Title: in the movie 633 squadron
Post by: TheZohan on March 17, 2009, 10:36:06 AM
The German "fighters" were actually 4-seat Messerschmitt 108 "Taifuns," painted to look like Me-109 fighters

Knew that when I was eight (the year the movie came out), but thanks. Might as well mention The Great Escape, Von Ryan's Express, The Longest Day, ad infinitum.... But they could have been Nord Pingouin's or 1000's (another big snooze of an airplane). Great airplane, in the right hands it could outrun a Tiger Moth.  :rock

Yeah, I believe he's wearing it when he kills the guy from West Side Story

You know, the only Mossie I've ever seen up close was @ RAF Duxford back in '87. Care to guess what color it was painted? Silver

Can you appreciate the irony in that?  :lol

Thought I would throw it in because it is useless information just like this post.

Some truly corny lines in that film: "You can't kill a squadron."

I have a follow-up useless question... if you were a Hindu pilot, wouldn't your turban rub on the canopy?

You're thinking Sikh, not Hindu.  Hindus don't have a dress code.

Buddy Ebsen was in neither 663 Squadron nor Crocodile Dundee.  In this picture he looks alot like John Meillon.  I think it's the hat.

I watched Attack!! yesterday and Buddy was in it with Jack Palance and Eddie Albert.  He wouldn't drink with someone he didn't respect.

John Meillon was also in the longest day with Eddie Albert.
This is becoming like six degrees of Kevin Bacon?

That the one where Palance got run over by a tank? Why weren't there any tanks in City Slickers?
(Daniel Sterns B*TCHY wife excluded, of course)

In The Longest Day, the Messerschmitts used to portray Luftwaffe fighters were not Bf-109s, but were actually Bf-108 Taifuns, a four-seat cabin monoplane design with a wider fuselage.

I was in The Longest Day.. no wait that was Richard Burton. But I have been naked on an airplane before... no wait that was Hugh Hefner. OK, never mind. What kind of airplanes were those again?

Where'd you get the coconuts?

They migrated from Africa.

Title: Re: in the movie 633 squadron

Are you sure they weren't european?
No, although the swallows were European, the coconuts were actually African, hence dispelling the oft-repeated misconception about the swallows "tranporting" the coconuts to Europe. In actuality, both the swallows AND the coconuts were flown across the Mediterannean in 4-seat Messerschmitt 108 "Taifuns," painted to look like Me-109 fighters, just as was done in the movie "633 Squadron".
