Title: The M8
Post by: dirtdart on March 11, 2009, 12:59:01 PM
I searched the posts looking for old threads on the M8.  Did not see any that could answer these question (via mobile phone).

Is AP or HE better to kill the M8.  I hit one three times at 400m (driver / turret / engine compartment) with 85MM AP and it still was fully functional?

Is it likely the 37MM can single shot turret a T34?

Are the tires bullet proof / put over 600 rounds of 7. whatever the T34 hull MG is into the tires, no punture?

This reads like a gripe, is not, have also noticed M3s are pretty tough for having no armor to speak of.  If anyone has tips for fighting the M8 please sound off, I am almost of the opinion it should be perked like the tiger (just kidding).

Last time I was in an M8, I could not turret a Wirble with several point blank AP/HE hits... I just don't see how it could turret a T34 with one shot unless some other guy with a tank caliber round has already done severe damage to it.

Aim for the engine. Problem solved.  It's in the back of a m8 and the front of a m3.  Also generally speaking AP are for Heavy armor and HE for light armor.

I want film.  I love the M8, have killed a lot of flaks and panzers with it and have yet to have it take more than 1 round to turret a flak.  As far as 1 shot turreting a T34, never been that lucky, but maybe I haven't found the sweet spot yet.

Best I've done is single shot turret on a panzer from dead six on the turret and killed it after 3rd shot. I was about 50-100 ft behind him when I fired.

I usually do not even try and turret a pnzr unless I get in a bad spot where it's get his turret or die.  In that case I wait till it swings around on me and try and hit it directly from the front before he gets his shot off.  I haven't had much luck turreting from the side.  Usually I like to hide and wait for them to pass, or flank around the side and just haul bellybutton till I get right behind them.  Inside 200 it's 3 shots at the most to the rear and they are dead, and with the ROF of the M8 there's no possible way for them to swing the turret around.

As TEC said, it is a blast to make slashing attacks against tanks in the M8. Come in, fire 2-3 shells and get out of dodge if you find that you haven't turreted them.

If you're looking to turret a flak you need to aim near the top of the gun position with HE. Otherwise, it can be dicey with the AP through the turret.

This method is even more fun with jeeps, I was able to turret a flak with a high speed 'drive by' with the 50cal.

yeah... my T34 came right out of the vh.  Not damaged.  I appreciate the comments, I will certainly try HE on them.  So the US 37mm is that deadly... is it the same one in the P39 and more powerful than the russian 37MM?  Thanks.

I knew something was up....real conspiracy theory crap here.  Go to the offline practice, hop in a M8 and drive to the T34-76.  The burn over 40, 35mm AP rounds into it from different angles without getting it to smoke, what the heck.  Do you guys think the weapon strength is tied to eny?  I know the fuel burn shifts around (at least I think it does).  Try it and be amazed..... something very fishy going on.  Thought it was very odd that a no so well reputed (at least through my limited knowledge 37mm weapon) turrets MBTs with a couple of rounds.

Quick search shows the 37mm on the P39 is an M4 while the 37mm on the Greyhound is an M6 -- the M6 having roughly 30% greater muzzle velocity than the M4.

The M6 is listed as having armor penetration at 500m of about 2 inches.  Up close, it is deadly enough.

You are shooting m8 in the wrong place. all vehicles can be killed with one shot if shot in the right place.  Im going to guess here but the top of the turret on the wirble the shell goes right thru it just does not graphicly look that way. same with the m3 it looks like a hit but  in that spot the shell goes right thru so no real damage.

The trouble with some of the thinner skinned vehicles and that premise needs to take ito account the wo or three guys in the turret who would be seriously wounded if a 85 mm AP round went soaring through.  A single 85 mm AP round anywhere in the crew compartment would kill or wound the majority of the crew.  Spall and high pressure can tear the body up. It is gamey, and I got that, but sorta excessively gamey if you ask me.
