Title: The winds of change.....
Post by: SEraider on March 09, 2009, 01:21:51 PM
The other night Trotter and I dualed.  He's a good guy to dual and to converse with btw guys.  :salute

A conversation came up where some felt the game has changed.  Other than terrain and base modifications, my opinion that the game overall as a stregnth of the community is about the same.  I thought long and hard about this.

I think as some of us actually train and work to get better in this game, it may appear that the community is getting weaker so perhaps we should not think it has changed.  The game will always have its hotards and dweebs, but overall I am happy with this game.

Some vets who quit the game I get the sense they could not get better, plateaued, or got so good it was no longer a challenge.  That is perhaps true.  I seen Gods among men in the DA stop logging in because of this I would suspect.

What do you guys think?

D, in all honesty... I'll just throw the question out there.

Do you think that the community, and in tandem with same the quality of the gameplay, has deteriorated from what it was 10 years ago or, by contrast, do you feel as though no substantial change has been realized?

In an effort to avoid misunderstanding, 'gameplay' is exclusive of 'the game.'

Catch-22, I know.  You are concerned that you might be shooting yourself in the foot with your answer, but I think that many of us who grew up playing the games you had a hand in creating would be appreciative of your input.

Thanks.

I'm overall satisfied with the game.  While MA gameplay can be lame at times, overall, I am able to find what I am looking for.  The Dueling Arena needs a dramatic overhaul though.  I think some people fly exclusively at furball lake because of MA frame rate issues and that is their way of getting fights.  You can't blame them for that.  But most DA'ers have no intention of finding fair fights or 'dueling'.  The DA squads aren't even in the Squad Dueling League.  Here's the simplest solution:

Disabling "Name in the Lights" messages in the DA to shift people's incentives from getting pats on the back to getting respect from their opponent after a good fight.  I think players would lose their incentive to fly perk planes, pick from above, and avoid ACM.  If you pick and land 8 kills, no one else will see what you 'accomplished'.  Your opponents that you cherry picked aren't going to salute you and no one else will know you landed kills.  It will become pointless very fast to fly like this.

The dueling arena has turned into a mini main arena for a lot of pilots and I don't think this is in the vision of what the Dueling Arena should represent. The pilots that care about name in the lights can migrate to the main arena where anything goes there.  I think a pure dueling arena is key for players to become better pilots fast.  Skilllessness in the MA and the current state of the dueling arena do have a correlation.

This is a good idea for all arenas.

Hey Raider

Yeah I think you are right on the money with this. Even though I have only been here for a couple  years I was with Air Warrior for quite a long time. I have also been involved in several other online mass player games for many years each. Your observations here in AHII translate to pretty much any mass player base online game.

At my age I can make the observation that Human Nature is Human Nature and as long as these games are played by People they will pretty much progress the same way. That is until Humans evolve to some other state. However looking at the Phylogenetic Tree I think it will still be quite some time before that will happen.

I do think that the majority of the players try to improve their skills in various areas in various ways. We all have preferences in which we want to do that. So I believe that each of us perceive it a bit differently depending on where we are looking from. I believe the the part of the community that may seem troublesome from time to time is relatively small as is pretty typical for all things. They just get noticed more easily because they are in your face and cause a distinct and quick impression that is lasting.

For me I can see some improvement in my skills in various areas. Not huge but enough that I can see. However I do try to learn as I go so that my frustration level will drop as my enjoyment level increases with success.

So my opinion is that I dont believe that this or any game is really changing, just our perception at unique points of time may make it seem that way.

But like with any vacuum cleaner or automobile, "Your results may vary"

Later,
KayBay

PS: Raider how do I get our Squad Logo in as my Avatar???

that'd be irrelevant to me. on the occasion i get to actually land in controlled flight, i don't generally have numerous kills, as some do.

it is a good idea though. it would promote fights...i think.

I like name in the lights in the MA.  I think it should be raised to 3 kills/sortie to get a system congratulatory message though.  I understand that Htc wants newbs to feel excited when they land kills by seeing their name in lights but 3 kills is only one more kill and would probably eliminate a nice chunk of landed messages.

yes troll.  I pointed out that it is a cesspool, which it is.  I guess in your book, any suggestion to make the game better is a whine.  That's pretty idiotic.

sorry you took the 'JUST FLY' as a troll, it wasn't. I do agree that theres a lot of crap in the DA. I see it every night. but I see it everywhere except FSO. everybody has there ideas of what will make the game better. I haven't seen the constant complaining do anything though. I hate getting ganged Ho'd and pick just like anyone. I hate it them MA as well as the DA. but I know its going to happen anyway, I just try and avoid being the victim. I'm not as good a pilot as you, but I'm trying. I work at it. guess that's my whine. won't help either

A whine is generally a reckless unthoughtful ignorant complaint about a certain part of the game with no actual suggestion how to improve it.  As for disabling Name in the lights messages, see above link, a lot of people support this.

The DA is different from the MA.  Each arena has a different function.  Just because you see the same stuff in the DA as you do in the MA doesn't make it right, in fact it makes it even more wrong.  The DA is supposed to be a sanctuary where you can get away from the MA and find some good clean fights in a controlled environment.  MA and DA are not intended to serve the same purpose which they currently are right now.

I agree with you on the 1v1 fields. I see them as private, controlled fields with rules agreed upon by those there. and if yor not invited to that fight, stay out. seems simple enough. no excuse for invading that. however the furball lake is a different animal, probably a different cesspool. I see that how its labeld, a big hairy furball, less rules and no point. but its fun. you know what your getting into when you up there. the name in lights deal, I don't care either way. I like seeing who is landing kills, and ill givem a wtg if I know they aren't  a griefer. the new guys like getting a cookie, I don't see the need in taking them away. griefers are there to take it out on.
