Title: An option for separate enemy icon colors in AHFV
Post by: moot on March 04, 2009, 05:23:51 PM
Like it says on the tin.. An option to have different colors for enemy countries.

Can't you see the little chess piece in the red square?

Is that the best reason you can find to reject an option that'd enhance the AHFV's purpose, analysis, at no cost to any of the app's other features?

I'm not rejecting it.  I almost even gave it a  :aok in my original post.  I really just don't think it's that big a deal.  Red is bad, Green is good.  I usually don't even notice unless two red planes seem intent on killing each other.

It's a lovely wish.

Not just icons but trails would be nice too.  :aok

This might go against m00ts argument of very little work needing to be done to to make it so you can have your enemies 2 shades of red :D

I don't mean to sound snotty (now that I read it again), I'm just wondering if that's the worst argument against this idea.  Trail colors varying with speed/throttle/Gs/whatever or with enemy country could be another option.

It is a big deal actually.  In a 3 country engagement, your strategy can be dictated based upon which enemies are which.  With everything red, it's too difficult to keep track of who is who.  Color is the first thing your brain notices, then plane model, then country.  I'd be nice to come into a fight and see who is who immediately and then be able to form my plan of attack.

I don't expect it in the game.  In the film viewer it'd be nice though.

Why not both?  The information is already given in the chess piece picture.  It would be better to not have to focus on the icon so intently to know what is going on.   Inspecting a multi-plane engagement with each chess piece a different color could be assessed 10 times as fast than it is right now.  All you see now is a fluff of red, can't really tell exactly what is going on.

Why not in the game?  Because I have a hunch that that's against HTC's vision of the game.  If I had to guess why, I'd say it's a good analog to fog of war. The only known substance in war is friendlies. You find out about the enemy by elimination, the same way that in AH you know a contact is enemy when it doesn't match any friendly radar dot.

If this were true, they wouldn't tell you the chess piece on the side of the icon.  They should present the information they already give you in a more efficient manner e.g. color distinction

It is true, it's just a compromise to keep it like it was in reality. You had to really look carefully to tell what was what in the middle of action. At a glance, the only thing for sure was that any given unit wasn't from Kansas.

I think it is a great idea for the film viewer, as far as in game let the mystery remain! :aok

I think reality went out the window when you are able to see a dot 6k ago is an enemy AND what type of model it is.   :)

Apparently not.. I haven't been in the cockpit myself, but pretty much every comment I've heard from people who have is that you can.  If friendlies are ordered (and they would be in a time of war) as everything is in the armed forces, it won't be hard to spot pretty much anything that's amiss and tag like as enemy.

I doubt any pilot could tell the difference between a Bf109 and an Fw190 more than 6000 yards away (more than 3 miles).

Ultimately this is a game and realism typically takes a backseat to game play in a multitude of different ways.  For example, F3 mode, auto takeoff, turreting aircraft in GVs, etc.  But anyways, agree to disagree... my 2c.

I'm not arguing it myself, just pointing out the second hand data points I have for that one so far.  Though I think external views for bombers are realistic, considering the number of eyes looking out of it, and on the ground for fighters as well if you consider the ATC feeding you info on the radio.  Auto takeoff and GV optics (and the head position allowed to be out of the M8's turret) and combat trim, generic engine overheat/wep system, instant GV repair, etc are gamey yep.  But overall I think it's very well done. There's a minimal degradation of realistic combat mechanics that everything would boild down to if the game were real, for a lot of boring micromanagement removed.
