Bruv, probably low if anything

So, the hi res is more the planes and tanks etc rather than the scenery?

aa = anti aliasing,   it isn't an in game setting,

if you have a nvidia card the control panel should have some settings that allow you to turn this on, typically  2, 4x , 8x , 16x etc.  Mine runs on 16x but there is little noticeable difference between 4x and 16x but alot of difference between none and 4x  IMO,  this will test out your frame rates,

If you can't find the graphics setting in the control panel and you play more than just aces high it may be worthwhile getting a program like nhancher that will save graphic settings for specific game exe's.

What AA does is smooth the edges, hangars, cockpit curves, buildings etc.  the 1024 res is the level of detail/pixels per square.

this is the official word on it

I tried searching for a thread that had in game screenshots of the differences between   the 256, 512, 1024 resolutions and AA comparison,

I would get some examples myself but as you know the plane cache is a biatch  :D

after reading waffles post he is trying to say don't turn this stuff on if your machine is pants.
