Title: Group Black Out : B17
Post by: loser111 on December 23, 2000, 11:24:00 AM
This post will deal with the ever-so-annoying group black out in bombers after the pilot is "wounded".
Im sure this has been dealt with, but i havent seen a pot on it yet, so here we go.
I feel that the "pilot wounded" group black out in B17's or other buffs is a serious gameplay fault for any players who fly buff like i do up to 90% of the time.
There is nothing worse than, after the pilot becoming wounded (most likely after being hit by a "JFK" bullet that ricocheted through the entire plane after being fired from a fighter that fired no where near the cockpit,)than having your entire crew periodically black-out.
But this is not all talk and whining my friends, i feel there are some valid points to why there should be some serious effort applied to this problem.  First, in a B17, there would obviously be a co-pilot.  And unless he too recieved a seperate wound, or maybe was an identical twin and had those weird sympathy pains, he could effectively pilot the plane.  Thus eliminating the "pilot wounded" effect.  I would have nothing against a seperate "co-pilot wounded" thingy in the damage display, as long as he actually recieved an individual gift wrapped round himself.  Secondly i think it compounds damage to the plane having gunners black out along with the pilot.  There are already damage indicators such as "ball turret", "tail gunner" etc.  So not only do yoy have to deal with individual deaths, woundings, etc of each gunner but you have to deal with them blacking out as well.  An yes, i am aware that the guns esp. top turret and ball turret could recieve mechanical damage as a result of being fired upon.
I closing, i realize that many people feel that the guns are already too powerful on the b17 and we deserve to have to deal with group blackouts.  Well i have to disagree and have many experinces of having a 3 or 4 plus kill sortie only to be wasted by some plane lumbering in on my 6 and picking me off because my tail gunner had blacked out at an ever-so inconvenient time.

You present a good argument.  I have nights when I drive only bombers/goonies since we have a zillion fighter pilots, and as you know, the secret to the game isnt in how many baddies you shoot down, but if your bombers get in and cap the turf!

Last night I had a few times where I was damaged by flak at 29k and got the "pilot wounded" damage.  Meanwhile I was in the bombsight and that was blacking out too.  And the tail gunner was fending off a P51 and, you guessed it, he passes out too.

I don't remember the crew compliment of the B-17 was but if you have 2 pilots, a Navigator and 3 or 4 gunners, the damage should accurately reflect that.  Maybe its just a goof in the damage model, since everything else (damage-wise) works really well in Aces.

I second your motion.

I would have no problem with this if the gun effectivness was "pulled in abit" I.E. the "original" reason for longer buff gun effectivness was to reduce the "lag" effect present in the game, but I think we missed the mark with the 1.2 K range I feel a 900 to 800 yard effective range would better depict the gun range and also account for the net lag which would on the attackers FE look like 500 yrd to 400 yrds (this of course should also be coincident with a "shortening of the hispano effective range)

PS Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night

What the HECK kinda flak was that:??? I can usually escape flak at 10k, but 29k thats friggin rediculious!!!

I fly bombers (mainly b17) because I use a mouse, and until i can get a joystick im forced to bomb fields and use tanks (and soon, god graced me, boats), and I do agree with loser11. I remember one night i got 'wounded' and i was flying around in cockpit view blacking out having a good ole time trying to land that sucker.

n1k comes up behind me, and i switch to top turret and what happens? I have about 10 second blackout and i die. I was really confused

Each turret\position should have its own blackout indicators
