Title: Tank Gunnery Practice Terrain
Post by: USRanger on March 14, 2009, 07:37:38 PM
I made this today for a player who requested a tank gunnery range.  I'd thought I'd put it up for anyone wanting ranging practice.  Desert environment in honor of the Tunisia Scenario coming up.  Simply download & unzip, then place the TankRang.res file in your AHIITERR folder, then load it offline.  Spawn a GV North out of A1 and you are on the range.  The target GVs do not fire back or move.  They must be hit multiple times to blow up, as this is a target range, not a battle. Do Not try to take off in an aircraft, as there are no aircraft spawns and it might crash your game. Enjoy. :salute

Very excellent.  Nice work.  Haven't been able to kill anything, because it takes way too many rounds.

Maybe someday, in some later version [ >>hint<<  :D ] it would be cool if the target would blowup with a solid hit (then reappear about 10 seconds later), and maybe smoke with a glancing or low impact hit.  Don't know if you actually have access to the actual hit tables, but that would be additional frosting on the cake.

Either way, this is very well done.   :salute

All of that can be done now on your offline clipboard arena settings.  You can massively increase your ammo count, you can make the targets weaker (They are classified as gun batteries, ObjectsHardnessMults[BAT] in your arena settings), and you can adjust object downtime/reappear time.  It's all in your clipboard map, just tinker with em.  Anything can be back to default if you change something that you don't like.

Here's one.  Take off SW from A1.  The CV group is set to do very defensive maneuvering.

If you really want to help players get better at ranging, give them a terrain with various vehicles at specific distances, in facing and side aspects, so that players can learn what range a target is at just by comparing the silhouette size against the tank sight hash marks.

Flatiron & Belial, the terrain is called TankRang, not Tunisia.  Make sure you load the right one.

Could someone with Vista help him out please?

I got Vista, what I did was download winrar.com which gives you like 30 days free trial. I just could not get the vista unzipper to work.

Yet again i have downloaded winrar lol....its coming up as an error when i try to extract...

Mine is working. I am fiddling with the arena settings to get the correct hits per kill. Not having much luck. I get a big explosion then the tank is still there.  Either, the tank is blowing up and respawning fast, or  it is not blowing up at all. I havent got that spark fromm a hit..  Where is the (repsawn time) settings in the arena settings?  Ps.. What is the correct setting for object hardness? In this case field guns.. Tuk151 :aok

You know BearKats, he gave this to everyone in the general forum, Allied and Axis alike.  Do you think he's a peacenik?  Conscientious Objecter? A traitor to Der Fuerher?  Maybe you should have the Gestapo visit him for a little talk.    :rofl

I finally got it to work, what i had to do was create a new folder, for some reason AH folders do not agree with vista....but like someone else said the tanks just make a big boom when you hit them lol still cool though.

To use the terrain, unzip it, and put the resulting .res file (such as "brooke1.res" or whatever) into your "C:\Program Files\HTC\Aces High II\ahiiterr" folder. Then, start up Aces High, click on "Choose Terrain", pick whatever the name of the .res file was (such as "brooke1"), then choose "Offline Practice".

To unzip in Windows, all you have to do is double click on the .zip folder to open it.  Then you can drag the file inside to whatever other location you choose, just like using any folder.  You don't need to install WinRAR or any other tool for zip files.

If you really want to help players get better at ranging, give them a terrain with various vehicles at specific distances, in facing and side aspects, so that players can learn what range a target is at just by comparing the silhouette size against the tank sight hash marks.

The terrain has different vehicles at different facing and aspects: the only thing that's missing is a specific distance, but, honestly, I think you don't really need it, what you have to do is just to learn how a given apparent size of the target relates to the tank sight marks.

Yep, but that'd be as fool-proof as you could make it, which is usually the best way to design anything freely distributed to general public :)

You can do it the caveman way if you know the length of one tile. Divide it using a ruler stuck on your screen and go from there..  Get in top-down view mode to eliminate perspective distortion as much as possible.
Title: Re: Tank Gunnery Practice Terrain
Post by: USRanger on March 15, 2009, 08:16:54 PM
Terrain tiles are 1 mile square, which is the only distance "marker" in the T.E.  So, setting up targets at 500, 1000, etc. meters is about impossible to get correct.  So unless someone can give us a 500 meter stick to use, it's a moot point. (Dang, I even made that one up all by myself). :D

On a serious note though, I really would have no idea how getting the exact distance could be achieved while in the T.E.. It just wasn't designed to deal with such things.  Just enjoy it for what it is or don't use it.  No thang.  Like I said, it was made for one player to use.  I just got a hair up my butt and decided to post it.

I see, there's no way to put objects anywhere else but at 1 mile intervals. That's too bad.
Title: Re: Tank Gunnery Practice Terrain
Post by: USRanger on March 16, 2009, 05:27:56 AM
Oh sure ya can.  It's getting the exact measurements in meters that's the stumper.
Title: Re: Tank Gunnery Practice Terrain
Post by: moot on March 16, 2009, 07:36:00 AM
I don't understand.  Don't you place objects with the mouse?  If you do, you can figure out distances from the length of tiles. One tile = 1mile = 1,760 yards.  So half a tile is 880 yards. Half of that distance is 440yards. 1/2 tile + 1/4 tile distance= 1320y. 3.2K is approximately 1 tile + 1 half tile + 1/4 tile.  etc.
If you put a ruler or hang a piece of transparent plastic over your screen while in top-down view mode in the TE, and mark where those fraction distances are, you can then figure out where any specific range (to +- a certain error margin) is on a tile, write down on scrap paper what range an exact part of any tile corresponds to and then go into whatever other view mode you need to go (assuming you can't do everything while still in top-down, I think you can) and place the objects right on target :)

I'm pretty sure the ranges in the tank sights are in hundreds of yards.  32 = 3.2K = 3,200yards.

Adjusting the hardness for [BAT] seemed to affect only the two strange box trucks.  I upped my lethality against armor from 1.0 to 10.0 and still no change.  If I hit jeep, 251, M4, T-34, Tiger, I see an explosion but no permanent destruction.  Doesn't matter where I hit it either.  Same explosion, no ricochet rounds.
Haven't yet got through every single hardness setting.  I wish there was a key for the different abbreviations.

Is it possible to make all those ground targets into drones? That way, people can turn the icons off if they want to learn the range and can even check their answers (so to speak) by turning icons on.

Sadly, only HTC has the drones.  No access to em.  That sure would help. :pray

I love the way it's set up. Using the north spawn has tanks and vehicles of all types like you would see them in the game. On the top of hills, in front of the silo...loved that one!.... side on, front on, angled, hiding behind trees, its great. Once I got my range figured out using the size differences of the vehicle clued me in on what the range of the next target was, much like it is in the game....train as you mean to play.

Great Job USRanger  :aok
