Title: Daft Punk
Post by: Serenity on March 13, 2009, 01:43:58 AM
Pretty good music, though some of their songs just don't have the sound to vindicate the repetitive lyrics. THIS however, looks like a damned fun concert!

A few of my friends went to that show and I skipped it.  Still kicking myself.  If I had the opportunity to see Justice and Daft Punk together I'd sell my soul to get there.

This thread makes me sad, I don't think I've been to any big shows since Gabriel and Dresden and that was over a year ago :(

Wow, looks like a great concert.  It's a same some of the younger folks have only heard their music through that Kanye West song.  But don't get me started on him.

I went to go see em at the WaMu theater in Seattle last tour.  I had a hard time calling it a concert since there is no band and no one plays
an instrument really (not counting the opening band Rapture).  I would call it one hell of a PA system though.  Every molecule of my being was thoroughly drenched in bass frequency.

Great time! giant assed rave! great music!!!~

They just loop the catchy parts from some funky sounding songs.

Their build up on robot rock live is pretty sweet. Especially with the light setup.

Not to hijack, (but I will anyways) hearing Daft Punk again in a long time reminded me of Paul Oakenfold.  I used to like his stuff too.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2mrchB44fQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2mrchB44fQ)
I really got into this music back in the mid to late ninety's when a lot of video games and anime were featuring this type of music.  "Armored Core" and "Ghost in the shell" the video games for PlayStation were some of the better ones. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ8ZAxXVgYg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ8ZAxXVgYg)   Aaaahhh,  youth.  Thankfully my terrible dance skills saved me from becoming a club kid.

My buddy scored two tickets to Oakenfold here in Pontiac at Clutch Cargos, last Feb.   But Oakenfold got sick in NY a couple days prior and cancelled.   But hearing Benassi and others at loud levels, while watching chicks was fun.

Oakenfold and Benassi are excellent.

Yea the robot rock is super dope. I found another video from a higher angle that shows the complexity of the light show. IMO the lights and ambiance of the concert is almost as important as the music (Especially if you're in Amsterdam...if you know what i mean). At around the 5 min mark, it starts to get a little trippy.

I wonder how much is spent on their light show?

With the prices of high power pro grade intelligent lighting I wouldn't be surprised if that rig is $1.5M+.  Supposedly Tiesto had $1M in lights with him on the ISOS5 tour.  This is a mixture of Tiesto's gear and the production company that threw the party.

When you figure in the huge projection screen and the crazy towers this is probably in the $350-500k range, and I don't think it's even close to the gear that Daft Punk has.

It's great to go to some huge outdoor spectacle with enough people to populate a small city and lights that can be seen from the moon once in a while.  More often than not though I'd rather be in a smaller, darker, dirtier venue with a couple screens, couple lasers, and a strobe and fogger, and actually be able to see the DJ and shake his hand afterward if I want to than deal with an enormous crowd.

Well Filth the only answer I can give is that I'm don't really consider going to see a DJ the same as going to see a band.  I can have a great or bad time at both.  They both involve music.

Good DJs aren't really just putting a CD in and hitting play though.

Daft Punk live is really close to just hitting play on a CD though I will say.  I can say the same of the band Tool though.  If you want to experience a Tool concert just turn your stereo to max, turn off all the lights except for maybe some lazers or wierd backlighting and enjoy.  They sound fantastic but it's not like they are jamming or improving.

Now a good jam band, thats where I'm in the zone for live music.  Something completely different even when the playlists could have been the same or close to it between two shows.

With Daft Punk, it's the atmosphere. The loud music is great, but the lights... oh the lights...

Actually pretty lame.  But way to go bringing metal garbage into a DJ discussion...

Here's one for a good laugh.  A friend of mine was playing it on his late night radio show last year on recommendation from another friend.  He didn't notice what the words were until about 3/4 of the way through the song and cut it off really quick.  My friends and I were hanging out and realized what was happening and had a good laugh about it.

OMG Ace, I would ROR if I heard Dr. Pressure on the radio!
After getting stuck on dialup for a while and having a hard drive bursting at the seams I hadn't been able to search for new tracks for a bit.  But I'm back at it now :)  Some of my current favorites..

Ladytron - Ghosts (Toxic Avengers Remix) Click the "Stream" tab.

Lilly Allen - The Fear (Stonebridge Remix)  What a sexy voice, and the lyrics... wow, spot on for a lot of the club skanks out there.

Josh the Funky 1 - Universal Sound (Ian Carey Remix)  Not a new track, one of my friends has this on vinyl and I've heard it at parties a million times, but never knew the name of the track, but now I have it. (just click play on the little media player in the upper right corner)

And a couple more favs.

Disco Punks - The Dealer (Chardy Remix)

Global Deejays - The Sound of San Francisco

Morgan Page - The Longest Road (Deadmau5 Remix)

OK, gotta cut myself off, I could keep going all day.  All I know is the snow is gone, it's finally getting warm out, and I can't wait to go to one of my friends farms or cabins and party my face off under the stars for like 4 days straight.  Techno Cabin Fever is killing me.

The lols were aplenty and we really laid into him about how the FCC was going to fine him thousands.  Of course no FCC is going to listen to his skims to check, the show after his is underground hiphop and they hardly ever play censored versions.
