Title: Vote for the RAF plane!! Note:pictures inside....
Post by: mx22 on June 09, 2000, 10:41:00 AM
What can I say? Pictures say it all (and don't say I didn't warn about images)...

here is one flown by polish unit:

and the last one:

For all the LW flier and other guys who don't know what that plane is; it's Spitfire Mk.XIV   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Hahahha,
Mk.XVI is nothing more then Mk.IX with licence built Merlin engine. Even if the guy who took picture is wrong (which I doubt), that Spitfire has Griffon engine so it should be one of latewar or postwar Spitfire models.

The Spits in the 1st post appear to be MkXVIs (note the 4 bladed props and lack of cowling bulges for a larger Griffon engine).

The Spit in the 3rd post is definately a Griffon engined Spit (5 bladed prop and cowling bulges).  Whether or not the photo is labeled correctly I don't know.  So for now lets take the Spit in the 3rd post as a Spitfire LF MkXIV.

MV293 is certainly a Mk XIV. It is at least as old as July 1944.

Btw: The Mk XVI at the back of the top photo, RW382(NG O C) was in the BoB movie.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Yep first picture is not 14. Was labeled as Spit14 though, don't know why...
Note, Polish plane from museum too has 4 bladed prop, but engine cover looks like the one from Griffon powered plane. When I get home, I'll look in the book what version it might have been.
In any case,  since I'm at work and can't use pictures from my collection, I just did found what I could on the web and posted right away. Next time, I'll take more time looking at what I'm posting.
I still want XIV in AH though (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

mx22,
The bulges on that plane are the much smaller bulges of a Merlin engine.

Funked,
Problem with the XVI is that its performance isn't any different from the IX.

I'd think the LF Mk. XVI would be faster on the deck than an F Mk. IX with Merlin 61, no?

Slightly maybe.  It'll have a better roll rate and climb rate down low, but above 4,000 feet it'll suffer greatly.

I don't know about others, but I spend much of my time above 4,000 feet.

Funked,

Did you eat something bad tonight? Or maybe smoked something? Are you asking for the XVI instead of XIV???
Don't do this to me man, or I'll open second account just to hunt for you (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Seriosuly why to settle for a bit of difference between IX and XVI, when HTC can spend about that much time, or a bit longer, and come up with XIV which is way better then XVI/IX and will finally give us a ride that can give trouble to LW boys. XVI should be kept until later on when AH has many planes and there will be some interest in getting all those not so much different modifications.

To do it right, imo:

1. Remove E wing and rockets from current Mk IX.

2. Add Mk XVI with E wing, rocket stubs, rear fuselage fuel tanks, teardrop canopy and clipped wingtips. Maybe have it run on 150 octane fuel.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

A Merlin 66 Spitfire would be faster than a Merlin 61 up to 20k, and a bit over that I think. Eg: At 20k the M66 is at ~405mph, the M61 is at ~380mph.

Give us the real RAF workhorse...The Hurricane!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

A Hurricane IIC would be nice. All they have to do is make a hurricane and take the guns from the HOG-1C and it's finished! Really though, the Hurricane IIC would be great for busting Armor (As it actually did). It flys slow enough to line up on the target, and unlike the tiffy, the flight control surfaces control it instead of the prop  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

If you wanna give me a Spit Mk V Tropical variant with 4 cannons and clipped wings, I'll settle for that  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

However, I don't think we will see a Griffon engined Spit as a regular in here. I think it will be one of the `perk' planes. Although having that spit in here with that 5 bladed prop would be a blast to drive.

I also want to place a vote for a Beaufighter and a Mossie. Since AH leans towards late war types more then early war variants, we will probably see the Mossie first. Who needs an A-26 when you can have a Mossie FB Mk VI!

Sundog, don't be silly.  A single A-26B carries the firepower of two puny Mosquitos.    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I agree about the Typhoon.  The throttle is more effective for steering than the stick!   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Well if we're talking forward firing guns rather than bomb load, the Mossie has 4 20mm and 4 .303s. If 1x 20mm = 3x .5, and 2x .303s = 1x .5, then forward firepower of Mossie = 14x .5   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Of course, if you're going to add in ammo load and bomb load I'd better shut up.

As to the Tempest II, it depends how you classify it. The first production model was completed in Oct 44, and nearly 200 had been made by the end of the war. If that had been a Luftwaffe plane it would have been in service by Jan45.

The Spit XIV is painted all silver in 2 sqn markings. Does anyone know if this colour scheme was used during the war or only post war?
