Title: Rudder drag
Post by: Gie on June 07, 2000, 06:28:00 AM
Hi,
to start fleme, must say RUDDER DRAG IS WAY TOO BIG.
Full rudder input can drop fighter speed from 450mph to 300 mph in ~10 sec .

Such drag force should cut plane tail off for sure.
On the ground, rudder is far more effective than wheel brakes to stop aircraft.

Is it realistic ? Or "Advanced flight modeling" ?

I agree,

Maybe it's a substitute for the lack of prop drag??

Well are you talking drag from just the rudder deflection or slipping? Especially in the f4u, if you jam rudder full to one dorection and roll in the opposite direction you are slipping alot and you should slow down quite quickly I would think.

Yeah it's not the rudder that's causing it, it's the fuselage I think.

yup its the fuselage

think of the rudder as working like a trim tab compared to the fuselage.

Have you tried this in real life? I have, although in a glider rather than a Hog, but it slows you down mighty quick, faster than airbrakes for sure.
