I know this isn't that big of a deal for most of you, but for me, I nearly exploded. I finally got my first real step toward an Academy. The Air Force Academy is my first choice, but the Naval academy is my fall-back. I have yet to receive a response from the Air Force, but I had this e-mail waiting for me when I got home today:
"Dear Andrew Dinmore,
I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected to attend Session 1 of the Naval Academy Summer Seminar!
The purpose of this e-mail is to personally and promptly inform you of your acceptance and to allow the maximum amount of time for you to prepare for your trip to Annapolis. No reply to this e-mail is necessary. I will be sending you a registration packet containing more detailed program information from our offices shortly.
I look forward to seeing you on “The Yard” this summer!
Session 1: May 30th – June 4th
Session 2: June 6th – 11th
Session 3: June 13th – 18th
Very Respectfully,
John W.D. Meise
Lieutenant, United States Navy
Officer-In-Charge, NASS"
Like I said, I'm sure it's not much to most of you, but I'm damned sure proud of it!
-
That's awesome, congrats
-
Congrats
-
Congrats and best wishes in which ever direction you take.
-
The Navy has been very good to my friends and family that have served their time with them. Congradulations, I wish you the best. :salute
-
Grats man!
-
Congratulations man. You should be proud to be considered for the Academy.
-
I personally wouldn't have considered any of the service academy schools as a "fall back". I really wanted to get into USMA when I was in high school but the only one that even responded was USNA and I blew it off. They wanted me to come play football for them but I wanted to go to play and attend USMA (at that time Army was a pretty good football team in the late 80's and early 90's).
So just one small bit of advice from someone who should have but didn't...don't consider any of them as a fall back. First rate education will be received from all of them IF you go.

Thanks. By fall-back, I meant I really want to join the Air Force. I'm a closet-case carrier dweeb though, so I would be MORE than happy flying for the Navy. And if I don't hear back from USAFA, I'm going for Annapolis. :D
-
Good for you Serenity.
-
Congrats! :)
-
Don't forget that you can still receive an Air Force Commission even if you graduate from USNA (not sure why you would want too tho :devil)
If requested and approved, any graduate from one of the Service Academy's can receive a commission into the service of their choice.
Congrats and goodluck

Congrats Serenity.. Take it and forget about them girly men in the airforce :aok

Congrats, I will be saluting you soon. If you go into aviation and fly helicopters you'll come to my squadron (HSC-2) to get your final quals. Just ask around in the Avionics shop for the kid who went to Afghanistan

Congrats Serenity,
Just remember, even though you go to the Naval academy, the Navy isn't your final stop. Become a real man and put the distinguished Eagle Anchor Globe on your lapel and become a Marine Officer.

lol. My Marine buddies have been saying the same thing, but I'll be the first to tell you Im not tough enough for their PT...
-
That's all great and well, but with the military retraining a navy officer to guard a stack of food with a rifle, it makes you kinda wounder what the point of joining any one branch is.
Congrats tho! :salute :aok, lets just hope 5 years down the line they don't train you like a marine and send you to "take" some land from the "enemy" when everything says your butt should be out on some ocean someplace, far far from a ground war.
Something is very very wrong with that, but ill let you see it for yourself and report back to us.
Regardless of it all, a BIG :salute to you and everyone like you.

Thanks! If I get my way though, the only time I will see the enemy is from a comfy cockpit 10,000ft above the ground :)

Nice. Thinking FA-18E/F/Gs, E-2s or something more towards rotary? If you go with the Super Hornet then you'll likely end up out here in California at Lemoore NAS, I try to make their bi-annual airshow religiously and have a friend who was an AE (avionics/aviation electrician) with (I think) VFA-147 back when they flew FA-18Cs.

I think I would like an FA-18. I'm not much for the F-35, and I REALLY like the idea of having a RIO. Two heads are better than one in the air, and I like flying with someone else. Gives me someone to talk to :D

WTG congrats

<<< Im a AE. Or he could go P-3s and never see a carrier. :aok The Navy is currently moving most of its rotary squadrons in Florida to Norfolk where Im normally stationed. Or he could fly rotary out of Coronado in San Diego, and as a officer that is the place to be.

I have a buddy who flew P-3s with VPT-47 or something like that out of K-Bay. I laughed every time he got sent to Iraq...

Yeah, forums working!
Then you'll be wanting to be a F/A-18F driver, the F/A-18E is the one-seater Super Hornet (slightly less internal fuel on the two-seat varient I think).
Serenity, if you want a new ride that might interest you, but you'd have to talk to someone in the Navy to find out how to get there: Checkout the new F/A-18G Growlers ( http://www.boeing.com/defense-space/military/ea18g/index.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EA-18G_Growler ) It's replacing the older electronic warfare EA-6B Prowlers. It's a F/A-18F (two-seat super hornet) where you'll always be flying around with a guy in the back that knows everything that's going on around you. They're supposed to start equiping operational squads with them this year, so you might be lucky enough to jump aboard something there if you can.

Ooh! Do they actually fight? Or is it just ECM/ECCM work?
-
Only what I've read in those articles...
The Growler has more than 90% in common with the standard Super Hornet, sharing airframe, AESA radar and weapon systems such as the AN/AYK-22 Stores Management System. Most of the dedicated airborne electronic attack equipment is mounted in the space that used to house the internal 20 mm cannon and on the wingtips. Nine weapons stations remain free to provide for additional weapons or jamming pods. The added electronics include AN/ALQ-218 wideband receivers on the wingtips, and ALQ-99 high and low-band tactical jamming pods. The ALQ-218 combined with the ALQ-99 form a full spectrum electronic warfare suite that is able to provide detection and jamming against all known surface-to-air threats.[16]
The EA-18G can be fitted with up to five ALQ-99 jamming pods and will typically add two AIM-120 self-defense missiles and two AGM-88 High Speed Anti-Radiation (HARM) missiles. The EA-18G will also use the INCANS Interference Cancellation system that will allow voice communication while jamming enemy communications, a capability not available on the EA-6B.
So it sounds like no 20mm and 2/5 your normal hornet loadout, and bad news for anything not friendly flying near you.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew! NICE!

Duke, when I was at USMA in '98 I was thinking of a branch transfer but was told it had to be requested and approved AND a cadet from the branch you were wishing to tranfer to had to be requesting a tranfer to your branch, i.e. If I was to get an Air Force commission there had to be a USAFA cadet requesting an Army commision.
'Course it was all moot because I left because I was young and dumb.....still regret it every day of my life. :frown:

Congrats! I have family going into the AFA, it's a race to see who can get into a jet first. I'm 3 years of education ahead though :) . Maybe we will see each other around eventually.

How is Camp Foster these days?
Serenity--I applied to the USNA back when I was in High School--got nominations but didn't get an appointment. Regardless, I got to where I wanted through NROTC. Anyway, you go to Annapolis and take the Marine aviation route. If you can get an appointment to Navy, you can handle the Marine Corps physically. Marines aren't super-human, simply normal men that over-achieve. I have to keep telling you to forget the Air Force--perhaps one of these days you'll listen to me.

That... or an F/A-18F "accidently" signed over and delivered to my house. :noid

lol. I'll be the idiot who suggest the next Super-Carrier...
USS Graf Zeppelin!!! lol.
Got my letter from the AFA today. Denied for summer seminar. Not surprising though, as I submitted my application only hours before the deadline.

Serenity, I went to NAF El Centro this Saturday and was surprised to not find one F/A-18 Super Hornet... but three (and all two-seat Fs!... I think they're in your head Serenity). Two were off to the side standing by with the pilots, crews and everything, just chillin, watching the Airshow, their planes were all powered up and ready to go though. I wish you were there so you could distract... err go chat them up while I maybe poked around the cockpit a little. The third was on display and you could walk up to it as close as you wanted (you better believe I spent some quality time drueling on that one).
I was disapointed that they didn't get to fly them for a demonstration (like they were supposed to :furious )... but they had a really long Blue Angels chunk with plenty of F-18 goodness to be had at the end. The USMC also brought in a F/A-18C and a Harrier that I got a couple shots of.
Pics and vids from the day here: http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,260665.0.html
I was disapointed that there wasn't an E or G Super Hornet (and I know they recently had some Gs around too, see the video links in the thread I linked above), but I'm glad they had what they had.

Just a question for anyone in the know. What is the deployment/leave cycle like for carrier pilots? It's 6 months at sea, and then what? How long are you home and what do you and your bird do while you're there?
-
6-7 months out, somewhere between 12-18 months back, or more. At this point, don't sweat it. Just don't get married in between the day you get commissioned and the end of your first sea tour so you can enjoy the local scenery on port visits. ;)
After you've had time to appreciate foreign liberty, then you can think about getting married and having kids. O-3/O-4 is a good rank for "Intro to Family 101"...

That's not really my worry. Ash knows (As harsh as this is) if she makes me pick between her and any military branch, she's getting the boot. I was just curious what a pilot and his bird do on shore.

Fly. Lots of training on a daily basis. Lots of qualifications to earn and to keep up to date. Ultimately, look cool and pick up chicks while wearing your bag in the O Club, to the chagrin of all the non-bag wearing guys at the bar.
There are a couple of military pilots that play this game. Mace is a Navy Pilot I believe, and Toonces3 used to fly P-3s. If you ask around you can probably find some others.

Thats awesome Serenity, Annapolis is a very interesting place you will have fun if you plan on going, it will be hard though to get a fighter pilot spot though unless you are very sqaured away. Really consider this offer, if you become a pilot you will end up commanding a Carrier if you stick with the job.
