Title: RAM Heatsinks
Post by: trax1 on March 11, 2009, 06:32:35 AM
I was thinking about getting RAM heatsinks, does anyone know if there even worth getting, the ones I'm looking at are only $6, but I's still like to know if it's even worth getting?

I might even just get them to make the RAM modules look nice because my case has a window.

Nothing harmless with them.   They dissipate heat, which is the name of the game.

if you plan on overclocking it will help the heat cause your gonna change the timings on the chips

If the ram could use an upgrade, I just put some of these into a build and they look real nice.  The blue case fan reflects off of them causing a nice glow.

I seriously doubt you'll see any type of performance gain.  As to overclocking RAM it's hardly worthwhile... better off just starting with faster RAM.  If your CPU bus is 1333 you really don't need anything faster than 667 RAM to keep the clock cycles in sync.  If you plan on overclocking your CPU to a 1600 bus/400 clock you will still only require 800 RAM.

Nothing harmless = all harmful. Watch the double negatives!

You will not see a huge performance gain unless you are overclocking your memory, then you may see a 10 to 80 MHz increase in ability to OC higher then you were able to before the heatsink.  Good heat sinks for memory is almost as expensive as getting some fast DDR2 with them installed already (OCZ Reaper has some massive cooling).  DDR3 has heatsinks installed since most runs native at 1.9 volts or higher. Most good memory anymore has some sort of thermal dissipation built on.  It is actually attached with thermal tape stuck to the modules.  It can be removed with a razor and a little pressure to separate it from the module itself.

I would not invest in this, waste of monies in comparison to the gains IMHO.

I think he was getting them simply because of esthetic reasons, he has a windowed chassis.

Correct.

Yeah, the main reason I'm looking at getting them is for the aesthetics because the case is windowed, but I also was just wondering about the heatsink abilities of them being as they only cost $6.
