Title: my Sons foray into pike lure building
Post by: rod367th on March 18, 2009, 12:35:13 PM
My 11 yearold son who has flown with some of you. has decided he wants to build fishing lures. he has built 30 so far. And wants me to post phot's and ask you which ones are your favorites. We will use these lures as soon as lakes clear of Ice so we can put out boat in. My fav is red white one top of board.
I purchased a lure building kit from cabella's and fab some spinner blades myself for him.I think he did great and will post films of fish caught with these lures.

Take it from someone that was very surprised to catch a Pike when I was fishing for Bass, make sure you do a pull test from the hook to the eyelet of at least 20 pounds hanging from it.

I know nothing about lure building, but those are FINE look lures there my friend.  I'd be happy to take one off your hands.

I use a red/white spoon with a triple hook...nothing fancy.  Green/white also.  Calm smaller lakes and you pickup the smaller of the pike family around here (PA).   Unfortunately alot of the fish are SPOOKED to death by summer so , with all the stupid rules and 99% of the license money going only to feed the mouths of the game workers, I have a real problem with the sport of fishing in my state but still enjoy it from time to time.  I let me license expire last yet, but am going back out at least 10-15 times this year.  I hope to take my Nephew who I HOPE is old enough to enjoy this, just have to find a good blue gill hole for him to enjoy those.  Great fighters and easy to catch with a tiny piece of...anything! :)

Anyway back to your topic - NICE again...I like the ones that replicate a rainbow trout.  Musky and Pike like them too :)

Very nice looking work there.

I too would stress test a few to destruction, to make sure they can handle the load.

As for colors, I like silver for clear water, red/white for somewhat stained, and the flourescent colors in quite murky water.

Rod,now you have to get him into building wooden plugs, balsa and cedar are both good woods to use.Be sure to supervise him though,it's easy to cut yourself baddly....

BTW,be sure to split the plugs and wire the hooks in place, check into it you"ll know why soom enough.

Great work!! I try flys when I have the time...

Actually you can build through wire baits by drilling, no need to slice em in half and glue em back together.

COPY XBRIT DAVID IS MY ONLY SON. My 4 daughters have given me 4 grandboys tho.  David still talks about day u let him kill u.

What started this is,he went to end of school outing to bay city mi DNR. and his class built lures. We went fishing up north he throws in the lure he made, and catches 30" pike. this after i told him he wouldn't catch anything on it was to ugly. see photo below u can see his DNR lure on board now too.  that is what got him begging for a lure kit. have to say 5 or 6 of his i really like and would buy in store.

Sounds fun, I wanted to do the same when I was in grade school... I even wrote a paper on the northern pike in I think 6th grade :aok

still my favorite fish to fish for. I always thought they were underrated by the public to the muskie... they are cooler, meaner, and overall the baddest fresh water fish :aok
